Anyone try this downward concept with a WSM. I know Remington now makes a 30 caliber that equates the 30-06, 300winmag, and their Ultramag that is the most powerful 30 caliber round out there. They offer 3 levels of power in the same case.

I'm looking for the ability to slow down my 300WSM to 30-06 levels. I'm not going to push it up, but loading down is something I'd like to talk about with those that have tried.

All that I've read seems to mean lost accuracy.

I am a little confused with your statement:
They offer 3 levels of power in the same case.
Could you clarify that a little please.

If you are referring to the 300WSM, at its max it does not better the 300WinMag in velocity, and is far short of the 300 RUM.

The trouble with downloading larger capacity cases is that accuracy generally suffers. With the slower powders, loaded near or at max, you generally will get better accuracy.

If you want to load the 300WSM to 30-06 level, you can simply load a 165 gr bullet. The difference between a maxed out 30-06 and a nearly maxed out 300WSM is 100 FPS at most. Accuracy loads in each would probably be short of max.

The next lowest loading would be the 308 Win., using a 155 gr bullet, which can achieve over 2900fps at max. The 300WSM will get about 150 fps more at max. Again, accuracy loads in each would probably be short of max.

You could use Hodgdon's youth loads.

http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/Youth Loads.pdf

165gr Bullet data according to Hodgdon

30-06--2938fps

300WSM--3175fps

300WM--3142fps

According to Ramshot

30-06--2880fps

300WSM--3172fps

300WM--3162fps

It appears to me that the 300WSM beats the 30-06 by as much as 290fps and tops the WM by a nose. With this data, dropping your 300WSM down to 30-06 levels(velocity) may indeed get you the recoil reduction you seek.

i've loaded the 300 wsm from full-power loads all the way down to subsonic loads.

i like h-4895 for running anywhere from 30-30 level up to 308 win level. rl-19 for full power levels, and unique to go subsonic.

accuracy w/ the subsonic loads is tough, but once i get into the h-4895 loads accuracy is just as good as anything else.

Sorry, little fuzzy on the new 30 cal Rem ultra mag or whatever they call it. It is nice to see the WSM can be downloaded and perform well. I'm going to try this for deer hunting next year. I'll look into youth loads for a start and h-4895. That broad mix of speeds should be fun to develop. I have oodles of 165 grainers to play with.

Dakotasin, would you mind sharing a recipe and speed data if you have it?
