I bought a 1909 in like new conditon for cheap back in the late 60's. Ammo was the problem as it was so expensive. I sold the gun not knowing what the future would bring.
Luckily the 7.65x53 is easy to make, this one is a 06 so even easier. Tho I wonder how many Argentine mausers were fired using 308 win ammo.

I'd go for the Mauser, and I'm an sks fan. But getting both is the 'real' right answer...

A 9.3x would be a perfect pairing to your 7x57ai.
Yes I know getting both is what to do lol, I'll see what I can do just paying for one is a pain at the moment. I've always thought a 7x57 and 9.3 were made to complement each other well, brass should be easier to get by time it's built can make from 3006 in a pinch but not the best.

Really same here the sks I can get out and shoot and the mauser will be waiting to be built, though I always wanted to hunt a season with old miliserp sporters.
Luckily, an SKS is an old milsurp. lol Plenty of good hunting cartridges for it.

When I lived in NY, DEC told me a block in an SKS magazine, like the wooden dowel limiter in a shotgun, was sufficient to legally limit capacity to 5.

I would put dummy rounds in the mag, there used to be a 5 rounder made for the sks but I haven't seen one in years.

I made a small wooden block, took all of 5 minutes to make, and stuck it under the lifter in the mag, done.

Dummy cartridges wouldn't necessarily limit capacity, just number of live rounds in the gun.

Five round mags for an SKS, when you can find one, are expensive and being aftermarket, may not work well.
