Thoughts on particular .22 LR ammo

CCI is my favorite. Remington works just fine. But I stocked up on Federal bulk pack years ago.

22 mag remains hard to find around here.

I guess it isn't a very popular round because I don't see many people griping about 22 Mag availability but I agree completely. I had three thousand rounds 2 years ago and, with a bolt action rifle and one PMR 30 that my dad kept in his night stand, i expected that to last forever. I now have that PMR-30 back as well as another and I have had to resort to some high priced ammo online just to keep some on hand. $.27 a round is about the cheapest I have found online and I try to keep at least 1k on hand.

I'll agree on the Remington - I try to avoid it. Several duds, accuracy was poor and very dirty stuff in my Marlin 60. Federal was much better and Winchester was ok. I haven't bought 22 in the last few years so can't comment on anything that has been produced lately. I still have about 5500 rounds left from when it was running about $15 for the 500 round bulk packs.

Foth,
The other 455 (FS model) did 1 11/16 at 100 with those Rem Goldens last month in another project.

The Remington Thunderbolt should be avoided like the plague.

We used some for the Jr .22 program recently and it was very inconsistent. And a couple of rifles had issues with the rounds not allowing the guns to go into battery. Inspection showed poorly formed rims that were too thick and had a larger than proper radius between the rim and the side of the case.

I used to like CCI Velocitors .22LR. I haven't bought them for a while but I remember a scarey experience I had with them. I was shooting a real old cheaply made .22 single shot with Velocitors and suddenly the a piece of the firing chamber blew out and hit me in the face. I felt a sharp stinging feeling in my face and I am lucky I wore glasses because it probably hit me in the eye too.
I think that it was caused by metal fatigue. After that I just shot .22 CB shorts in that gun.
Lesson learned - buy a good quality .22 and it will last longer and be much safer.

Foth,
Thanks for the offer, but I'm WAAAAAAY too old to go through kids again. :)

I try to avoid Remington's .22 LR ammunition because it is dirtier than the Winchester or American Eagle I can find in bulk around here. I did have to shoot some at one point because it was all there was. Complete disassembly and thorough cleaning required after each trip to the range. Not funny with the Buck Mark.

If I were in the OP's position and had samples of ten different loads, I would spend a nice spring day at the range and find out what to avoid, what to look for, and what to accept if nothing better was available for MY guns. All the resources of the Internet cannot tell you what those individual guns will do better with.

That's what I would do also. You need to answer your own question. All rimfire does not shoot the same from the same rifle.

In general, I shoot Federal Lightning/Champion (510's) HV for plinking and fun and standard velocity stuff for target. I would buy all the CCI HV and SV you can find at a fair price. You typically can get good performance from them. CCI Blazer is good plinking fodder.

Aguila stuff is generally pretty good. But you have to shoot it and see how it does on paper.

I generally pass on Winchester 22LR. But, Winchester is better than nothin'.

I must agree with those who warned of the leading problems with Remington Thunderbolts. I witnessed a fellow club member shooting a Ruger 22/45 shooting Thunderbolts. He was key holing at 25 yards. His barrel had become so leaded that he was able knock chunks of lead from it with a cleaning rod. As for Golden Bullets, they have worked fine in all of my .22s. The Winchester white box bulk packed bullets are OK but seem to have more than their share of duds. My CZ 455 seems to have an appetite for the expensive stuff but, it does OK on some of the bulk ammo like Federal Auto Match, CCI Minis, and Golden Bullets.

My CZ 455 put 5 Remington Goldens into 1 1/8 inches at 100 yards last October.
Nice! The average above for five shots at 50yds was 0.49". Smallest is just over 0.30". Wolf Match Target beat that average by a tenth.

That's real good with Golden Bullets. With better ammunition, you're generally talking increasing the precision by 1/10ths and more consistant groupings. That can be significant if it is important to you.

I just mentioned those two CZs & what they did as examples of what the Golden has done for me.

I have some old Thunderbolts sitting in the basement bullet mine, but have not used them in a while.

I see people regularly knocking the Goldens, and we all have our own experiences, but I'm just not seeing it.
That stuff works consistently well for me in everything I shoot it in.

Sometimes middle-of-the-road in accuracy, sometimes at the top.
I don't get unusual fouling & I don't recall the last misfire with it. :)

I could probably do better in accuracy with higher-grade stuff, but what I get is more than good enough for what I need.

I don't shoot paper just small game hunting. Maybe a bit of plinking. I've tried new and improved golden bullets. I got a lot of FTF or FTE. I've managed to stock up on cci mini mags solid and hollow points. American Eagle Aguila federal Blazers Winchester super x and cci subsonic. I'm set for awhile and both my 39a love this ammo. I hear remington golden bullets have some what improved. I might pick up a brick and run a few.

Denis-

Already been graduated with a doctorate. No school needed. I said I could feed myself and need no curfew at age 68. So far, I can clean up my own mess. That is the only unknown as to how long that can last.

PLEASE !!!!!

I shoot most of my 22 ammo through a lever action and I can't think of any that give me real issues. I think semi auto 22s can be more fussy. I'd keep buying what you can. When the next ammo crisis hits you can always trade it for some other caliber.

The only thing I saw on your list that I absolutely wouldn't buy are the Remington Thunderduds.

Their recent production lots have the worst FTF rate of any ammunition I've EVER used.

Far worse than 80 year old, poorly stored, French military surplus 8mm Lebel.

I used Thunderbolts in the past but had been in the habit of using Golden Bullets because they're a better game bullet. After seeing all the internet whining about Thunderbolts, I went and bought some to see what all the fuss was about. Thinking they might have changed since I used them last. I put all 300rds downrange in short order, I believe through my Ruger 22/45. ZERO malfunctions. I concluded that it was as it had always been, that .22LR's firearms will always show a preference for one load or another and many will find something they choke on. People just like to complain about Remington and like yelling "fire!" in a crowded place, the panic is contagious.

I gave a relative some 22 LR this weekend so he and his sons could blast some. A brick of Thunderbolts and a 100 count Mini-Mag. The three of them shot all 600 rounds and he said they did not have a single misfire or FTF of any kind. I have no idea what guns they used other than a Mossberg Plinkster they borrowed form me.
