I just picked up an S&W M 58 . It presently has Hogue rubber grips . I would like to switch to wood . I don't really care for the original service type grip .

Anyone have pics or preferences ?

Thanks

Greeting's Gentlemen-

I was in my favorite gunshop not long ago, just
browsing and noticed a set of finger-grooved
round butt, wooden grips with the S&W medallion
for an N-frame Smith. The grips were beautiful
natural wood; and lightly oil finished. Needless
to say, I plunked down the asking price of $40
and departed with them. They now reside on
my 5" barrel S&W 629-5 "Classic".

Go to CDNN investments:

and check out the inexpensive Siles grips under the Grips--S&W section.

Good luck!!

Thanks guys !

I like those grips . The problem is that they are for a round butt . I wish they made them for square butt .

Go to www.pickagrip.com

He doesn't have much in stock in the way of N frames right now. He just got in some spiegle boot grips and said he would get some Ahrends in in about 3 weeks. The Ahrends with no finger grooves are just about the perfect grip for me.

Thanks for the Ahrends tip guys .
I'll be at the SHOT Show next month . I think I'll wait and take a look while I'm there .

Thanks for the tips Richard , SWM and all . Gives me a place to start . I'll give them a try at SHOT and possibly be able to pick a nice set out there and bring them home :)

I always thought the grips on my Model 58 were to small also, I purchased a set of matching rosewoods for a Model 29 or Model 57 years ago and they have served me well. That said I shoot my M58 a lot usually 100-150 rounds per range session, and either I have modified my grip slightly over the years and just noticed in the last year or so that when I shoot that much the heal of the grip will bruise my hand eventually. I just got a M57 and I suspect since the frame and grips are the same it will have the same issue. I am going to find a set that the flat bottom is rounded off on the heal, more like the monogrip style, but not so extreme. The grip Richard posted looks good except that feature.

I have been looking at the Hogue round butt here:

I want to check with Herrett to see if the Jordan trooper is available set up that way, before I commit though.

If you run down a lead let us know.

I tried the Hogue Coco Bolo finger groove on an M28 . With full power loads . it "squirmed" too much . Had to get a fresh grip every few shots . They are a little thin for me . I think the Jordan's Richard chose will do a better job for me ?

Hmm, thin that doesn't sound good. Were yours checkered? I think that might help. I guess its time to give Herretts a call and see if I can get the rounded heal.

You're probably right . Checkered may have helped . The Hogues were on it when I bought it . They looked fantastic and felt great . Just didn't work for me .

I tend to like those big S&W factory target grips. However, those Siles look very appealing and don't appear to interfer with the operation of speedloaders.

4v50 Gary, I am curious. What is it you and others like about "those big S&W factory target grips?" The only thing I can think is people that like them like the look of checkering on the skin of their palm after shooting heavy loads. Regards, Richard :D

Sorry Richard . They went with the gun when I sold it :(
However , I recently replaced it with another 4" 28 . I'm keeping this one ;)

The factory target grips from the mid?60's on were always a little to wide at the butt for me . The earlier Smith targets weren't as wide . But , they're tough to find ! My 4" 28 and 6.5" 25-2 have the later targets . They're tolerable , but could be improved on .

Fitz Pistol Grips

Send for pics of Fitz N frame Gunfighter grips and I have them on my personal model 58. I also have some beautiful Iron wood grips that can only be carved on with a carbide cutter in a Dremel tool.

I will take some pics for my computer.

Getting Back To You, Guy-

While I perfer the rubber Hogue 'Monogrips" on the
heavy recoiling Smith N frames; I always did like the
large Goncolo Alves target woods on those square
butted Smith's. Too bad they quit producing those
models.

Thanks AD . While I can use them pretty well . I feel there's something better out there . Grass is greener ... I guess . If I can't find what I like at SHOT Show , it isn't out there :)

Fitz Grips

I have a pair of Fitz Gunfighter's on a 3.5" pre M27, and they are nice, good checkering with a good shape, they fit my hands well, & are comfortable to use. I'd definitely take a close look at them.
