someone posted a year or two ago about gold inlay. so i just had to try it out. i ended up doing 2 of my revolvers. go to michaels arts and crafts or something similiar pick up a tube of the gold inlay. its an oil base type paint. so
Clean your revolver good final clean up should be with some rubbing alcohal. then use a papertowel folded up. Put on the gold inlay and rub it in allaround the revolver. then wait about 10 minutes then used an old towel and rubed it off. used some lighter fluid to clean up any imperfections all in all it took about half hour. was very easy to do
 
Gave the .450 lee mold projectiles a go. from what i found using 30gr FFF, that using the 18gr spout of filler was about right enough for the projectile to seat low enough. i went to the 24gr spout (what i normally use for the round balls) and i had to compress the crap out of it which looks like increased the velocity a bit since the holes were neat like a wadcutter. which is what i usually get with higher charges with the roundball.

they also seemed to go a slight bit better without overgrease.
 
my new Walker mold, I bought this off gunbroker, it has a single pic in the listing, I have less than $24 shipped in it so I am not dissapointed but the sprue cutter handle seems to be a bit off in shape and the mold is less than stellar. It is not a true picket bullet style but I hope it will make an accurate projectile. It is marked "EUROMANUFACTURE made in Italy"

Those bag molds are good to display but they get hot in a hurry. If it doesn't cast what you want, there are a lot of companies making better quality molds for you to choose from.
 
I have had little luck finding anything in a conical other than the ROA mold by Lee. It is a .456, I really would like a .458 due to some really large bores in one of my Walker cylinders. I have bought about 220 ROA conicals and should have them here in a week or so. They are the 220 grain version.
 
I did buy the walker mold more for a presentation box more than anything. I am looking at Walker flasks and nipple wrenches now. I do not have a case as yet but may make one myself or convert another pre made box.
 
The replacement nipples I obtained following a discussion earlier in this thread got tested yesterday and turned out to be excellent, with not a single misfire in 48 shots.

One thing I'd like to do is completely dismantle my Walker for a good cleaning of the mechanism. However, I'm not sure of what to do after getting the grip and trigger guard off. Does anyone know of some good photos of disassembly relating to the Walker (presumbly the Dragoon would be much the same), similar to this?

That schematic, along with disassembly instructions prepared by forum member mec, should be what you need. You can find the instructions in the sticky thread at the top of this forum entitled, "Black Powder Essentials"; click on the link, "How to dissassemble a Colt type revolver - started by MEC".

By the way, that Black Powder Essentials thread contains many very worthwhile articles.
 
Thanks, chaps - I'll investigate those resources. It will be nice to clean out what looks like up to 40 years' worth of grime!
 
I recently fired and totally disassembled my new to me, Walker and they are relatively simple, as long as you put it back the way you took it apart. I do it in stages and orient the screws to the way I'm holding the gun, as some are shorter and must go in a specific side.
 
good to know, i have pretty much got worked out how to completely disassemble and more or less reassemble my 1860 decently, so if i ever have the gumption to take a go with the 1847 then i guess i will have at least some knowhow on what to do! :p

The devil is in the details. That mainspring can be a real bear on assembly. Some advice: with the grips off, pull the hammer back to full cock and use a wire tie to hold the spring down in that position - even more if possible. Then use the trigger to release the hammer and proceed with disassembly. Having that spring compressed will make assembly much easier.
 
I must be lucky, that or I have a weak spring. I have no difficulty compressing the spring with my thumb and sliding it up under the hammer. After the first six shots I disassembled my Walker and did some action clean up. I was not happy with the trigger so after the second six shots I did it all over again. I am still a but unhappy with the trigger so i will most likely take it down again and reduce the shelf on the hammer a bit. The action is very smooth and it is as slick or better than my SAA.
 
Remember what you just said. two parts you should have in stock for a Walker an extra main spring and the bottom loading lever catch. i have gone through 2 loading lever latches and 1 main spring.

Can I join the club...just got this in the mail,an ASM Walker made in 1976 still unfired except for proofing... has really nice factory engraving all over it.
I am really hoping that this isn't a lemon as a lot of the ASM's were..maybe I got lucky.
Can't wait to hit the range with this BIG gun....:D
The picture shows the size compared to a Colt 1849 Pocket with a 5 inch barrel.

Hello,
Over the weekend I acquired my first Walker in trade for a few coins and nazi medal at the gun show. It is a ASM XXVI 1968 vintage and looks pretty nice. However, the action seemed a little sluggish and the cylinder does not always lock in at full cock, spining L & R. After inspecting the gun further and taking the handle, mainspring and hammer out I noticed a piece that looked a little loose and reacting limply with cocking. Seems the "hand" has a broken "spring". I have learned a lot here in the past few days and would appreciate any advice on the repair. I think I can get an replacement hand & spring from vti.
I have read that the early ASM Walkers were pretty nice, would this one qualify? We'll see after the repair.

Simply replace the hand and spring assembly with a new one from VTI. You may have to trim the length of the hand itself with a file, however.
