The unloved rifle

I guess it would be my Model 70 Black Shadow 300 Win.
It isn't that it's unloved, it never comes out to play much anymore.
Thinking I might put it on the broker or maybe even re barrel it to something other than a magnum.
Great rifle, but since the 338-06 came together, it never leaves the safe

In it's original configuration, the Savage 24V-A I traded for (and wanted badly at the time) was unloved when I discovered it wasn't very accurate, barrels were not even close to being regulated, (shotgun tube hitting like two feet or more below rifle POI) and it started breaking open when firing the rifle barrel. I would have got rid of it pronto, but I shot a Cougar with it, so that gave it too much "status" to let go of it. A bit of sentimental value.

So I put a lot of work into making it loveable. I whacked the .30WCF barrel down to 19.5", and the twenty gauge tube to 18.5". I cleaned the action within an inch of it's life, and removed any oil, grease or grit from the locking lug surfaces. Now I love it as it's reliable, (don't break open no more no more) light, "handy" and very much perfection as far as deep woods wilderness survival goes. And I got my first cougar with it, on the ground, not out of a tree with dogs barking at it.

The barrels will never be regulated, but with a flip-up-down rear sight, I can flip the sight down, hold the front sight way up, bracket it between two screws that hold the little adjustable elevation plate on the sight, and put a 3.5" Brenekke slug just a tad low, but perfect windage at 25 yards, which is where I would open fire on a charging beast that wanted to bite or scratch or eat me. Eventually I will add a second rear sight for the shotgun tube. For some reason, it does not shoot shot loads as low as a slug, so I'm good to go on grouse, bunnies and squirrels. And, actually get a decent pattern at 25 yards with shot loads.

There it is, from wanted badly, to unloved, to loved again. A Happy ending!

Larry in wyoming:

Is original Swedish (etc) wooden 'military' furniture fairly easy to find, and might be affordable?

Being about to leave town, there won't be time (for me) to read any response for several days----

:)maybe somebody Else can benefit from such info.

I’m thinking you’d need something with the same case head diameter, which I’d guess still leaves you with something in magnum territory.

You could make it a 7 Rem Mag or .264. For some reason I’m intrigued by a .264, but I’ve already got a 7, so it would be redundant

.458 Win mag and just load to .45-70 ballistics...unless a cape buffalo needs dispatching!

Yes you make a valid point. I reckon I'd probably be better off selling it and getting another revolver. The 338-06 does just about everything the 300 does with 30% less propellant and a lot less recoil, not to mention its accuracy is outstanding.
Dunno......laid quite a few deer down with it when it was my main hunting rig, hard to say goodbye to an old friend even if we don't hang out so much anymore

My thinking is, would I rather own something I’ll use, or something I won’t use?

I’m astounded by the number of members here that say they own many multiples of a given caliber but complain that they don’t have money for the newest toy. If you were going to the range tomorrow, would you grab that rifle or another one? If you were going hunting tomorrow would you grab that one or another one?

Me? If I have no use for it, I have no use for it. Owning something just to own it somehow made sense to me at one time. Not any more. And honestly, I could buy a dozen rifles today and not miss the money at all. I guess that’s why I’ve got the money and not a safe full of guns I never use.

If we spent as much time using our stuff as we do working to buy it, we’d be better off in the long run. I don’t regret selling the many guns I had nearly as much as the hunting and shooting trips I passed up because I was working

Stuff comes and goes. Cars, houses, jobs, wives. Only thing you keep is your memories

Do Monte carlo stocks kick worse?
My friend had a 270 he picked up with one of those stocks. He complained about how sharp the recoil felt. I gave him a little of the come on man it's a 270 for cryin out loud.
He had me shoot it....thing kicked like a mule.

I’ve got a rifle I bought a few years ago that I just never shoot and don’t have much desire to do anything with. It’s a JP Enterprises complete 18” upper on an RJF receiver. 100% premium parts and a super accurate rifle, but I just don’t care anything about it. Guy I bought it from put it together for 3 gun competition and decided he wanted something lighter. Rifle shows a lot of wear externally, but didn’t see much actual shooting. I guess I should sell it or give it a facelift.
