I have always worked a job that has given me a lot of flexibility with my days. I used to be able to leave early, or take the day off on a regular basis. Since moving here to WI I am now working for a large company with a whole book of corporate policies. The amount of freedom I have with my days has greatly diminished. Since my weekends tend to be kind of full I don’t have a chance to get out and shoot as often as I would like to. I was talking this over with my wife, and we both decided that we could use a Monday to relax.

My main plan for Monday was to get some serious shooting done while Leanne wanted us to get to the fitness center. We made an agreement if I work out with her on a regular basis she will go shooting with me once a month! You might be saying that I am getting the short end of the stick, but I think I am coming out ok. What she doesn’t know is I don’t mind working out as much as I let on. In fact I might protest a little just for show. :D

After having a busy Easter weekend it was nice to get to Monday and not really have any sort of timeline. We lounged in bed for a while, and then got up.;) I started collecting all of the stuff needed for a range trip. After 4 arm loads of stuff I had the car all packed. I shoot at nice outdoor range that is about 5 minutes from our house. We got to the range and got everything pulled out of the car. Since I know that she is always concerned about safety we sat down and had a safety briefing. I went over keeping the guns pointing down range, no finger on the trigger until you are on target, and all the other safety rules. I could tell that this safety talk was something put her at ease. Usually she sees me cleaning my guns or working on them at the dining room table. While I do practice the four rules it is hard for her to understand just by looking all of the safety precautions I am taking. She did really well with all of the safety rules only once did I have to warn her about her trigger finger.

She has shot with me before but I never had quite the right gun for her. We started out shooting my Ruger 22/45 which she immediately took to. I started her shooting the 22/45 at one of my steel targets at 7 yards. She wasn’t having a lot of luck because she has so little experience shooting a handgun. I could tell that she was getting frustrated that she wasn’t hitting the steel flip up plates. I told her that we would switch her to paper until she got the hang of it. After 2-3 mags she was hitting the bullseye consistently. She then switched back to the steel reactive target. After I could tell that she could handle loading and shooting I started shooting my P89 at the full size steel plate rack we use in our leagues. I got a little preoccupied with that and forgot to check up on her. She finally came up to me to ask if she can move back the targets, and if I have any more .22s ammo!! I left her with 200 rounds and was surprised that she had shot it all. We did shoot some .38s in my Security Six, and in my Airweight S&W. She even shot the 8 inch plates from 10 yards!! She liked the fact that you had to hit those big plates several times with a .22 to get them to fall over.

In the end she admitted to having a “good time†and said that she would gladly come back with me next month. I don’t want people to get the wrong idea. I think very highly of my wife and do not want to sound like one of those over bearing husbands that thinks their wife is dumb. To the contrary I think my wife is smarter then I am. I am sharing this story so that other people that are trying to get their significant other out to the range can possible glean a little advice, and maybe some hope.

Here are a few factors that contributed to her having a good time.

  1. Having a gun that she wasn’t afraid of, and that fit her hand
  2. A thorough safety briefing
  3. Starting her out at an appropriate range to target(7 yards)
  4. Not trying to scare her with my big guns (.357, .40 or .44)
    [/list=1]

I hope this helps some of the guys, or gals who are trying to get their SO more familiar with shooting. Oh one more thing, she saw me looking at the Pac-Lite Barrels that are available for Ruger .22s. She loved the pink one, and now I am going to have to order one. When I get home tonight I will post some pics.

Great post. My wife and I recently began shooting together and it is great fun. Initially she got a Sig P239 in 9mm, but I quickly saw that it was a bit much for her to learn on. So for her birthday I got her a Walther P22 and she is in heaven. Most weekends we make it to the range and with the days getting longer we will sonn be able to grab an evening here and there.

I looked at a P22 a while ago. It seems like it would fit small hands very nicely. I like the fact that you can pick differant back straps for differant size hands.

Great post. I've been wishing my wife would get interested in shooting, but you've inspired me to give it another try. Might start with the .22 rifle at first, then the 22/45. Fun targets at short range might just be the ticket.

My wife had always shown a mild interest in guns and is quite understanding when it comes to me getting guns. She has gone shooting with me a few times a year and is familiar with the guns we keep for home defense. Despite this, I could tell that it was not her idea of good fun, nor was it ever done on her initiative. Several months ago she expressed interest in getting her CCW. I suggested that we go shorring and she pick out a gun she was interested in.

This made all the difference in the world. After some research, she decided she wanted a revolver. We went to several stores and handled 10 or so defferent guns. I was somewhat surprised when she picked a Ruger SP 101 in .357 mag. I figured she could always shoot .38’s. On the way to the range, she was pretty nervous and kept asking if I thought the recoil would be bad. I told her no, but that I wasn’t sure how she would react. After shooting 100 rounds of .38’s and 50 rounds of .357, she was hooked. She kept telling me over and over how much fun it was and she couldn’t wait to go again.

Sounds like a great time. I'll be taking the whole family to the range soon. They mostly shoot .22lr but hey as long as they shoot it is okay with me.
I am trying to get my wife to shoot something a little bigger but as yet I have had no luck in past. I'll keep on taking her to the range though!

My wife never wants to go , and then when we get there complains we didn't bring enough ammo. Last time it was six degrees and the wind was howling - I had to drag her home.

