The FAL is a lot easier to clean than the CETME. I fired both yesterday and found the FAL had les recoil and better groups

1 more vote for the Ruger No.1, probably because I just got one on 30-06 for hunting this fall. It has to be one of the handsomest rifles I've ever seen. It belonged to my Dad, who doesn't hunt, so he gave it to me so that it would live it's intended life. Thank you, Dad! :D

Dion;

I voted 'other'. Not a specific other, but why limit yourself to the Savage or a mil-surp for a bolt gun? Cruise the used racks of as many gun emporiums as are reasonably close to you. Therein it's highly probable that you'll find one that speaks to you. Be it a Remington 700 in 7mm mag, or a Tikka Whitetail Hunter in 6.5 X 55 or anything else you might find. Who knows, there are absolute gems out there.

Well, I think I've come to a decision. (Rare, I know.) :uhoh:

I'm going to go with the Savage.

Most likely, I'll start off with a stock 10FP-LE1, as I have a thing for short(er)-barreled scoped bolt-actions. $601.00

Next, I'll top it off with this. I'll most likely go with the NATO reticle, but might go with the Dragunov just to be weird. :p $349.95

Add a Turner Black AWS sling. $49.95 Bipod, dedicated case, and other goodies come later.
Total: $1109.73 including local tax and transfer.

Reason I decided not to go with the SA M1A Scout is that after renting the M1A again at the local in-town range, I decided that an autoloading .308 wouldn't be the best thing for me at this time. I'd rather have a rifle that makes me think between shots as I re-acquire the target.

I decided against the Ruger because I want a repeater... when I hit the lottery, I'll get one in .458 Lott for the full experience. :D

Thanks for all the input! :)

You couldn't make any better choices! Outstanding! I would also recommend picking up The Art of the Rifle by Jeff Cooper.

finally snapped a pic of my DPMS AP4 .308 16" barrel. Sorry for the poor quality, I've got a new digi camera coming this week, mine is 5 years old. I'll try it out this saturday at 200 yards with the new Barska 3-12x50mm scope.

Outstanding - I like your choices - except I'd want a higher power scope (like a 2-7, 3-9, or 4-12). You'll be happy with that rig, however, to be sure! Did you rent the M14-type at H&H? If so, do you remember which employee there helped you? I'm friends with most of them.

good decision. ;)

if you look around, you should be able to get rifle for under $500. I've seen them with the Choate stock for under $600.

Wow, a thousand bucks. Alot of cash. You stated that some other rifles were out because of lack of quality vs. cost and ammo price. What do you feel is the quality vs. cost equation in a K-31 around a $100? Sure the ammo is a little pricey, but it's "match grade". How much is good quality ammo going to cost you to shoot in that Savage? You can get a K-31 and a couple of cases of ammo for half that amount of money. The big plus is you would do some actual shooting! Your probably young and your mind is made up, so the best of luck to you and your new firearm aquisition!

Nice choice!

Wish you hadn't posted that scope though, that looks like something I might have to throw some money at... :banghead:

Have fun with it!

I have ther same sentiments as JBWELD above. I'm a little late to the party, but here is what I would have reccommended as a cheap rifle.

A K-31: $100
Clamp on scope mount: $100
Leupold Vari-XI scope: $200
1440 rounds of 7.5x55 swiss GP-11: $510

The .308 may be cheaper to plink with with surplus ammo, but to get your rifle to shoot as well as or better than the K-31/GP-11 combination, you will need to buy .308 ammo that is much more expensive than gp-11.

i voted for the m1a but that's assuming you don't have to worry about money. i suggest buy a mosin nagant, preferably the carbine, then get an m1a when you can afford it. remember, you'll want magazines, ammo, maybe a scope. i finally talked myself into the m1a so i bought a few thousand rounds, a scope mount, a sheppard scope and ten mags so when i get home i HAVE to buy one. :D

In this Order:
-M1a if you can afford it.
-Then the G-3 clone.
-Then the Savage
-Then the AR-10

Here is my two centavos worth try the Savage rifle but get it in the 7mm Rem mag. Or in the 300 Win mag.
I have one each of them and the reputation they have for out of the box accuracy is well deserved also between the two of them there is nothing in the United States or anywhere else I can not kill With the exception of elephant sized game.
I also have a nagant for plinking and hog killing and with hand loads it's accuracy is much improved.

Follow your bliss
