'Answers to Lucky': Dog run down, shot, frozen and survives

CLEARLAKE, Calif. (AP) - A dog named Dosha may have as many lives as a cat.
She was hit by a car, shot in the head and kept in a freezer for two hours, but she survived and is now doing well under a veterinarian's care.
Local animal groups and the Humane Society of the United States have begun fund-raising efforts to pay for her care.

Last Tuesday, Dosha was hit by a car. A Clearlake police officer reported to the scene and no one could tell him who owned the dog.

Officer Bob MacDonald shot the dog, apparently to save her the pain of her injuries. Dosha, presumed dead, was taken to Animal Control, where she was put in a freezer.

About two hours later, Denise Johnson, Animal Control's interim director, was at the impound facility and was told of the incident.

"Apparently, it was assumed dead," Johnson said. "I went to the freezer and found that she was alive and cold."

She had hypothermia and a gunshot wound, but no broken bones from the car accident, Johnson said.

Police are investigating.

It could be a bullet fired from the back of the head forward. I’ve never had to shoot a dog but I could see how that would be the way a person would do it.

take a line from each ear hole to the opposite eye. Where the lines cross, place the bullet perpendicular to the plane of the bone.

Works for dogs, horses, cattle, deer, and probably other animals. Don't look at the eyes.

Why not look at the eyes? Is this a compassion thing or is it because the animal may sense soething and move or what?

Why not look at the eyes?

Because the eyes will distract you at the time, and will distract you later (sometimes much later) from the fact that you were simply doing what needed doing. Horse's eyes, large dogs' eyes, and other larger animals seem to hurt worst of all, because the irises and whites are very human in appearance. Don't underestimate the compassion thing.

The good news is, I caught some video of this poor doggy on the evening news. He was happy, jumping around like a puppy, licking his owner's face and in general appeared 100% healthy. I saw both sides of the dog and apart from the gunshot wound, he had no signs of other injuries, no other shaved spots, bandages or stitches.

So it's a good bet he'll recover fully.

The cop was a complete and total idiot.

The dog had *just* hopped his owner's front fence, and was close enough that the owner heard the gunshot and came running, catching up just as the cop hauled the "dead" dog away . Other people were present and saw the whole thing. The dog appears to be a tan lab mix of modest size, and the news video showed it near several other people besides it's owner at the vet and it showed no signs of aggression at all. Given the dog's mobility after all it's been through, it's obvious all it had was a concussion until the dang cop came along :banghead: .

The cop didn't even ask anybody whose dog it was, or check it, or take any other reasonable action.

Given the idiotic gunplay and the utter lack of compassion and *awareness*, the cop should in my opinion be fired.

No, sir--Not a stupid question at all.

Matt G answered it exactly. Perhaps I just have too much empathy--For the animal, for the absent owner, whatever. I made a hasty, bad shot once - - bird dog vs. semi. Luckily, the poor beast remained in place for the second.

I'm a hunter, I kill game animals, and eat most of what I shoot. I just don't care to see needless suffering.

Norman Guest? Seems my father's uncle, Weldon Guest, had a son named Norman-- He'd be in late 50s -- early 60s now, and I think he worked in the Oklahoma education system in some capacity. They were from around Ryan, Jefferson County, Oklahoma. Uncle Weldon had the W. W. Guest Hardware in Ryan for several decades. Would you have met Norman in that part of the country?

They had Dosha, the owner and the vet that saved Dosha on the Today show this morning. Dosha did not get shot in the face!! The wounds on her face are from being hit by the car.

The cop shot Dosha through the top of skull very near the right ear. The wound on her neck, below her jaw is the exit wound. They also showed an X-ray of the dog's skull and it clearly showed the bullet path, which was about 1 to 2 bullet diameters from the right edge of the dog's brain. Lucky for Dosha she has a big head and a little brain, which appeared to me to be about half the diameter of her skull.

Lucky dog. The owner should sue the department for cruelty to animals.

I'm glad to see it alive and well. Dogs suffering gets me right in the heart. I had to put one down I hit in a car a long time ago (it was really screwed up). I still have nightmares about it, even 15 some years later. I'm a big baby, and I admit it.

I saw the dog on the news and it did have a shaved patch on the back of its head near the right ear with a dark spot in the middle of it.

Lucky for Dosha she has a big head and a little brain, which appeared to me to be about half the diameter of her skull.

Even dumb dogs get lucky sometimes (the sun shines on a dog's *** every once in a while).

That dog takes a lot of killing. I have had a dog jump out of a second story window to no ill effects. They are tough. If a 3000 lbs bullet at 30 mph(?) did not kill it what made the cop think a handgun could kill the dog. Patrick
