I live in Colorado Springs so their laws would prevail.

I am considering purchasing OC spray for a intermediate self defense tool and have three questions regarding purchase and possession in Co Springs

1. Must I have some type of certificate stating that I have been trained in the use of OC spray ( This question is in relation to purchasing it from a security/ police supply house)

2. Where does one purchase OC spray?

3. If I choose to purchase "Bear Spray" from a sporting goods store ( I assume REI carries it) can I legally use that spray on a human or is it too potent?
3A. If I should choose to purchase OC spray that is rated for humans is that going to be potent enough for a bear? ( In Colorado we officially only have Black Bears)

Thank you all in advance for your answers

I can purchase OC spray and the stronger bear spray at my local gun shop. And I think Dog the bounty hunter carries bear spray, if I'm correct. So i guess it's legal in Hawaii, or for recovery agents.

Sure,

1. You do not need any sort of permit, certification, or other document to legally carry pepper spray in Colorado. In fact I don't think their is even an age limit because according to several law enforcement people from CO, they don't consider it legally as a "weapon."

2. Gun shops generally have the higher quality brands, which I would recommend. Generic sprays are sold at Target, Walmart, and most sporting goods stores (look in Jogging). The best brands are Fox Labs, DefTech, and Sabre. Ordering online is usually how to get the exact kind you want, for example if you want a pepper-foam (for indoors) or a stream.

3. In US (as opposed to Canadian) law there usually isn't a distinction between Bear Spray and human-intended pepper spray. There is nothing in law that would make it illegal per se to use it in this way, but it may be impractical. "Bear Spray" isn't even a well-defined industry term, so it would depend what a given spray can actually contains. Some are the exact same stuff as regular spray, just in a bigger can or different labels. Even regular sprays vary quite a bit. Some have a 10% solution at 2,000,000 Scovilles, others have 2% solution at 5,300,000 Scovilles (The latter is generally better).

Thank you very much for your answers

I went with Fox labs from L&S 4 oz spray and case 53.65$
