I'm looking for the meanest hollow point round period.
I've used some cheap silver tip 9mm. Ive used Federal Hydrashock in .380; .45; and 9mm. I've also used Winchester Ranger .40cal 155gr.
I like the Ranger, it has some kick to it.
What is the best brand period?

I'm leaning towards Remington Golden Sabers, or PowR'Ball. Any opinions would be great!
I know the question is vague. I'm going to keep it like that so everyone can get there two cents in.

I think that all the premium HP rounds (ranger, golden sabre, gold dot, hydrashock, etc) are pretty effective these days. Avoid gimmicky or 'boutique" ammo.

My priorities are:
  1. Reliability
  2. Accuracy
  3. Availability
  4. Price
  5. Ballistic test performance.

I just want to thank everyone who has posted or will post. I posetd this on another site and the gun snobs jumped all over it.
Thanks for seeing my question as what it is. Just a question!

Damn, BlackTalons did all that. Damn! You know his girlfriend still loves him though.

Whenever I see an expanded .45acp Federal HST at about 1" in width I cringe a little.

Then I remember that I am on the giving, not the receiving
end of them and then I smile. :D

I need pics of expansion. PLEASE!!!!
I saw picks of Winchester SXT's and i wheeped a little.

I think the Corbon DPX line is the best FACTORY SD load out there. The Barnes XPB bullets are the best available and Corbon loads these real hot. The line is extensive too, I use their 9x23 Win. and 10mm for carry, but they've got almost everything covered. It is pricier than run-of-the-mill ammo but well worth it.

If you hand-load, I would recommend using the Barnes XPB for all your SD loadings.

Zundfolge,

You beat me to it but I couldn't agree more.

That is truly beutiful.
Now all i need is depleted uranium and H.E.I's(high exspolsive incinderary) rounds to top off my shopping list.
Just kinding... not really.

Black Hills

:banghead: I like Black Hills Red Label in my 38s and 357s. I have never had a failure to fire or a failure to feed. They are a little pricey, but what I like best is not seeing a big plume of smoke clouding my front sight.

Why no .357 or 44 Reb Mag?

Is this a case of censureship to protect us from the truth?

Twenty five years ago the .357 was King. The human body is the same except for the bunch that has never learned to shoot wheel guns.

I sorta like the .44 Remington Mag in 185/200 grain JHP. And I have no data.

"The old Speer 45 cal 200gr "flying ashtray" you can stick a No 2 pencil in the hp" yes, to give the target lead poisoning. :D

Looks like the Barnes bullets are a copper version of black talons, just not as "evil."

actually i guess the meanest bullets i've ever seen in keeping with the .357 magnum vien was some 148 gr. hbwc rounds i reloaded using .357 magnum cases and 5 grs of bullseye under the bullets loaded in backwards........  now that was a serious .38 caliber hollow point!!

oh by the way THANKS FOR LETTING ME BACK IN AFTER ALL THIS WHILE!!

"...the best brand period?..." The one that your pistol shoots the most accurately. If you don't reload, you MUST try as many brands and bullet weights to find the one or two that gives you the best accuracy out of your pistol. Nothing else matters.

Not exactly true....the bad guys are always coming up with new additives!:cuss:

Well, I've never seen a hp handgun round that reliably expands in human tissues (as opposed to gelatin). I've chatted (internet) with other LEO's who have seen some expand reliably in real shootings, and I believe them....but I've never seen it with my own eyes after viewing hundreds of bullets taken from real shootings.
I have heard that Winchester Silver tips do, in fact, expand reliably in people. The most notable case involves a LEO who shot a perp 5-6 times center mass with 145gr .357 rounds that expanded so well that the perp lived...and killed the LEO with a .22...
I haven't heard of any significant .40 failures involving bullets 155gr and over. The lighter stuff has had some penetration failures. In my experience, anything in .40 cal, ball or hp, 155gr and over, will get the job done. It is one of the best manstoppers ever.
I tend to aggre with Jesse, who said:

I would substitute "street record" for test performance, as I don't trust gelatin as a test medium.
