Have asked myself the same thing. I am leaning towards the CBOB. My other option is to piece together a Bob Serva puzzle.....

I voted other.

My Commander sized choices would be the Colt Commander (blued model 04691) followed by a S&W scandium framed Commander sized pistol, either PD or Gunsite.

I'm sure the CBOB is a nice pistol. There seems to be a lot of fans out there, but I like the "bobbed" frame about as much as I like finger grooved grips on a 1911, not very much.

On the XSE Colt, I don't have a need for the ambi thumb safety (I'm a righty) and I don't care for the "duckbill" grip safety. The standard Colt Commander (04691) has the nice "teardrop" single side thumb safety and my favorite grip safety (both like my 1990 Combat Elite).

I like the Commander size as a 4.25" barrel with a bushing which eliminates the Kimber and Springfield.

The S&W's are 4.25" barreled and have a bushing. Both are lightweight models which would be nice. The Gunsite has the short GI guide rod which I prefer, while the PD has the full length rod, but that can be easily changed out. I'm not too concerned about the external extractor since S&W seems to have done a good job with it. I'm also not too concerned with S&W's firing pin safety since the design seems to be more robust than the Colt Series 80 design (though different) and I've not had any problem with that system.

Voted CBOB, as I just bought one a few weeks ago.

I thought the bob-tail treatment looked funny, until I held one. I bought it immediately.

the ONLY complaint I have about DW guns is that they are so friggin tightly machined, they are a bitch to break down and put back together.

to the guy that complained about not liking the bobtail,...I guess you haven't held one is all I can figure.

My thoughts Exactly, and pretty much the same reasons. I spent about 18 months/2 years picking out a commander to compliment my full-size ones and replace the custom Caspian .40 Commander I had for years and was disillusioned with. Lots of experimentation, testing, thinking, and shopping led me to the Colt 1991 Commander, the 04691. Perfect carry gun out of the box and well built. All the features you need, none you don't (I wanted a carry gun, not a range or safe queen).

Following Colt, S&W is my next highest ranked major maker of 1911 models right now.

I had been pretty set on the CBOB or the Raptor, but I am seriously looking at the S&W now. I can get the one with the Crimson trace grips now but I dont really want the grip.

I have the Raptor Ultra Carry and will not sell it. The only thing I would do different is make it in 10mm.

And some day I'm gonna contact Fusion and get a kit to make one.

S.A. is my choice ...

I had a Kimber Covert with a 4" inch bbl for a while it was picky about the mags and ammo and had to send it back for inspection and they did nada :banghead: it had machined marks on the inside of the barrel where the lugs are just in front of the chamber ?? I have never seen any other barrel except Kimbers that show those marks.
I dont have a 4 inch barreled S.A. presently but a friend has a Loaded Champion Lightweight, I have seen him plow thru 300-400 rounds in a couple of hours it feeds anything ... my 2cents. I had a S&W 1911Sc which was a good gun but I couldn't get past the external extractor.
I prefer the 5 inch bbl if the truth be told.

Bought the 1991 Commander for a custom project; it was so nice out of the box I almost didn't go forward with the project. It was very accurate, had a nice trigger and was reliable. My only complaint with it was the plastic MSH; nothing I can point to in terms of functionality, just don't care for plastic on my guns. Kinda like the way I feel about the bobtail; works great, feels OK in my hand, people love them and has a real place for folks that carry concealed, but I do not like them for no other reason than looks.

By the way, received the Commander back after 18 months; very nice pistol and well worth the wait.

1911forum.com reports that Dan Wesson will make fewer CBOBs next year and will be selling them in California only. They will make commander sized bobtailed guns but the CBOB will, supposedly, be a California only gun. Price increase incoming as well. Get 'em while they're hot...I got mine!

My S&W SC Commander, was a great shooter. Only sold it because my 3" Kimber was more comfortable.

I go a bit more toward simplicity. I vote for the Colt Commander, the base model not the XSE. I don't care for ambi safeties and all the bells and whistles.

Although some extras are nice, I don't see the benefit of others. I also think the tighter the tolerance the more likely you are to run into FTF, FTE issues. Simple is better, especially since, for me, its primary purpose is SD.

I wish I never sold mine. One day I will own another:

As a southpaw, all but the CBOB from Dan Wesson is a top choice. Dan Wesson might be awesome, but I've only seen two options in their catalog that's just for me.

(10mm Hunter... shudder and drool)

The XSE is neat, but I like the Champion and the Pro Raptor.

Honestly, I'd go with the Pro Raptor, but my real love in the Kimber catalog is the Pro CDP II.
