THR Saved My Life

THR

Well...Through THR and another forum, I've made a few good friends who will likely be friends for a long time. I've been able to save'em a little money and a lot of grief, and they bring my dogs treats when they come to visit. Some even come just to visit and shoot the bull...and that's a plus. I'd like to think that...at maybe some dreaded and fearful point that we all pray never comes...that the tuning I've done on their pistols will be instrumental in saving a life.

I'm learning, and I'm learning...

It is nice to post a question or comment, with the comfort that it won't be met with attitude..

Thanks everyone, BSR

Although much of what I have learned here help direct my initial handgun purchase and the restoration of a few neglected inexpensive long guns in the family heirloom collection, the best contributions from this forum to me are all the things that are NOT hardware related in the areas of self and home defense. Mindset, awareness, avoidance, preparation, reponsibilities, and consequences are just a few. Most are things I would have never thought about on my own or been exposed to by others in such a short time. I still have much to learn. Many thanks.

I have also learned alot here

THR has helped me
1. get more involved in 2d Amendment advocacy
2. get into reloading- with the help of members of the board.
3. given me good advice on what guns to buy- saved me from buying some crap/ let me know the pros and cons of various guns I have purchased.
4. I have also purchased a nice revolver off this board.

THR is entirely responsible for making me a supporter of the RKBA, and my voting and activism is based on that too.

Also helped a ton with reloading. :)

THR has taught me that keeping the ******* button as my backup weapon in an argument or discussion is usually better than using it as my primary weapon.

I used to be a truck driver, and once I heard a senior driver say "The first day that I don't learn something, no matter how small, that's the day I get out of that cab for the last time."

THR has done that for me. Every day I log on, I learn something new, even if it's just one of those things that make you say hmmmmmm.

A few of the major things I've learned while here;
If dry firing or using a snap-cap, be conscious of upper or lower levels of the house.
Clarity of the 4 rules. I used the actions (mostly) but didn't have the words.
CCW is a responsibility, not an ego boost as I've witnessed with some CCW'ers.
But the most important thing; There are still people around with respect, honesty, integrity, values, and concern for their fellow man. That is something I'd become quite disillusioned about in working at a high school.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Many thanks to my friend Thefumegator (Wes) for the referral to THR.

I firmly believe that THR did save my life by teaching me the proper way to sex a goose and also I learned how to pwn one by flapping my arms and shouting "bring it on! Bring it on!"

Actually, I grew up in a fairly gun-phobic home. Well, I had a ton of toy guns, but no real ones were allowed around me, so I never learned "hands on" about firearms. I had one book that I still own that my grandfather gave me when I was ten which had exploded schematics of revos and semis, talked about hunting -- explained it all really. I will soon give that book to my daughter. So I guess from early on I learned by reading and I continue to do so, but with teh interweb mainly.

The most important thing I've learned is that I'm not alone in my beliefs and that there is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrased about. I've come away from THR again and again with a sense of community and support and I've learned things -- some things in excruciating detail -- that I may never have even considered until I ran across a thread.

EDITED TO ADD:

Yay! My 100th post!

Well, I'm self-taught as far as pistols are concerned. Reading gunboards like these made sure I followed the four rules, was able to check the gun for safe/unsafe function, and use the thing with a bit of intelligence as to proper grip/sight picture.

Load one round into the magazine. Rack slide. Point and click. Then load a few more rounds. Check the gun for cracks, see if the brass is split, etc.

Then I got a used DA auto. I knew how to check to see if the safety was working, to see if the decocker was functional, etc. Again, check to see if brass splits, if the gun 'doubles', and other stuff.

This site is a teriffic place to check if a gun is decent, if it's overpriced, etc. Are the reviews of real people on this board good? What are the complaints? What's the going rate?

The most valuable thing I learned on THR is the search function. Except for current laws and stuff, most topics have already been covered. Altough, it is fun to ask what if, what should, what would you, which is, and all those fun, lenghty questions with lots of opinions.

