I'm thinking about getting an 1100 with a 21" Cylinder bore that would be primarily for HD and range/fun. I already have a Mossberg 590 Special Purpose for HD, so really I'm already set and know it. However, this Remington 1100 Magnum with rifle sights looks and feels good. I just don' want to buy a problem gun.

If I got it, I would want to add a Wilson 2 round mag extension.

My questions are 1) Are these generally reliable enough for HD? 2) Will the mag extension change that reliability negatively? and 3) Is it true they don't cycle cheap bird-shot rounds reliably (thereby greatly diminishing the fun factor)?

Any answers or other thoughts would be appreciated.

I believe all RS 1100 Remington barrels have a 2 3/4" chamber and the smaller single port so field load bird shot will work fine,it does in mine. I campaigned an 1100 with extended mag from Soldier of Fortune #2 3 gun in the early 80s until the early 90s. It ran like a top! Change the cheap O rings once in a while and keep it lubed and it is a great soft shooting gun. I use a 3" mag 1100 with an extra 21" RS barrel (both the 3" barrel and the RS barrel have Rem chokes) as a go anywhere and do anything gun.:)

I remember reading someone's claim that full power buckshot loads would cycle the action without the O rings installed. I'm curious if this is common with most any 1100.

For HD I highly recommend a pump. Especially an 870. My 870 is 40 years old there abouts. In all that time I have fired factory and reloads, light and magnums, bird buck and slugs.

It has NEVER jammed or failed to fire for any reason. Dirty, wet, dropped, clean and unclean that machine just keeps on throwing lead.

I can field strip it blindfolded quicker than a Nave Seal and put it back together. It is EASY.

The only bad thing is that after blowing thru God knows how many cases of dove, duck, and turkey loads it is starting to get a tad loose.

Love the 870. It's the JMB 1911 of shotguns.
