The Very Best .30 caliber Hunting Cartridge

Back when I used to believe most anything I read in a gun magazine mid 1960's), I selected the .30 mag that was the superior design in most writer's judgement: the .308 Norma magnum. Seen any lately? After trying most every cartridge to come down the pike since then, I am quite sure that the .30-06 is the best of the .30's. Fine for elk, better than anything larger for deer, antelope and black bear. Cheaper and universally available.

I have a bud near Charleston, SC who hunts deer with a 22 rimfire and has killed hundreds with his old beat up ugly Glenfield with a 4X scope. Another in the mts of NC hunts black bear with a 22. Guess no one ever told them that they had to have a cannon to kill them with.
As for shooting deer at long distance-I dropped one two yrs ago at 275 yds and he was running. Bet you are wondering what kind of "pea shooter" I was using--one of my 06weiners of course. Am building a fluted bull barrel on my old '03 reciever and you guessed it--going to be in '06. Am still picking up ammo at less than .50 each. What did you say your "cannon" rounds are costing now??? Where did you say you are getting them??? What variety of bullet weights does your local store carry for your H&H jewel???? How many boxes do they carry??? In a crisis situation where will your ammo come from??? Trolling can get one into jeprody if he wants to be taken seriously. Talking about one's favorite tried, tested, and proven shooters instead of just posting the qualities of your favorite round is not prudent. Besides that, in a battle situation you will get two to four shots off with those "inferior" rounds while you are resighting yours. So go easy on "running down" others calibers. Later on, wc--aka "06" :neener:

this very thing was brought up in a article by Craig boddington, in this month's issue of rifle shooter, or outdoor life, can't remember which.
As a dude who has shot on every continent , and at all game which resides on Earth, for proly at least 40 years, he says, the 300 winmag, is a tad better than the h/h. Just from his experience, I will have to defer to him.

Craig was a Marine and I respect his experience, but if you read his articles enough, you would walk away under the impression that each species, and in some cases sub-species, of animals requires a unique caliber for optimal smiting. I understand that is his job and all, but c'mon....

Think about it - your target or game has no clue as to what the headstamp on your brass says. It is all about a well constructed bullet of suitable caliber, BC, and SD, delivered accurately at sufficient velocity to fulfill it's intended purpose. You guys who are all hungup on what the cartridge headstamp says cannot see the forest for the trees.
