Thinking maybe a 6mm ARC bolt gun

I see that factory ammunition is available for this round, which would provide me with a brass supply. Howa and Savage have examples, I would probably get the Howa mini. Any opinions from current or former owners? Not for hunting, I’m a target shooter, so this would be a range toy.

I can't speak for bolt actions in 6 ARC since I shoot left handed. I contacted Savage and was told that a left handed bolt action in 6 ARC would be a custom order. But I have been quite pleased with the 6 ARC out of my AR with an Odin Works 18" barrel. This is a very accurate round and you can actually push it a little hotter in a bolt action than you can in an AR.

Yes, that’s exactly what I read. I also considered a 6ARC upper but I’ve been losing interest in AR-15.

My guess would be that the Savage has more accuracy potential than the Howa. But the Mini's are cool little rifles. I don't think that you could go wrong either way.

Savage has two models, Axis 2 and Model 110. I have one of each in other calibers. I agree on the accuracy, but the Howa bolt is so much smoother, and in my opinion, a better magazine. If cost weren’t an issue I’d go with the 110.

I was looking a couple of years ago and was seriously considering the 110 Tactical. That was the only model in 6 ARC that Savage offered at that time.

I finally ended up with an American Predator in 6.5G. 6 ARC ammo and brass was practically non-existent then, which entered into my decision pretty heavily.

I would go with a 21" barrel or even a 24" barrel on a bolt action. And if going with a Savage, I would definitely get their heavier contour varmint barrel. The Savage varmint barrels always shoot very well for me. I have an older stagger feed Model 12 FVL in 308, MkII GVL in 17m2, and a MkII BTVLSS in 22lr and all are accurate.

I like the idea of a mini action but that would be an expensive rifle for me since no one makes a left hand mini action.

Could you enlighten me? You’re not referring to Ruger American? A long heavy barrel would be my preference.
Can't guarantee it but I assume he is referring to an American Rifle Company action. A friend of mine just built a 6 GT on one of their Coup de Grâce actions, very nice action and what I'll be using for my next custom as well.

Id love to use an ARC action, but they are out of the price range for this build (id probably go with the Dasher instead on a full custom).

What I've got planned is to use a Ruger American in 6.5 Grendel as the base. Then as funds allow add a heavy varmint 24-26" shaw barrel, and either a boyds PRO-V or a Magpul Hunter stock.

The idea is that its the cheapest way to get 90% of what i want, and the American in 6.5Grendel will serve very well untill i can get the parts together to assemble the 6ARC.

That is certainly a much cheaper route to go.

I do wish the Ruger had interchangeable bolt heads like the savages, if they did I would probably do the same with the one I am about to list for sale.

That's going to be an interesting comparison, the Ruger 5 groove CHF barrel vs. the button rifled Shaw, 4 groove I think.

Ruger advertises their Precision Rifles as having 5R barrels, while the American only gets 5 groove. I dunno, these lands look kind of trapezoidal to me.

I have a Savage Model 11 I purchased as a Barreled Receiver with zero history on the 243 barrel. The purchase was made with the intention of barreling it with a Shilen 26" 7.5 twist 4 groove in 6ARC. The idea behind this was to compete against some 6BR in a short range (100/300yd ) informal bench league. As from the data I've looked at there is not a lot of difference when they are loaded the same. Only this will be 1/5th the cost of those custom guns.

Right now that action is still barreled in a Model12 223.

Ive got a few shaw barrels, ill see what groove number they use. I didnt bore scope any of my Americans i dont think, but id honestly guess they would end up pretty comparable.
Every Shaw ive had were capable of sub moa, as were nearly every American. A couple of both have been pretty stupendous.

That 6arc Shaw barrel I've got looks like the normal 6 grove, but it's been shooting the factory 105s around 1/4 moa and the 108s around 3/8 moa 3 shot groups. I shot a few five shot groups and were 1/2 moa, shot one 10 round 5 of each and that was around 1/2 moa as well. Both shoot about the same poa at 100 yards so that's nice. I hope this weekend to pop a deer with the 108 eldm and see how that acts.

I see shaw has 30% off right now on the barrels, they have the 18" for $ 165 to bad it's heavier then what I want tho. They call them hbar but there not as heavy as a colt hbar. I've got some 107 Sierra I want to try once I finally get around ordering some dies. Been very happy with the Shaw barrel tho.

Yeah gonna try get mine on order by the end of the month.

Thats about like my "best" shaw barrels have shot. Looking forward to hearing how you do with your AR on deer.

Think there's like 15 days left on the 30% off sale, that's probably better then dels discount. I should really order that 9.3 barrel, it's only like $35 extra for the stainless now. I see they charge now for a few extra things like barrel crown believe that used to be free unless you got it threaded. Doing that 09 Argentine mauser with a stainless barrel and action in the white maybe cool, could do the clear ceracoat.
