The Traditional Tactical

Clips can be bought on their own or taken off existing knives (buy a cheap S&W/Gerber etc). They screw on so all you need is a drill with a small bit.

Hey, Fosbery, I guess you may be right. Have you tried that before? I was thinking that clips usually screwed on with machine screws that would require threads on the scale/liner. But I suppose if a knife's clip screwed into a plastic scale, it could also be screwed into the scale material of a traditional-style knife. (If pre-drilled.) Don't know how that would work with bone, but there are other handle materials out there.

Thanks.

Yeah, I could always shell out for a custom-made knife. I did that a few years ago, for a fixed-blade knife. Can't afford to right now.

The real point of this thread was to find out if such knives were being mass-produced, even if they didn't meet my specs in all particulars. It looks like they kind of, sort of are, but usually at a fairly serious price.

11M,

There are folks that repair older pocket knives that could attach a clip and thumb stud for you. It wouldn't be cheap (maybe $50), but it would certainly be less expensive than having one built custom.

I needed to buy my father-in-law a birthday present, so with this thread in mind I went by Gander Mountain and picked up a Case Mid-folding Hunter in Amber.

It's a liner lock with thumbstud and pocket carry clip (which is on the opposite side of what's pictured above).

The geometry for the one hand-opening action is pretty good. The joint is new and a bit stiff, but it should break in smooth.

The liner lock reminds me of the one on my Victorinox One-Handed Trekker. Not for heavy duty use, but for casual use it should be fine.

Like most Case knives, the edge is pretty sharp right out of the box, and I'll sharpen it up a bit before I give it to him. What's a good angle for a Case?

I'd have to say this one isn't really tactical, but it's sort of halfway between a traditional knife and a tactical. I think it's about the right speed for my father-in-law.

That's what I would have suggested, Les, but he wants a different handle/blade shape.

That's a real pretty knife.
