thinking of getting a target gun.

Randy1911,

That's a great price for a 14-1. FYI - sometime in the early 80s, S&W stopped 'inning' their revolver barrels and went to a crush fit. usually when
a model gets a -1, -2, and so on, it means S&W changed the way they make
the model, usually meaning they found a cheaper way to produce them. THis doesn't mean the next way they did it was inferior but some methods don't work out, some did. I think a 14-1 DOB is late '50s/early 60s so take of that one, you're the next custodian so to speak.

You bought a nice shooter. What type of target shooting are you going to start out on?
You should buy some brass, primers and powder in bulk to keep the cost of shooting down.

Try a 148 gr LHBWC over 3.5 grains of HP38 or W231. I have a 14-4 and this load gives great results; I got it from Hodgdon's web site. For self defense loads in my Model 10, I just bump it up to 4 grains. I leave my bullets sticking out of the case about 2/3 the thickness of a dime.

Have fun with the Model 14. They're phenomenal guns.