I have been shooting a variety of firearms for many purposes over many years. I have still learned new things every time I come here. I especially enjoy the cordial tone of almost every poster here. There are a lot of nuts "out there" and I was really losing any enjoyment of visiting most forums.

As a new shooter I had some great questions like:
- How do I do an 8+1 on my 1911? Do I load the +1 though the ejection port?
- Is there a .45 ACP round that will take out a bear? (found .45-08)
- Why do you need more than one gun? (just bought my second 1911, a kimber warrior)
- Firearm transportation and airports
- Whats the best gun for backpacking?

..and of course I have posted a few THR censorship threads for unfair moderation on good topics! I post "green" it gets locked, someone else posts "red", the mod's fav color is red, so its ok! ;)

Good to see THR is still paving the way to sucessful gun ownership.

Before this great place was born the majority of us old heads hung out at TFL.

I was raised at TFL and make THR my home because its the best of the gun forums on the web.

Yea, I've learned alot and met good friends here as well. Guess that's why I like this place so much.

THR is my second most favorite gun forum. My first is GlockTalk/Reloading. That forum is so funny and good natured I visit it every night just so I go to bed chuckling. It is also a wealth of reloading info.

But THR has more gun info. Discourse is for the most part very helpful and civil. I've heard of problems with women having a hard time here, but I've never seen it.

I visit the forum every day and always learn something. Thanks guize.

I could use some help about the search feature, how do I search by caliber only or model number only??

Hearing Loss

I'll dig around.

Basically, though, a quick search for "hearing loss" will bring a lot of material.

I would also suggest searching (advanced) for anything written by hso with "hearing" or "hearing loss" (also "ear protection" and "hearing protection").

I'll update later if I find the one(s) I'm thinking of.

When I first joined THR, I didn't mind compromising the Second Amendment. I am now a Second Amendment purist.

DITTO,

I got a shotgun at 11, and I was hooked.

I was raised in an almost anti-gun family. I was brainwashed into thinking that guns are bad, and guns kill. I was ashamed, and tried to hide from people that I shoot often, and own many guns. People in school thought I was a killer just because I had guns...They probably still think that.

From this forum, I learned how politically and morally wrong the anti-gun community is. I have solid facts and arguements to defuse most anti-gun arguements.....Some people have their head so far up their A$$, that they can't even here you.:scrutiny:

But....... Now I dont hide my hobby. I am proud to be a gun owner, and a STRONG supporter of the 2nd ammendment.

Thanks THR:)

THR has not saved my life but it has helped re-introduce me to the world of fire-arms.

I grew up in a big time ANTI-gun home. My father died when i was 6 months old. I assume he was a sportsman as all his brothers were, all my cousins were from sportsman families. My Mom (God bless her) was and still is very much against guns. Probably why I have this deep seated love for them, lol.

I remember the day JFK was killed. I was walking through the house with a cap pistol I had gotten somewhere and had it taken away from me by a crying hysterical mother. I was 5 years old and pretty much knew from there on out guns were a big no-no in our home. Then came Bobby and MLK. Whenever a subject touching on guns came up the "anti" sentiments came out.

I had bought a Model 60 when I was 19 and remember sneaking it in the house in a golf bag, mom never knew about it. I did not shoot much only once in a blue moon when friends with .22's would want to go shooting out in the country. I lived in fear someone at home would look in that golf bag and see that rifle.

I recently became interested in fire-arms again, do not really know what triggered it this time but the bug has bitten hard. Must be the recent change of jobs and a little more disposable cash.

THR has helped me with everything you all have mentioned previously. The 4 rules of shooting, gun storage, cleaning. You name it, if it is abotu fire-arms I learned it here.

Thanks THR, and I still have and shoot the Model 60 too!

