Ok guys I would like to start a club about the rifles and other equipment one would use to accurately shoot at a mile, with lot's and lot's of pictures please. So if you have shot at a mile I would love to see your setup and hear about your shooting.

I'll start by saying I haven't yet had the opportunity to shot at a mile but I am looking at savages 338 laupua rifles as a starting point.

Have fun

Define "accurately".

My .338 LM beast (one just like it anyway) was used to dispatch a couple of Taliban in Afghanistan in 2009 by CoH Craig Harrison. Those shots were ranged at 2,707 yards which is over 1.5 miles! So I have the gear and can shoot out to 1,300 yards at my place but would need to go to a friend's ranch to try for one mile. I'm definitely interested though. However, the problem I might have is that my handload consisting of a 250gr Lapua Scenar with a MV around 2,800 fps would be transonic at around 1,620 yards. I might need to work up a different load.

EDIT: I just checked the AB app on my phone and at 4,500 feet elevation where my friend has a few thousand acres the bullet would go transconic at 1,700 yards so it might work. We'll see.

MCMXI to me Accurately means you are shooting at a target and are actively trying to hit said target not " well we were shooting at that far ridge with an sks that's a mile right Clem":banghead: trying to place a good shot on a target at one mile 1,760 yards

So a full sized IDPA/IPSC steel target would be a good test since it's close to 1 moa in width at 1,760 yards.

i most likely could not afford shooting at that range, the rifle, maybe, the ammo? heck no

I think at least as much discussion about your shooting range/location as equipment is needed, as a mile of free reign is a pretty rare commodity, anymore.

...and who's to say an SKS can't be shot accurately a mile away? :p

I am a member of a range where I can shoot to 1250 yards. I have not shot at that distance yet, but at 1000 yards I have been doing good and can consistently hit a 10" plate at 1000. In the next year or so my range plans to extend to a mile.

I'm shooting a custom rifle off of a Rem 700 in 300WM. It was built by Tooter Meredith from Meredith Rifles here in Alabama. I would put his rifles up against anybody elses

I have hit E sillouetes (19 x 40) with the following:

1, Surgeon 338 Lapua
2. MK 13 (300 win mag)
3. M24 (308 win)
4. Larue OBR (308 win)

It can be done.

Most .308 Win rounds will go transonic around 1,200 yards so I imagine it's not easy to hit an E silhouette at 1,760 yards. What was the hit percentage? 1% maybe.

My KD range here at the farm is marked out to 1,000 meters and I can take it out to a full 2,000 meters but I haven't had the hardware (yet) to justify marking it out that far. Last summer I was waiting on my train to get called and stopped at the local fun store, checked out a Sako TRG-42 in .338 Lapua. I thought about getting it but then checking out the price of ammo, I decided against it. $5 per round is pretty steep and if you are going to get any information to get even a half-assed dope book, it's going to be extremely expensive! Instead I got a Remington 700LR in .300 Win Mag. I still have to get a set of Badger rings, mount and optics but that's on the back burner right now. Not sure how it will perform at 1 mile but I think 1200 or maybe even 1500 meters (well, that might be optimistic for a .300) ought to be doable.

would be fun, but way too expensive for me. i've taken a few pokes that far but nothing consistent for sure

The Creedmoor matches were shot at up to 1000 yards with the US using Remington Rolling Blocks and Sharps. First match was held in 1874, US vs. Ireland, with a US win by one point. Ireland was using muzzle loaders.

This article details a shot with a Sharps .50 hitting an Indian on horseback at 9/10's mile, and more info on the first Creedmoor match: http://www.dmatney.com/files/1874_Creedmore_Match.pdf

A few years back I was with Mad Ogre and Zach at Buckskin Hills and we were hucking .308 from my FNAR out a mile+ (Crusader Joe might have been there too, but my memory sucks).

It was fun and we were getting hits, but I am not going to pretend that it was in any way accurate or repeatable. :)

I've pulled the triggers for guns shooting at targets over 4 miles away. Got hits, too. Would they count?

There are several videos of people shooting 1 mile with a .308 and hitting the target. Here's one

I'd like to try it, but like most, finding a safe place to shoot is the first problem. The second for me is I'd need to drop some serious coin on a good spotting scope.

mcmxi- the standard we placed on our selves was 1 hit with no more than 3 rounds. No one got a 1st round hit, took most of us all 3 rounds. A few hit on the 2nd and 3rd.

. . . ... .. . can consistently hit a 10" plate at 1000
That's really good. Few long range benchrest rifles can do that.

Whose barrel?

How many shots and from what position?

I shoot one mile high, but I guess it's distance that counts.

I did hit the White Buffalo at Whittington Center.

Tykempster 338 laupua improved what kind of gains are you getting over 338 laupua and some details about the rifle would be nice and would I be wrong in assuming you still work for GA precsion?

Bart B. The barrel is a Bartlein 1/10 twist. And let me explain when I say consistently. I mean once I get my dope dialed in for the weather on that day. I get hits on a 10" plate more times than I miss I do take my time and not let the barrel get very hot. I shoot in 3-5 shot strings.

I shoot exclusively prone with a bipod and a rear squeeze bag. The last time that I shot at that distance I put together a 5 shot string that measured 5 and 3/4 inches. I couldn't believe it myself, but the weather was absolutely perfect, little to no mirage, no wind to speak of, and the sun was behind me. My wife and shooting partner witnessed the shots on the target camera and were speechless. I was too I'm sure it was a once in a lifetime grouping and I'll never shoot that well again, I can tell you that I hit the 10" steel plate more than 50% of the time.

300 Win Mag
208gr Amax 2748fps ES 11 SD 5 over 10 shots

I haven't shot a mile, but a less expensive way to get there is some variation of either a 300 WM or 7mm Magnum and heavy, high BC bullets. They'll stay supersonic to a mile and not cost $5 per shot.
