Those Open Arms
Editorial

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19775-2004Jul27.html

EVER SINCE July 1 -- when yet another gun-lovers' law loosened up Virginia's already lax governance of weapons -- it's been one big macho-fest for heat-packers who get their courage from strapping on pistols. Not every diner may relish the sight of six armed men at the next table, but unless the General Assembly comes to its senses next year, families out for a gathering will have to get used to pistols and ammo belts with their burgers and fries.

As reported by The Post's Tom Jackman, residents have been spotted around Fairfax County several times in the past six weeks exercising their new right to wear arms. Police commanders have had to issue reminders to officers that "open carry" is legal. Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, an organization of thousands of gun owners, insists that there has been no coordinated effort to strut with guns, but he notes that this "is a good opportunity to educate people."

At least "open carry" can be spotted. Carrying concealed weapons also is allowed, but that requires a permit issued by a local court. The most difficult thing to regulate, to be sure, is tempers. Residents just have to hope that they don't rub a gun-toter the wrong way. And don't look for any rescue from local officials. The new state law now prohibits any locality from enacting regulations on gun ownership, carrying, storage or purchase, except for rules relating to the workplace.

Maryland and the District don't allow all these "freedoms." So area travelers should be on notice: Virginia Is for Gun-Lovers.

I will never EVER do any business with anything or anyone related to that rag. Washington post? :barf:

In the 70s my father had to get used to vulgar T-shirts and women showing their navels on prime-time TV

Today I just have to get used to boy's with pants so big, and girls with pants so small that their butt cracks are exposed . Butt cracks no matter who's are not attractive. That's why God put them behind us, so we wouldn't have to look at them.

My wife has to get used to the fact that I will, on occasion, fart in a public place and blame it on her.

There is no constituional right not to be offended. If I'm not extremely offended at least once a day it just means that I stayed home all day, with the TV off, in bed, with the covers over my head, in a coma

Maryland and District residents should also take note of crime rates in the future, and they they dramatically don't fluctuate dramitically.

Translation: "I don't know anything about guns except that I am very afraid of them and feel very inadequate around them. Every time I see them I feel like my penis is too small. Maybe If I reverse this and accuse the gun owner of carrying guns because of feeling inadequate, i.e., bring them down to my own level, I'll feel better about my own lack of manhood."

See?

Open carry frightens the sheep and makes them wet their panties.

On the plus side, one of my neighbors just saw me open carry and decided to join the next THR range outing to brush up on his shooting skills. And presumed non-gunnie neighbors don't seem to freak out one bit, either.

a liar or a buffoon

...exercising their new right to wear arms.

Bovine effluvium. Nothing new about the right. All that changed on 1st July is local towns cannot pass more restrictive carry ordinances. So, for example, open carry in Falls Church is now okay.

The most difficult thing to regulate, to be sure, is tempers.

Oh, the blood-will-run-in-the-streets shibboleth. I guess the comPost's editorialists couldn't be bothered to fact-check. How many permit holders are doing time for randomly blowing someone away? What are the crime rates like in, say, Prince George's County, Maryland, or Ward 8 in the District? How would they compare with Fairfax or Prince William County, Virginia.

Virginia Is for Gun-Lovers

I want my bumper sticker!

I'm getting mighty suspicious about this torrent of publicity on open carry. Philip van Cleave and VCDL members meet every single month; they open-carry, as required by law, when they repair to a local eatery for some fellowship after their meetings. Not one article has been written about this until now.

Mebbe WildthiswillruinitforeverybodyAlaska was right...

I wonder if as a result of all this press on open carry in VA, that we'll see a decrease in crime in VA towns close to Maryland and DC and an increase in those locations?

When it comes to RKBA, the Washington Post editorial pronouncements are guaranteed to be lame. This is about the lamest one I have ever seen, and I usually read the Post five days a week.

It is more like a childess rant.

I have no doubt the presstitutes of the Washington Post will follow up with a story about the relative violent crime rates between Maryland and the District of Columbia, on the one hand, and northern Virginia... and it's going to rain nickels later this evening, too.