Her favorite is the CZ75bd with a Kadet kit , but she also likes her Bersa .380 now that we got it working.

The promised pics

I said I was going to post some pics, but never did get around to it. Here are the pics from trip the range my wife Leanne and I made on Monday.

Couple of things worth noting.
One While we were at the range I didn't notice that she was holding her pistol a little unconventionally, and two the target she is holding up was not her best of the day. There is one pic of me shooting at the plate rack which is 15 yards away.

Dont worry I won't let her do the thumb wrap around thing anymore she is just asking for trouble. I told her what to do with her thumbs but she must have forgot. Lucky for her that it is only a 22/45 and not something bigger. :what:

For big grins spend a few bucks and get some shoot n c targets. They "light up: when hit and give immediated feedback.Get the packs with large and small targets.Best fun my SO has is to turn that whole bullseye bright yellar.;)
In general, gals don't take right off with rifles, their upper strength j ust won
t meld with a rifle all that well.
Slunds like you had a real fun range day. :)

Advise.

She needs to "choke up" on the Ruger pistol. That is, get her hands up much higher on the grip. That will help with groups, believe me.

By the way, you ever been to Toma ?

If you mean Tomah, WI I have been through there a bunch of times. It is right on the interestate on the way to Madison.

Sturm .... yep ... good post bud ... this gladdens my heart almost as much as parents with their kids. Great!

I've ''threatened'' .. no, suggested, Mrs P95 is overdue for some range time .... and I don't think it'll be a prob ... other than finding/making the time. She is way better than her intermittent shoots would suggest .. and I think in fact she is rather pleased with her abilities.:)

It is difficult to get my wife to come out shooting with me. Time constraints, work, etc. I like to shoot a lot, I'm spoiled because the club range is 10 minutes away.

So this past Friday I say to her you know honey, we haven't gone shooting together since November 2003. So she finally concedes and off we go. Anyway I could not believe how well she shot, I set up two target stands one at 25 ft the other at 50 ft. of B-34 silohuette targets and she was all over the 9, 10 and X rings. And she never shoots! So I decide to "kick it up a notch" by setting up two B-27 silohuette targets and having her shoot fast pairs at them. She started from a low ready position, and at the buzzer (me buzzing) she shoot two and two.

I couldn't believe how well she shot, I've kept the targets and it wasn't a fluke as she could do it consistently. She was shooting my G19 better than I ever could. Luckily I can shoot my CZ-P01 better than I can the G19. She seems to be a natural, and sure put the pressure on me to shoot better.

If she gets really interested I'll have to start reloading and practicing more to try and keep up.:uhoh:

Regards,

Luis Leon

LOL,, be careful what you wish for. I taught my wife how to shoot and now she's on the U.S. International Muzzle Loading Team and I'm her 'support staff'. Took her to a benchrest match last fall, she got third over all.

Great gal..

sturm, good work!

It makes your life a lot easier and more fun if you can involve your wife in the shooting occasionally. My wife started out hating guns, and she still doesn't like them, but I've convinced her to go shooting a few times and once--to my amazement--she actually hung up her target, from a session with a Buckmark, on the refrigerator for about two weeks. Ever since then, her resistance to my gun purchases has declined considerably.

Resistance is futile. She will be assimilated.

Hey, sturmruger, nice to see you had a fun day! It was beautiful out Monday. I and my boss took my two sons shooting. (Well, OK, only the 10 year old got to shoot. The six year old was having too much fun pestering all of John's animals!) First we went to Fleet Farm to get him a Mosin Nagant, picked out a nice 1937 Tula arsenal Model 91/30, (the long one), and he couldn't take it home cause his DL still had his old address on it!:(
(Must be a Fleet Farm thing, cause he's bought guns with it like that before.) So, we went back to his place, near Knapp, and shot my Mosin Nagant (M38) , his M1894 .44 Mag Marlin, his new Kimber Elite, and my Kel-Tec SUB2000 9mm carbine. My son loves shooting the Kel-Tec, and was hitting the gong at 75 yards!:D (That's my boy!) John was really anxious to get his Mosin after he shot mine! We shot up about 100rds. of 7.62x54R, and he was grinnin' from ear to ear!:D
Nice to see your wife shooting, looks like she had a lot of fun! Mine will very ocasionally shoot, but only pistol, thanks to her brothers!:fire: ( Hand a 10 year old girl a shotgun and not tell her it kicks, will you!:cuss: ) I need to get a decent pistol again, then maybe she'll shoot more!;)

Sounds like you guys had allot of fun.

Entropy you should try one of those Ruger .22 pistols. They a great little pistols that are easy for girls to shoot. My little sisters just love my Ruger .22s. My favorite thing is the price. I got mine for around $220. A $8 brick of ammo goes a long ways.

I have owned and liked several MkII's.:) Actually, I was looking at some P22's at the Eau Claire gunshow a while back, and like you, I like that you can change the backstraps, a la M1911. (course those only have two choices.) My sons would be able to match the grips with their growing hands, and my wife would be able to shoot it, too. Right now the only .22 pistol I have is a POS Iver Johnson that shaves lead and is horribly inaccurate. (No, it's not just me, it's the gun!:p )
Bonus on the P22: there are barrels and suppressor kits readily avialable for it. I remember your interest in such things.;)
