The Very Best .30 caliber Hunting Cartridge

Shawnee,
It's too bad the people can't grasp your wisdom. I think the problem is you are obviously educated beyond your intelligence!:neener:

I guess I might consider the .300 H&H when I find some reasonably priced mil surplus ammo for it & a semi-auto to shoot them from to quench the recoil.

Until then those poor underprivilaged whitetails are just going to have to put up with underpowered incorrectly weighted .308s.

I like to look at the ballistic charts that are published now and then, just to see how many inches of drop a .30-06 has at 300 or 400yds, as compared to the other calibers.

Just shows me that there are about 50 cartridges that do about the same thing, plus or minus a few inches at longer ranges.

Then I just go buy myself another box of .30-06 for $20 at Wal Mart and get on down the road!

My brother in law has a .300 H&H mag. An old Mauser, either a custom or commercial, not sure which. Undeniably a beautiful rifle. He claims no ammo available at all, which likely means, just none easy to find. He's been wanting me to buy the dies and stuff and make him some ammo! I told him just buy a gun you can get ammo for,'cause I ain't investing my cash to make him obsolete ammo!

A good caliber I imagine. Just that the .300 H&H is about obsolete.

300 H&H will be a serious cartridge when John Garand builds a semi-auto rifle that fires it.:)

300 H&H will be a serious cartridge when John Garand builds a semi-auto rifle that fires it.

Pffft.

It will only be serious when I can buy an AR chambered for it.

With a 24 inch bull barrel. I lift weights, therefore I can carry a heavy rifle around with no fatigue, unlike the rest of you girly-men. :p

I want 30 round mags too. Doesn't matter how long they are.

The 30-378 Weatherby called. When the 300 H&H grows some cajones... it can come out and play.

:neener:

My favorite is the 30-30 too, But I believe the most versatile would be the 30-06. It can safely be loaded for game from grouse to moose.

Some folks want to drive a Hummvee to work. Some folks use a Civic. Both vehicles will get my fanny to work. One uses less gas. The other has a broader performance envelope. Which is right?

When a drunk crashes into you when your children are in the car, the Hummvee suddenly reveals its moral superiority.

(I don't think the analogy carries over to overpriced .30 magnum cartridges, though. There are things that need more smashing, but that's why there are .50 BMGs.)

Seems to me the real question is why look at .30 caliber at all? The 7mms, .270 and 6.5s are all flatter shooting, less recoil and suitable for all but a couple N American species. And for those you skip .30 and go to .338.

I guess that you can measure any products success by the number and volume of its detractors.
The fact that folks are still buyin' 'em (.30-'06
) don't really mean that much.
I mean if'n a fella needs a 300 H&H to kill a little deer, I can only wonder at what he'd need to kill a bear.

Just to add to what others said, with very little research (read Marine Sniper, 93 Confirmed Kills), the great Carlos Hathcock choose the .300 Win. Mag to win his Wimbelton Cup(s).

If I had to have a .30 cal magnum, I'd go with the Win Mag just because things are more common for it, but not a lot wrong with the old H and H. Little more than I need and in that game class I prefer the 7mm Rem Mag, but hey, I'm not gonna argue on nuance. I just really don't need a long action belted magnum for much, but that don't keep me from owning the 7 and I ain't lookin' to sell it. The .308 is perhaps the best deer/hog caliber ever created..:neener:..and it's all I need around here. Just how dead can ya kill 'em, anyway? I really like the M7, though, fantastic, light, handy hunting rifle that's amazingly accurate and it suitable for brush hunting or canyon spot and stalk. Big magnums tend to be bulky, cumbersome, and heavy.

I could go with a .30-06, but I fail to see where it'd do anything more than my little M7 and I can't get a M7 in .30-06, being a short action gun. The .308 will kill anything the .30-06 will kill, though, and just as dead. I like the fact that I can come into surplus brass cheap from time to time, too. :D The .30-06 WAS a military round. The .308 still IS a military round and those miniguns spit out a LOT of brass a guy like me could use. I like to run down to the range when the coasties qualify with that M60, too, brass everywhere. :D

you mean the marlin camp carbine is a no-go for hunting? :neener:

I even have a 6-44x 55mm scope on it!!! its good to 1200 yards according to the BDC on the turret!?!?!?!!

If you like the 300 H&H Magnum then good.

Its like playing chess. Better have a reason to move that piece. Better have a reason to have that .30 cal carbine, 30-06, 300 Winchester mag, 300 H&H Magnum.

Never seen a deer with a super tough hide. I live on the east coast so that rules out 700 yard shots. Move one pawn forward, 30-06.

Better leave that .30 cal carbine for coyotes and Home defence. Move again.

Got a new job and coworkers go hunting out in Colorado every year. I might think about getting....

I took the .300 Weatherby to Africa and it worked well to Eland. It shoots 220 grain RNFMJ bullets at 2700 fps if you want! I have a friend that swears by one in Africa A LOT !
The .308 always did it for me in ultra light guns in vertical and far off places.
The 30-06 certainly can do it all, and is probably the BEST all around !

If I could only have one .30 caliber hunting rifle, I'd want it to be in .300 H&H. YES, the rounds are expensive, but how many are you planning to use?
Secondly, the H&H can be handloaded to any ballistic level from .30 carbine (I'm not sure why I'd want to, either) up to...well, .300 H&H levels (duh). This is something that the .300 Winchester doesn't enjoy doing. Once in a while, a hunter will need a rifle with the power of a .30-30 or .308 and not much more. Appropriate handloading of the .300 H&H will deliver this. I'm not sure if the same can be said of the .308 Norma, but I know that downloading the .300 Winchester often gives poor results even when said results are not clearly dangerous.
Long live the .300 H&H.

As a huge fan of the '06 and the .308, I am planning on having a H&H built on a Ruger #1 action. Not b/c it will do anything the 30-06 won't do but b/c it will be a cool combo and it is a great round.

Just a question for the 300 h&h owners. Can the 300 h&h brass be made from necking down a 375 h&h case. Or is there a different parent cartridge. or having to reform the shoulder angle?
