thinkin about an sks...

I am looking to get into one of these (an SKS) as well. Was going to get a Mosin but I figure it will prove more prudent to go ahead and kill two birds with one stone now (hunting and combat rifle).

LGS has a Chinese with a very light folding stock for $325. Do the Chinese/Norinco or D/M models take AK magazines or "high" capacity magazines made specifically for the SKS? Is there any difference in quality between the external magazine varieties and the internal? I know the Russian is the crown jewel but I doubt I'll find one of those for $350.

Should I just go for the Chinese folder or try to find something more traditional? I really like the idea of detachable mags and a lighter stock but I want to make sure I get my money's worth.

I personally dont like shooting the sks and the chance of slam fires I hate, but to each his own, as far as 22s go I am a huge rimfire fan, you cant go wrong with a 1022 which is a fun plinker but just to let you know I just sold my 1022 to help fund a cz455 22lr because now im into bolt actions, both great guns but off the shelf I believe the cz to be much more accurate

9thchild: lots of people like to keep the sks in military form. that's fine, good for them. Personally I thought that the short wooden stock was crap and got rid of it asap. I also got rid of the bayonet. All that to say, don't sweat "traditional" I eventually sold my sks as I found it front heavy and inaccurate (probably could have fixed inaccurate with some tech sights. my eyes are getting old)

the triggers are garbage for the most part, but there is a pretty good video floating around about how to fix that. It works pretty well. I did 3.

finally, I sort of regret letting the sks go. you couldn't beat it for 100 bucks. If I was to replace it I"d hunt around for a paratrooper model. They're lighter and balance far better.

It should take standard AK mags and be just as reliable. As for the stock it can always be replaced but remember that it will never be an "original" rifle and its value takes a hit because if that.

Ignorant question...

Why bother with a SKS when you can easily get a AK?

There is a model of chinese sks' that takes ak mags but I have never seen one, every chinese sks I've ever seen has taken the sks hi caps.

the op made his decision but I will add this anyway:
I would decide between cheap plinking fun, or hunting ability.
punching paper 10/22 and..
If you're thinking critters bigger than rabbits, get the sks

The norinco model D and M take them.
I'm asking because I'm not sure but were all chinese sks' made by norinco? Most of the sks' I are yugos I've seen 1 albanian and a couple of russians. I have seen quite a few chinese ones but apparently none of them were the norinco d or m models, does that mean they were another model of norinco? I wold imagine that most if not all the norincos were the civillian exports and somebody else made them for the chinese military but I could be wrong.

Theres plenty in every gunshows. If you find one in excellent condition with original wood, bayonet and cleaning rod, most can go as low as $250 max. If in very good condition, it be in the $200 low end.

AK-mag-accepting SKS models came under SKS-D, SKS-M, MC-5D, and Sporter names, with a Paratrooper here & there, all by Norinco. They vary by barrel length, Monte Carlo or thumbhole stock, and bayonet or not. The holy grail of Chinese SKSs, in my opinion, but you'll pay dearly for one - typically $675 and up...way up. A guy I know locally has one, a Sporter model, and it's awesome.

I keep an SKS and a 1000 rounds behind the seat in the truck. Not sure why but I do. I love it cheap to shoot MOD at 200 easy. Further that that I dnt use the SKS :)
