My club started F-class this year and it sounds pretty cool to me, I love the idea and am thinking of getting (building up) a learner rifle. Now I'm talking budget stuff here so I know right of the bat I'll get smoked in competition which is fine, I'm just looking to get in at the bottom and learn my way up until the rifle is the actual hold back and not the shooter. We only have a 300yrd range, which is only available on shoot days and 1-2 days a month practice days with down sized targets to mimic the 600yrd and 1000yrd. So I'm looking for a set up for 300yrds but I'll be practicing mostly at 200 since I'm usually too busy on the 300yrd practice days.

Now I guess since its only 300yrds I could start out on my AR since I already have it and I would just need some glass and a bipod but hell a competition would give me a reason to buy a new rifle! Amiright! I am thinking of going with a 6.5 creedmoor bolt action something, probably a savage. From what I have read (not actually tried any yet) it has about the same trajectory as a 308 with less recoil, and barrels last longer. Not that I would ever reach the round count to burn out a barrel but you never know!:neener: They both seem to be about the same cost if, I haven't looked at reloading yet (which I would do of course in the long run) though I have heard/ read that the 6.5 is a little easier to reload. But this is all negotiable, I've been around rifles enough to know what I am looking at so that's not really my question.

What I need to know is about what glass I should be looking for. Big hangup....has to be lower cost probably around $300, I know that's a major hangup for a good quality scope but even that is going to be hard to swing. This scope/ rifle set up would be exclusively for competition and paper punching and I won't be traveling around to all kinds of competitions (for now) so it will be a fixed distance of 300 max with mostly 200 practicing. What power should I go for, is 9x enough for should it be more? Would it be cheaper to go with a fixed power than a variable? Would a fixed power give me better quality glass for the same or lower price of a variable?

Any help folks would be greatly appreciated, unless I come across a bag of money it will probably a year long save and build project as I gather funds and buy pieces.

God Bless all.

What glass will depend on what AR you have. Flat top or with the handle. Easier to scope a flat top by installing a rail.
The rifling twist of the barrel matters a bit too. Bullet weights matter. You do not want to use factory ammo unless you absolutely have to. Too expensive and it's like buying an off-the-rack suit. Sort of fits, but not quite. Reloading match grade ammo is not rocket science.
Forget about "I'll get smoked in competition" and do it because it's a lot of fun.
Wouldn't bother with a bipod myself. But do buy a shooting jacket and a mat. One of the blue foam sleeping mats will do nicely.
"...a reason to buy a new rifle..." "I want one." is all the reason you need. Entry level is one of the Savage Model 12's. Which one is about your budget. I'd be thinking F/TR in .308 myself. Maybe one of their LEO M10's though.

I too am considering f class. Presently building. Most of the posts on this site are old but yours is fairly recent. Before spending time responding, I would like to know if you are going to pursue this blog. Have much to contribute regarding build.

Open or TR? I am set-up to shoot both.
What distance(s) will you be shooting?

TR Rig for 1K matches. SEB Joy-Pod with Pod-Pad, SEB TR stock, Jewell trigger, Bartlein 10T barrel/308 Winchester, 20 MO sloped pic rail, NF scope. SEB Bigfoot Rear Bag

I'm trying to keep an eye on it, busy and stuff HA!

I was probably going to go for TR, preferably 308 over 5.56. The club website said they are suspending F-class for 2017 :uhoh: So I guess I'll have more time to think of a build.

Well, darn.
For 300 yards I would (did) shoot .223, even to 600. I tried to make the .223 a 1000 yard gun but it was not really up to it, no matter what the advertised BC of a long long .22 claimed.

Well I have a .223 now (AR) but the barrel isn't free floated. Though it is a 20" bull barrel, maybe I should just slap a bipod and scope on it and get out there.

If I were going to get into F class shooting I would take a hard look at Savage model 12 rifles. I'm not a big fan of accu-triggers but lots of people like them. I think you can buy one for $1300 or so and they're built like a true benchrest rifle.

I would get into F class but there isn't any place to shoot 300> around here. I would have to drive several hundred miles and spend the night which makes it cost prohibitive.

Well our range is only 300yrds, so ideas for good scopes that are budget friendly?

For a scope this will sound silly but budget is going to be around $300 or less. I think this will be just fine since for a while I'll not be shooting out past 300, but I understand if I step out of my range to real distance $300 glass probably won't be good enough to see clearly.

I shot a couple F TR matches last year so I'm no authority on the subject. I have a Remington 700 in .308 with a Sightron 36x scope on it. I had no trouble seeing the target at 600 yds through the scope. You need the magnification to see the rings at 300 yds even on the scaled down 600 and 1,000 yd target. Used Weaver 36X and Sightron 36X scopes can be bought for the $300 price. I see them come up for sale on rimfire central all the time. Either scope will serve you well and if at a later date you may decide to look for a higher end scope.

For a low cost scope I use a Mueller 8-32x44 scope on my Ruger Precision Rifle (6.5 Creedmoor). Plenty good for target shooting since you don't shoot in low light level environment like when hunting. Over 1200 rounds so far and no issues with the scope at all. They cost around $250 from Optics Planet. Fits my budget at the time. I (we - wife) have these scopes on RPR's as well as benchrest .22 rifles. So 4 scopes total and no issues with any of them.

That sounds very promising. How is the glass clarity at longer ranges or higher magnifications?
