I just got my 18" 870 barrel. It has an IC fixed choke in it now. I'm thinking about having RemChokes installed in it. This is my working and home gun, is there a down side to doing this. I would like the versatility of shooting birdshoot, slugs and buck from this. Thanks

Seems to be a lot of this going around. People wanting 18.5" changeable choked barrels, I mean.

Remington and Mossberg, are you paying attention?

In my book, there is no down side at all to having a short, changeable choke barrel.

I would have the forcing cone lengthened to 4" at the same time. Mike Orlen can do both for about $95 total including return shipping. That's a deal. You will have to buy your own choke tubes.

At HD ranges I realy don't see much of a need to be concerned over choke, and it should shoot anything through it OK without any choke at all . Short barrels are at least sometimes fixed choked to IC .

If you also use it for other uses then perhaps it pays.

The more I hear about swapping chokes on a 18 or 20" barrel the more I like the idea.

It still comes down to bore dia. and wall thickness.
Remington has gone to a big bore for the shorter fixed choke barrels.
The new police barrels have the wall thickness but the bore dia. is to large.

I've never bothered to get choke tubes installed into a barrel that was ImpCyl from the factory- don't see any need to do it. Do some experimenting with ammo and I'd bet you can get whatever pattern size you want when you find the load that barrel likes. Given what the new Federal LE127 00 loads with FliteControl wads will do, I'm not even going to bother having tubes put in the current CYL bore barrel I'm working on (3" patterns at 25 yards). Sights, yes- but no choke tubes.

I have found that the one internal barrel modification that seems to produce the most uniform improvement in buckshot patterns in many cases is having forcing cones lengthened and polished.

For HD, I agree that cylinder bore can't really be improved on. For civil emergencies, however, I think a modified choke can be very useful since one may need to take a few longer shots than inside-the-home distance.

I can also take that short barrel and put a full choke in for upland game, or an X-full for turkey.

It just adds greatly to the versatility.

A modified choke in most cases will greatly improve your patterns with many different buckshot loads and brands, even cheap buckshot. Having choke tubes gives you "many options" that I find appealing. You can spend your money on high over priced buckshot like Federal Flite Control to get the pattern you want or you can put the money towards having choke tubes installed.

For different patterns in my 18.5" Nova, I simply switch loads. That way, I can always shoot slugs with absolutely no worry as to which choke is installed. Also, there's no tube to (possibly) fly down range or get stuck/lost. YMMV
