My club started F-class this year and it sounds pretty cool to me, I love the idea and am thinking of getting (building up) a learner rifle. Now I'm talking budget stuff here so I know right of the bat I'll get smoked in competition which is fine, I'm just looking to get in at the bottom and learn my way up until the rifle is the actual hold back and not the shooter. We only have a 300yrd range, which is only available on shoot days and 1-2 days a month practice days with down sized targets to mimic the 600yrd and 1000yrd. So I'm looking for a set up for 300yrds but I'll be practicing mostly at 200 since I'm usually too busy on the 300yrd practice days.
Now I guess since its only 300yrds I could start out on my AR since I already have it and I would just need some glass and a bipod but hell a competition would give me a reason to buy a new rifle! Amiright! I am thinking of going with a 6.5 creedmoor bolt action something, probably a savage. From what I have read (not actually tried any yet) it has about the same trajectory as a 308 with less recoil, and barrels last longer. Not that I would ever reach the round count to burn out a barrel but you never know! They both seem to be about the same cost if, I haven't looked at reloading yet (which I would do of course in the long run) though I have heard/ read that the 6.5 is a little easier to reload. But this is all negotiable, I've been around rifles enough to know what I am looking at so that's not really my question.
What I need to know is about what glass I should be looking for. Big hangup....has to be lower cost probably around $300, I know that's a major hangup for a good quality scope but even that is going to be hard to swing. This scope/ rifle set up would be exclusively for competition and paper punching and I won't be traveling around to all kinds of competitions (for now) so it will be a fixed distance of 300 max with mostly 200 practicing. What power should I go for, is 9x enough for should it be more? Would it be cheaper to go with a fixed power than a variable? Would a fixed power give me better quality glass for the same or lower price of a variable?
Any help folks would be greatly appreciated, unless I come across a bag of money it will probably a year long save and build project as I gather funds and buy pieces.
God Bless all.
