and they shoot Remington/UMC around here.

I'm curious.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and over the last couple of years... since the election of Obama the lesser, I've been shooting a lot of handgun ammunition.

We have a lot of public land here so I shoot with everybody else at a few common locations around Portland Oregon.

To mitigate cost I've taken up handloading and I pick up a lot of empty brass... so I've got my own unscientific survey of what everybody else is shooting.

Here in these parts average Joe, if you look in his gun, odds are about 1 in 3 that you'll find R-P (Remington/UMC) headstamps on the ammo.

After that, there's about a 1 in 5 chance of finding either Winchester or Federal... with Blazer being a distant fourth at about 1 in 10.

My sample is based upon about 11,500 rounds of 9mm, 380, 38 Special, 357 and 45 acp brass collected.

Locally, Walmart generally has the best prices, often lower than others sale prices... Remington/UMC in the 250 round yellow box runs a little more per round, and a lot more at the register than the Winchester white box of 100... which runs a little more more per round and a lot more at the register than the Federal champion in a box of 50.

I find the most expensive plinking ammo most followed by the middle of the road (best brass) with the least expensive stuff bringing up the rear.

If I were guessing, I'd be way off.

Is it a geographic thing?... Raised on rain and Remington?

Are the locals just no good at math?

Is the UMC way better ammo?... I've never noticed substantial difference between the three.

Is your ammo can stocked about the same?

Myself, when I buy my plinking ammo, I shoot a lot of Federals and WWB... I do buy a little UMC when it's on sale, generally the cheap hollowpoints, but I've never sprung for the big yellow box.

Pmc, PPU, aquilla, and wwb seem to predominate in this area.

Your survey could be compromised by the fact that seasoned shooters will pick up the quality brass and leave the crap (Wolf, CCI) behind.:p

On a serious safety note, you do know you can't reload the Blazers, right?

LD

Are you sure those are Fords? I drive a Ford also.....yet it is actually 'Mazda Tribute' with 'Ford Escape' logos on it. ;)

I shoot whatever...it tends to vary from gun to gun though;everything from Brown Bear to Tula to CCI to Remington to WWB to S&B to Fiocchi to Aquila to whatever is cheap and reliable for me.

BTW: What is unsafe about reloading 'Blazer Brass'? The OP doesn't mention aluminum cases at all, he specifies BRASS.
.

Around here we can not find ammo from wal-mart ... We do not have a wal-mart! 8)

I see a pretty healthy mix, to be honest, but i very, very rarely find non reloadable ammo. If i do, usually in .223. As for cars ... I drive a sporty little hatchback?

Accept for the two calibers I don't reload (9mmx19 and of course 22LR), I only buy ammo that comes in reloadable cases. In fact, I've been known to buy factory .44 ammo after running the numbers and concluding that having the ammo to shoot today and quality brass for later is a better deal than buying once-fired mystery brass. Everybody's different in that regard.

When I pick up pistol brass, it's an even mix of the most common stuff folks have already mentioned. I rarely find any leave-behind rifle brass in calibers I use (7mmRM, .223, 45-70).

I drive a station wagon, but again, that's just me. It provides good interior space but still handles like a sedan. It's not a Ford.

I think UMC's "value pack" advertising on the 250 round box sells the bigger boxes. I've even had one guy in line comment to me that I should buy the "value pack" instead of all the little boxes because it is cheaper. I tried to explain that the cost per round was cheaper, but he was insistent on the 250 round box being a better deal. It really boggled my mind. I checked out with 300 rounds for less than his 250 round pack, but he just never seemed to get it. It wasn't a a quality thing in his mind, it was a perceived value in the value pack. Oh well...his money, not mine.

perceived value in the value pack

People shop the wholesale clubs and buy the 40lb box of cheerios believing the same thing, but never actually doing the math. Then they wind of tossing 2/3 of the box when it goes stale.

Around here you either find winchester white box or non reloadable cases from blazer or other steel/aluminum/unknown material so if I were to venture a guess we shoot the cheap stuff and have alot of reloaders that pick up the better brass.. oh and we drive Chevys and Fords mostly with Dodge and the foreign trucks (Tundras etc...) coming up 3rd

Personaly I shoot wwb or my reloads and I pick up all of my own brass and I drive a ford

I see a lot of Federal brass ... but then again, the Federal Ammunition plant is about 20 miles away.

Other way around; The Tribute is a rebadged Escape, just as the Navajo was a rebadged Explorer and the B2300/3000/4000 are Rangers. Notice the new Mitsubishi Raider a couple years back? Looked and awful lot like a Dakota, didn't it? Guess what? It is, and built here. Just as your Escape was. Look at your VIN; I'll guarantee the first digit is a 1 (USA) 2 (Canada) or 3 (Mexico), rather than a "4" or "J" (Japan).

Sorry, this may be off topic, but are you suggesting that any Blazer headstamped ammo is not suitable for reloading, or just the silver/aluminum colored cases?

I reload, but usually when I buy factory ammo, its Fiochi for my .38 (it was all the store had) or UMC(? I think, its the one that comes in the orange box with the picture of a guy shooting a long gun on the side.)

I try and pick up all my own brass, but it does tend to scatter a bit when shooting one of the autos.

I drive a Volvo.

You can't shoot Cheerios in your Glock!

Nushif,

You folks don't have a Wally World? I wish I could send you a couple of ours for Christmas!

I see a lot of wwb and federal boxes at the range, and that's what I usually shoot, because it's (usually) the cheapest. But I drive a VDub!

No, but if you're really good you can shoot Cheerios with your Glock.

I'm not that good.... I don't think I'd give them a chance to get out of the box before I shot them.... and I'd probably use a shotgun....

Being from the Pacific Northwest myself, I may have an answer to why UMC brass is so commonly found on the ground out in State Forest land.

Bi-Mart!

Bi-Mart has by far the best prices on handgun ammo, and about once a month, they put all their handgun ammo on sale ($2 off per box). Their shelves are usually loaded with Remington UMC, and being the cheapest brand on the shelf, you can't beat it for range ammo. I get 115-grain 9mm UMC for about $11/box, and I love it when their 100-round value pack of Federal 5.56 goes on sale for $29.97. No sales tax in Oregon means you're down to an honest $.29/round through your AR-15. Not bad. Their reloading bullets are also at least $2 cheaper than other stores locally. I love Bi-Mart.

You can reload brass Blazer, just not the aluminum. I drive a Toyota and a Ford (not at the same time)

i drive a little Hyundai... and i shoot cheapo tula 9mm and 7.62x39 steel case.
Since I'm the only one shooting where i do (Land owned by a friend of the family)
the only "Brass" i find is mine :)

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding... We have a winner!!!

Actually, since there's no prize, I'm gonna declare it a tie... Kas1981 and OregonJohnny likely have both solved the riddle... Bi-Mart explains why you see so much Remington/UMC around here.

Funny thing... last two boxes of ammo I bought were UMC 38 Special +P cheap hollowpoints... for $2 off per box... at Bi-Mart.

Great store here in Portland and all over Oregon... they carry reloading supplies at good prices and they regularly put reloading powder, bullets and primers on sale.

Employee owned too... I spend a lot more dollars at Walmart... but I make it a point to spend every dollar that I can at Bi-Mart.

Well, I hate to say it but $11.00 for a box of 9mm range ammo is sort of middle-priced to me. I order most of my stuff online and 9mm ammo can still be had for less than $10.00 a box most of the time--even less if you order cases of it.

But then, I drive a Dodge diesel truck and I buy any brand of ammo that's the cheapest that day.
