This might be a dumb question.

I'm left handed, and have never owned a left handed bolt action rifle. I have several right handed bolt action rifles (hunting, and varmints). I'm getting into target shooting (Single shot .223, and 17HMR). I'm looking at a Savage 12BVSS, but they don't offer it left handed.

Are there any advantages of using a left handed rifle at the range when it comes to accuracy?

I'm a novice shooter.

The stock fit is an issue, but that's all. If you can get a good cheek weld with a straight type stock, then there won't be a different. If you are using a big scope and need the comb of a monte carlo stock, then there will be an advantage to shooting a left handed gun.

On gun choice: If your budget allows, you might search around for a used left handed Savage or Remington in a sporter configuration and rebarrel it.

I am Right handed but I have a very dominate left eye so I have shot left handed most of my life, when I got older and more finacially able I purchased a lefty bolt gun and hated it, it felt foreign to me. I have discovered over years of target shooting and hunting that we left hand shooters enjoy the best of both worlds, I find that I have better control when shooting standing and shooting from the prone position with a bipod is great, I can put more rounds down range accuratly than most of the guys I shoot with. The only draw back to being a lefty shooter is that there are some semi auto rifles that are not our friend.:D

This is this! It's not something else, it's this!

Don't pull it if you don't plan to use it, and don't use it if you don't plan to kill!

ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR MEN AND WOMEN OVER THERE.

Im left handed too. I have never owned a lefty rifle and do not plan to. I have owned a cap n ball muzzleloader that was lefty though. I tend to think that is a little different.

If you dont buy lefty guns you will be able to sell them easier later on as well.

Thanks for the information. Makes sense to stick with what I'm use to and grew up doing.

I never thought about selling and trading later. Makes sense.

Shoot with your left hand and cycle the action with your right hand. That way you won't loose your sight picture as much and you'll be in relatively the same spot as last shot.

this works with rimfires but not with long-action bolt guns... I have to lift my cheek to get my face out of the way of the bolt.

no biggie, though.

This may also be a dumb question, but ... are top-eject lever-action rifles completely ambidextrous? Not that they would be a perfect substitute for a boltgun, I'm just curious.

Wanna shoot my M17? :neener: Interestingly, I have a lefty neighbor that I shoot with from time to time, that likes the M17, and despite my recommendation otherwise will fire it lefty every time...and it doesn't end well (no real injuries, but plenty of hot brass grazed his cheek). :)

The only autos I've personally had trouble with shooting lefty were subguns with suppressors. Lots of grease/crap/powder comes back through the gun and hits you right in the face. Wear eye protection. ;)
