I'm hoping my polite response will remain.
Here it is, in case it poofs.

I have also heard the arguement that no one ever talks about "knife control" and people are killled with knives all the time.
Rebuttal: you cant kill 1 person/second, at distance, with a knife, nor can you overpower someone that is much bigger than you. Guns can do these things. /QUOTE
From this, it would stand to reason that a physically smaller person is at the mercy of a physically larger person if only armed with hands or a knife. This is correct. It requires a very high amount of training to be effective with a knife and to not have the knife removed from you during a scuffle.
I'll let you know who I am. I am not a Bush supporter, nor a Kerry supporter. I do not find either to match my views, but both have some excellent points I can get behind, and some failings. I have still not yet decided.
I do own and use firearms for hunting, organized competetive shooting, and self defense. My wife relies on a firearm for as a part of her personal defense also.
I truly hope that neither one of us is ever forced to use one of firearms in an act of self defense, as the taking of a life for any reason is a damned shame, and will rest heavy on one's heart. But given the option of my, her, or our children's survival by undertaking the solemn task of firing on someone intent on hurting us, we are prepared to do so. We are both trained.
KenL is absolutely correct that it is extremely unlikely that one can draw, aim and fire accurately at someone who has already aimed a firearm at you. There is little one can do about this, but it is not the entire sum of situations in which a firearm should be brought to bear. If someone is kicking in your door, or reaching through the car window, or any other such moments of mortal danger, the presentation and intent to use a firearm has defused many a situation like this.
Police are an asset to society, and will do their best to protect you. But if the door is already coming down, or the car glass is already shattered, as fast as they move, it sadly may not be fast enough for you.
Like I said, I'm still pretty much undecided. Firearm rights are just one of the issues I'm concerned about, but I do not get a great feeling from either candidate. Less so from Kerry, due to past record of voting to eliminate or tax private ownership and usage of certain arms or ammunition.
best to you all- Cthulhu 138
