I don't plan on a complete strip every time to the range, but it was new and I figured a teardown was in order on it since I don't know how clean it was upon delivery.

Admiral sorry to hear about your Main spring I broke one on mine pretty early on but I believe it was due to spent caps lodging in the hammer groove. Haven't had that trouble since and I dissasemble mine completely every time I fire it. The biggest trouble I have is getting the hand seated again I have a hard time compressing that tension spring enough to allow the hand to slide back inside the groove, but it's just slightlly annoying. I did buy an extra mainspring however when I ordered the replacement for the one I broke.

Clermont Thanks for that information just what this thread is all about, I believe. Any idea what a walker comparable to yours is worth these days?

I have no idea what my Colt Signature Series Walker is worth today. What I can tell you is that I ordered it in 1999, from The Sportsman's Guide catalog, at a discounted price of $399.97 plus shipping. The presentation case and accessories were ordered from Colt Blackpowder Co. at a retail cost of approximately $200.00 each plus shipping. So, my investment totals $800.00.

In an earlier post, you mentioned the pros and cons of the Kirst and R&D conversion cylinders for the Walker. Do you think the Kirst cylinder can be used, like the R&D cylinder, without machining the recoil shield for the loading gate? Would the Kirst cylinder drop in without any alteration to the Walker? I like the idea of the one firing pin the Kirst unit has as opposed to the six firing pins on the R&D unit.

Old WALKER.

Good evening. I was wondering just what one has to do to join this outfit.
I don't know how to send photos, and I am no computer whiz. But I can tell you I own a Navy Arms Whitneyville Walker. It was produced in 1977. The cylinder pawl is broken, so it is temporarily out of service.
I also own a Colt Third Model Dragoon, 1851 Colt Navy, 1861 Colt Navy, a Belgian Colt 1860 Army, some Italian jobs and several good old Colt .45 ACP Governments. I made my living carrying the Government for many years.
If I knew how to do the photo thing, I would. I just hate it when machines are smarter than me...:banghead:

Update on broken base pin

Hello All,

Dick Williams Gun Shop could not fix the cracked arbor pin on my Walker. They had it for a about a month and a half. I ended up taking it to D + D Gun Shop in Troy, Michigan. This gunsmith is awsome. He rebuilds/refurbishes weapons for the Smithsonian Institute. He said it would be no problem to fix. He said it would take about 3 weeks. Ill post another update then.

Clermont.

Nope from what i heard the recoil shield needs to be installed for it to work properly. This i believe requires to drill and tap a hole. if you do install a kirsk go all the way and do the loading gate as well. For this i tell you it would be nice to have another walker.

Walker problems

Yep. ok im on vacation this week and i took my revolvers with me. i believe i know the problem. However i thought it post to make sure.

I put on my r&D cylinder and fired off 6 shots. all went well so i fired 12 more shots. so i had 18 through the gun. Then i give it to my son and he fires 5 and has one ftf. i closely inspected the ftf and realized the primer was barely touched. so i loaded the shell back in ahhh must have not been properly sized as it did not seat all the way. not too sure why. and how it had a light hammer strike. so i loaded up 6 more and it shot good on the first 4, then you could hardly move back the hammer. i pulled the wedge out and cleaned the arbor shaft and the cylinder then it moved ok. So i loaded up 6 more. i fired 2 of them. notice the wedge moved a lot so i reset the wedge then fired another 2 more rounds. the cylinder was almost jammed again. So i went to pull it apart and i could not get the barrel off. i lubed it up and eventually had to pry it off the barel. upon closer inspection it seemed as though the wedge has worn out and moves. When it does the barrel is not tight. This could have caused a burr in the inside of the barrel. I ended up having to clean it up completely. then i put a mic to the arbor shaft and also checked inside the barrel. Both the arbor shaft had a burr at the wedge area and the barrel had a burr in the barrel. so i took a file to the arbor and took a brake cylinder hone to the inside of the barrel Now they align ok and feel good. Before this i could not even get them together or apart. Is this what happens when the wedge goes out. I know i need to order a new wedge. Just wondering what else i should do or not. im wondering if the alignment of the barrel and cylinder will be ok or if i should have it checked out when i get another wedge

wow cant believe this made page two.

well i finally had to replace some parts on my walker. My wedge was pretty much shot up. Next to go was the loading lever clip. So i am also replacing the nipples. I think im going to start sticking to lower volume loads though

Old West Gunsmith

Over the last 30 years David Chicoine at Old West Gunsmith has worked on a lot of my guns. Got a vintage S&W, he is the guy Smith and Wesson will refer you to. He even fabricated and replaced a broken arbor (base) pin on one of my Colt C&Bs. Original rust bluing, modern blue, name it, he's one of the best.

Prices

Reasonable Prices - best to go to the web site and make contact. Some jobs he could ball park, others he would want to see the gun. It would be done 100% correct and he stands behind his work. I have been using him since the 80's and completely trust his work. He has done some high end jobs and minor fitting and finishing work for me over the years. In addition to his gun smithing, he is also one of the foremost authors on antique firearms repair. Navigate his web site.
