My lgs has two rifles I am looking at it there still there by time I've got the money, one is a sporter 1909 Argentine mauser, it's a plan sporter, which is what I am looking for to use the action on for a sister rifle build for my 7x57ai, this will be a 9.3x62. The stock is just cut behind the band, the top hand guard is removed, it's chambered to 3006 but that's it. It's a dwm A prefix 9000 something. This would be a project for next year.

The other is a norinco sks, wood is dark but I didn't see any cracks in the wood. The metal looked fine and looked like all matching, can't remember if it was a threaded barrel or pinned same for the trigger guard but it's does not matter much. Think the kit and bayonet was missing but they may have just taken them off.

The mauser is $300
The sks is $395
What would you get it you wanted either.
money being tight I'll put either on layaway, the shop ddoez 45 days

It would mostly depend on how much 'affordable' ammo I could buy, or .....Already have bought.

Having so much 7.62x39 stored that a guy suggested it's best Not to state the quantity, the SKS is a clear choice.

Especially if I didn't have an SKS.

I'd grab the SKS.

You can find a Mauser cheaper to cannibalize for an action.

Probably not going to find a decent SKS any cheaper ever again.

Also, you got a source for a cheap 9.2x63 barrel? I've got a Mauser that's been bubba'd up that would be a great candidate.
This mauser is already cut, and there hard to find anymore, actions were selling for $500 on gb, even the bottom metal is worth a $150.
can get a barrel for $200 ish from shaw, about 300 for a mcgowen stainless.

Here about what I was thinking for the 9.3 not sure on length yet don't think I need it threaded for a break either. I'd like some nice sights from necg and some qd rings with a lpvo.

I've got the cz 527 in x39 so I've got a bit of ammo and reloading stuff, I'd have much more of I had the money. Last week there was a bunch of brass case around for 13-15 bucks for 20 and steel for 8-10 for 20 but Someone bought it all up, there is a group of guys around I think there them profiteers on gun broker. So I'll have to see if the shops get more 7.62x39 in.

Get both, those surplus rifles are only going to go up in price and they are great project guns
really wish I had the money, hard just trying to get one. I really want both, each will go up in price. I am very surprised the sks is still there the Russia ammo thing must have scared away buyers.

You say you already have a Mauser, I assume you don't have or haven't had an SKS.

Always fun to play with a new action, and a semi-auto battle rifle like the SKS won't be getting any cheaper.

Also, relatively inexpensive 7.62x39 ammo is a plus. I think you can figure out where I'm leaning....

Get the 1909 Argentine whether you get the SKS or not. It's not just a Mauser, it's a 1909 Argentine. They are well made, even by Mauser standards and has a hinged floorplate. I was blessed my father used a 1909 he picked up at Montgomery Wards for $79 to have a deer rifle built for me for my 12th birthday. It's action is very smooth. It's an excellent action to build a custom rifle on.

I picked both in the poll, because you should know better than to ask that question here. :p
But if it comes down to one or the other, I too would lean toward the Argentine Mauser. I found a pristine one at the LGS I smithed for, and my best friend bought it for his Dad. I got to watch his dad shoot it for the first time. The grin was worth it. He had had an 03 FFL in the 80's and it was one he'd always passed on, worried about ammo. Then he later regretted it after his 03 lapsed, and they got harder to find. It became on of his 'if I ever run across one' guns, and I'm glad I was able to help him realize that dream. He has since passed on, and now my friend has it, and shoots it once a year in commemoration.

I've had a bunch of sks's I've shot one of my first deer with one. I don't have one at the moment tho

Ya there a great rifle, some I guess don't understand what makes them nice. They were the action to have for years, now with custom actions and cz or Winchester out there.

Self-defense? SKS.

Project? 1909 of course. It's probably the best military Mauser out there. Superior floorplate & well finished receiver. Should have bought a ton when they were only $99.95 or $119.95.
My dad did many over the year from the 09 Argentine so they are special to me. Wish we had all the jigs we had then, think I can borrow the form to do the bolt handle any maybe the holder to hold the action in the lathe. Can't do much with dads old lathe but I can use it for basic things. I have the tool to true the bolt face.

May have a Smith do the base holes I don't have the jig anymore.

I'd probably go with the SKS. You can usually find quite a few good Husqvarna HVA or Mauser-action rifles in 9.3x62 at Simpsons as a base for your project gun:

yea they have some nice rifles usually when I'm broke lol. I would just like a9.3x62 on a 09 action to match my other rifle.

Since I won't have money to build the mauser for some time, I'll do things here and there and save up for what I can't do cheap. I am kinda hoping the rifle shoots, I've had a bunch of sporters shoot well as is. The gun was test fired so the 3006 chamber should be fine.

Build the rifle of your dreams. A nice bolt action chambered for one of the best medium bore cartridges, what is not to like?

Anyone can have a crappy self loading military rifle.

Kevin
I've wanted to build a 9.3 for years, really have no need for it, he good for bear and days in the brush. With the 7x57ai it will be a poormans safari combo. Plus the 9.3x62 was designed to get the most from a 98 action.

I bought a 1909 in like new conditon for cheap back in the late 60's. Ammo was the problem as it was so expensive. I sold the gun not knowing what the future would bring.
