This will probably not help you and you'vd probably already thought of it anyway...Why don't you draw out a pattern and cut your own stocks?
I'vd had 3 18 inch barrels made and believe me, each one of them cost a lot of money. Of course they're Match Competition..hell, they're above Match Competition. Each one of them is a perfect barrel.
I sort of like your idea (plan) though about the shoulder stock. Shoulder stock on a Walker might be cool. Not for me but maybe for some people. I don't know about the longer barrel though. That 9 inch barrel that's on it will carry on out there pretty good for a heavy assed .457 ball. I sometimes call mine 'pocket rifle'. What I mean about the barrel is that if you are really going to get good barrels and you plan on selling these units you will have to charge each customer a hell of a lot of money just to break even. A perfect barrel is fine for your personal piece if you feel like spending the money. If you're just planning on putting some cheap trash barrel on there so you can use that as a selling point, well, I don't think it will take very long for people to decide they'll just stick with Mr. Uberti, Mr. Walker and Mr. Colt and the time tested, time proven, tried and true original design. What sort of steels are you thinking about getting these barrels made out of? What sort of testing will they be subjected to? There's a least 50,000,000 questions here just about the barrel alone. Well, anyway, not trying to tell you how or what to do. Just sitting here bored and decided to kick it around a little bit....

sltm1 - Excellent! I like a positive approach!

No probs - welcome aboard and we can enjoy the ride to hell together LOL!

I will PM you in the next 24 hours. I am awaiting a response from Dixie Gun Works with a bit of advice from them - but if you can modify an 1860 Army stock then we have it made! Well - that bit of it anyway.

I am still interested in any 3rd Model replica Dragoon stocks available as that will speed the process initially.

But if modified stocks can be made Stateside then the LRE has a future if we can first get the prototypes working. The market in Oz will be very limited but my main interest is just to make it happen and have one (or two!).

GOTC. Thank you also for the valued input.

A couple of comments though if I may.

I repeat that I am not interested in making money or breaking even. I am taken with the concept and want to make one (although it looks like it will be two now).

Equally I am more than happy to hand over information to help others do it.

I cannot make my own stocks – I build aircraft not guns! I am just not tooled for that sort of stuff! So the advice from these forums and valid contacts will be invaluable to make the project work.

Let’s see how we go eh? I can write well enough to keep interest up.

SEND ME AN 18 Inch BARREL NOW

hehehehehehe

big bad guns going to have a heck of a time making a holster for that

Scrat, stay out of this. You don't know your ass from a hole in the ground anyway! (!!!!)
AussieTH, good luck. I'll be watching and reading. I want to know how this come's out and I want to see a photo of it when you get it off the ground if you don't mind....

I just want to take this to the range with me and see the look on everyones faces. hahahahah

WalkerLongRangeExpress1.jpg

think BBG can make a holster for this

MY MY!!!
Hey Scrat, you know that Old Fuff and Noble Sniper are going to be highly insulted when they see that you failed to whiten the cylinder don't you?....(!!!!)

LOL They have to use thier imagination. Dont show this to the miliatary they might want to start mounting them onto Tanks M1 Abraham with an 1847 Walker mounted on top. Now that i have to see.

Gent...

I warned you that this place had gone hog wild!! :what:

It's all because of a lack of adult supervision. I did my best to civilize this place, but I was overwhelmed.

I just know that when the Department of Homeland Insecurity finds out about what’s been going on this thread will be raided. We’ll all end up in the slammer. :neener:

For years Dixie Gun Works has been offering a Pietta-made ’51 Navy with a 12” barrel with a detachable shoulder stock, so the concept isn’t new. Somewhere there must still be some 3rd model Dragoon shoulder stocks floating around. I know because I’ve seen them. Where there’s a will there’s a way. ;)

Actually I noted the blued cylinder and myself am questioning whether or not the bipod should be blued or color case hardened :D

If you can get someone to color case harden the bipod let me know...

You could have it silver plated - Colt did that on backstraps and trigger guards of commercial revolvers.... :what:

Old Fuff I'vd been gone pretty well for some time. I thought you could handle this! "Oh yeah, GOTC! Just move on up there. Man I'vd got this under control. Yessirree, Bob! No problem here!" I get back on here and find this place gone to hell! People cutting off sections of aluminum conduit pipe and mounting them on '47's and calling it a barrel; people in flagrant disrespect and violation of all rules handed down by the ethics committee just absolutely refusing to remove that ugly, horrible looking 'bluing' from their '47 cylinders and it just goes on and on. What happened to Scrat?! He's supposed to be the owner of this outfit!
I tell you Old Fuff. You need to get busy. I can see right now that it will take a miracle. Something on the order of a German Shepherd laying an egg.
I place the blame squarely on your shoulders. Now don't go blaming Scrat. God know's that poor little Scrat has done the best he could with the dregs of humanity that he had to work with!!....
Yeah, I heard about the report she put out. Been listening all about it for the last couple of days on my XM radio. Talk with you later Old Fuff. I'll be sitting here reading the posts for today..

Don't blame (sniff) the Old Fuff. He slipped his chain and has been off looking at pictures of gold/engraved Walkers on the ArmsBid auction site. (SOB!) such prices... (Wimper...)

Scrat, I was fixing to go out and try to get me a couple of more rabbits but last Thursday night the weather blew in again. There's still a lot of snow left (it's melting) and it's still pretty chilly so I'm not going out. I do like fried rabbit though....

Old Fuff, good evning. I was getting worried about you a little. 'Fraid you had a stroke or something. I was wondering about Scrat to. I sure wouldn't want anything bad to happen to either of you.
Yeah!!, and I bet every one of those damn '47's had blued cylinders!
I just looked out the window. Four big rabbits thumping around not 15 feet from where I'm sitting right now. I'm not going to bother them though. I'd have to stay outside with them to clean them and all and it's cold out there....

I looked at a couple of photo's of Walker's with whitened cylinders yesterday. The pictures disturbed me. They looked sort of,..well..sort of perverted. It gave me a stomach ache. I'vd seen lot's of pictures of original Walkers and they were all blued. Some of the bluing was wearing off of course, but they were still blued....

Nope... It is an ugly fact that all of the Walkers had polished but unblued cylinders. So did the first run of 1st. Model Dragoons.

In those days bluing smaller parts and pistols was done using heat, and I suspect that Colt and Whitney might have been afraid that the heat was high enough to anneal the steel. For the same reason many musket barrels were left "in the white." Earlier some Paterson cylinders were blued, but they didn't carry the kind of powder charges that the Walker did.

There is no reason, with today's steel, that you can't have a blued cylinder, but those that are don't represent the "real thing" as it originally was. There is also no reason you can't fit up one of your cap & ball revolvers with the black stocks you mentioned before. It's quite easy because you can sand then down to a perfect match with the brass trigger guard and backstrap because the brass isn't plated or blued - so you have no finish to worry about.

Them tha'r rabbits lead a dangerous life... :D
