I am trying to find out everyone's thoughts on Stag arms. Anyone have any experience with them. Are they worth a count? The reason I am asking is because I have a chance to get a really good deal on an AR15, but it is Stag Arms. I do not know much about them. Right now it is between the one by Stag Arms and a pre-ban Colt AR of the same quality. However, the Colt does not have as many goodies for the money.

The parent Company of Stag makes parts for other AR manufacturers. IMHO Stag is the best, "Bang-for-the-Buck" AR you can get. I have 2 and they are bothgreat rifles.

I'm no connoisseur or anything, but my first (so far only) AR is a Stag. No problems with it. FWIW, it came from a guy who was very highly recommended to me over at another board - and AFAIK he deals in Stags exclusively.

Can't really tell for sure unless I know what "goodies" the Colt is lacking...and anyway we may not prefer the same goodies anyway! ;) But I've yet to hear anything negative about Stag.

IIRW, it is cmt or cmmg , the origional partent company of stag, that makes tons of ar parts, that a lot of other companies use.

Been very happy with my Stag15-type2. Very accurate, zero malfuctions. The gas key screws, however are insufficiently staked from the factory, if you get one have a gunsmith re-stake them.

I have had a Stag for about 6 months and only thing I've done to it is put a heavier buffer and upgrades the internals of the extractor. I love it and the only reason I did the upgrades is that I happen onto some military surplus that wouldn't extract.

If you're wanting it to be a defensive rifle, the twist rate of the stag barrels might not be a good choice for the rounds you'd probably want to use. As the above poster said the gas key screws need to be staked properly to improve reliability. Other than that I think they're a pretty solid choice.

It is CMT.

Yup. Sadly, this problem is not just limited to Stag. However, your average gun owner should be able to re-stake them himself, without the expense of a gunsmith.

Most Stags use a 1/9 twist, which should handle most stuff in the 50-70gr range. Some folks go into the mid-70s with 1/9 barrels with mixed results, but that's generally the domain of 1/8 and 1/7 barrels.

That being said, there's plenty of quality ammo in the 50-70gr range, especially for a "defensive" carbine. Varmint hunters and target shooters may be better served with other barrels, depending on their specific needs.

You don't need a gunsmith to stake you carrier keys. You can do it yourself. It's a 5 minute job.

And 5$ :)

Hammer and Center Punch. Just 'move' a little metal. Don't need to make pockets deep enough to collect drinking water in.
An automatic center punch also does a fine job.

I have a stag, extremely high quality. I hold it in higher regards than most other AR manufacturers that I wont mention here.

Quality aside, STAG is NOT the only company that makes a left-handed AR, much as they like to claim they are.
DPMS has for quite a while & I've shot one. :)