PS: I forgot about Zombies. never forget Zombies

Not a life saver but definately a life changer The High Road help me see whats going on around the country and has helped in many ways.
I learned about the gun laws in the states that were on the table to move into from this site and packing.org we ended up in Oregon and are just getting to know the state and area.
Always nice to see what other people are building or collecting or tinkering with, allows me to see what works and what does not thus saving me money and time and time is life.
A great place to see and learn from like minded people who share many of the same interests and hobbies.
Gun safety lessons such as stressing hearing protection make me more aware of not losing my hearing.
Four rules of gun safety can't be stressed enough as all it takes is one careless moment to ruin a life.
The Higher Roaders are well above average and this forum allows many of the best ideas to come to the forefront.
Thanks to all who have contributed its a great place to be.:)

Thanks to THR, me and my Assault Wheelbarrow are the envy of everyone in my neighborhood.
(joke, joke, joke)

Actually the gun advice I've gotten here has been immensely valuable to me. I'm the kind of guy who can't just walk into a gun shop and ask questions - partially because I feel like if I'm not ready to buy I'm just wasting the clerk's time - and partially because so many gun shop clerks are clueless, pushing a particular product, or just arrogant. My last 4 or 5 firearms purchases were all guided by info I learned here on THR, and I've been a hell of a lot better off because of it.

I've also gotten a lot more involved with local NRA activities due to the influence of this forum, and even though I'm not really a 'joiner', I've found myself enjoying that aspect of my hobby a lot.

I love this forum !!!

I basically now stick to only 2 websites, this one and " Youtube ".
I like to watch and listen to the old rock bands from the 70's on Youtube.
I don't care for the silly personal narcistic homemade videos of egocentric boring people.

But this site is SO interesting, that i go through withdrawl-symptoms if i fail to log-on daily.
I've learned alot during the past 5 weeks since i discovered this site.
I do feel kindred-spirit here with all of you who have an intrest, and a great enthusiasim for guns also.:)

A wiseman once said, " a gun truly isn't really a gun, untill it is fired ",and what great wisdom there is in that phrase.

I feel that shooting is a gentleman's sport, instead of a " redneck caveman " sport.By that i mean that we are not dumb, violent people who see and use guns as weapons-of-mass-destruction.Now-mind-you,i see nothing wrong with discussing caliber ballistics in reference to being good man-stoppers.I appreciate all the advice about trigger-finger placement on a loaded pistol.I also found out that it is better to wait for an intruder to come to you, instead of you going to him in an in-home-break-in.:uhoh:
We all have families and loved-ones that we wish to protect. And B.T.W.,i would GLADLY spend time and pay any fine in jail for shooting an intruder that tried to harm my family during a break-in.Sacraficeing means just as the word implies; " I sacrafice myself, for the good of others ".

Anyway,i appreciate each and everyone of you.:)
I don't have any friends to talk to because i work 6 days a week by myself with no co-workers.So this is kind of an outlet for me.

And one more thing," Beauty is well oiled Sig P220ST loaded with Hornady .45 230 gn.+P TAP JH Bullets within easy reach " :D :D :D

I am the sigdude

I was always into guns, but I had come to a point in my life where there wasn't many pro-gun people around me and I missed talking guns. And then I found The Site! (You know, the only site:D ) Now, thanks to The High Road, I get to talk guns whenever I want. Terrific people, some rather spectacular photos, outstanding conversation. Ask for opinions, you got em. Talk to a gunsmith, it's all here. I can't for the life of me remember how I found it, but somehow I found it on my own. I've since led several people here, though, and usually resulting in the same remark: "That's exactly what I was looking for!"

I'm another one who had sort of lost interest in shooting and guns when I got into bass fishing. When my wife and I decided to get our CHP's I started looking around the internet for advice, and found a number of "gun boards" that I posted on. Gradually they've been whittled down to two or three, with "The High Road" being my favorite I guess. (To bad, y'all are stuck with me.)

And I learned a LOT about Zombies. I'M READY!!! :what:
