In it's original configuration, the Savage 24V-A I traded for (and wanted badly at the time) was unloved when I discovered it wasn't very accurate, barrels were not even close to being regulated, (shotgun tube hitting like two feet or more below rifle POI) and it started breaking open when firing the rifle barrel. I would have got rid of it pronto, but I shot a Cougar with it, so that gave it too much "status" to let go of it. A bit of sentimental value.
So I put a lot of work into making it loveable. I whacked the .30WCF barrel down to 19.5", and the twenty gauge tube to 18.5". I cleaned the action within an inch of it's life, and removed any oil, grease or grit from the locking lug surfaces. Now I love it as it's reliable, (don't break open no more no more) light, "handy" and very much perfection as far as deep woods wilderness survival goes. And I got my first cougar with it, on the ground, not out of a tree with dogs barking at it.
The barrels will never be regulated, but with a flip-up-down rear sight, I can flip the sight down, hold the front sight way up, bracket it between two screws that hold the little adjustable elevation plate on the sight, and put a 3.5" Brenekke slug just a tad low, but perfect windage at 25 yards, which is where I would open fire on a charging beast that wanted to bite or scratch or eat me. Eventually I will add a second rear sight for the shotgun tube. For some reason, it does not shoot shot loads as low as a slug, so I'm good to go on grouse, bunnies and squirrels. And, actually get a decent pattern at 25 yards with shot loads.
There it is, from wanted badly, to unloved, to loved again. A Happy ending!
