Tioga County, NY CCW?

Anyone living in Tioga County, NY care to share how difficult it is to get a carry permit? I am probably going to have to move to NY state and work in Ithaca. I hear Tompkins county is bad for CCW, but what about Tioga or even Chemung? Any feedback is appreciated.

In NY you have to be resident for a year before you can even apply. Sorry don't know about that county attitude about CCW

Monroe county requires 6 months of residency. They are essentially Shall Issue. Unfortunately Monroe county is a good drive from Ithaca, between an 1.5 to 2 hours. Good luck!

Is that for a permit even to own a handgun? If that is the case then that means you cannot even participate in any shooting sports for a year. That would be a deal breaker.

I am going to call some offices in Tioga and Chemung County tomorrow and see if I can get any info for them.

Its true in Oneida county at least. In NY each county had a license "officer", usually a judge, and they can set almost any rules they like. We use to have a judge here that beleived in the 2nd amendment and would issue ccw no problem. We now have a judge who wants you to give him a "good" reason to give you a ccw, otherwise you get a permit with restrictions. Best I can tell every judge is different.

Yes that is even to own a gun. My friends target and hunting permit took him about 6 months just to get (Genesee county). He had lived in the county all of his life and went to church with the judge.

I'm not sure about any length of time required for residency. Not seeing anything laid out in the state laws here. You should call your County Clerk's office, or the County Police and ask them.

The licensing law only requires residency. There is no minimum time defined in law.

Most agencies will regard 6 months of time spent in New York State as proof of residency. However, since your drivers license must be from the state you reside in, as soon as you transfer your drivers license you can apply.

Personally, I waited 6 months before applying. 9 months later I had my license.

You also need to list references on the permit application, and those references have to live in the same county that you are applying in. So that could be a problem.

Another thing to consider is that you do have a choice to apply for the permit for the county you reside in, or in the county that you are employed in. So as long as you work in a gun-friendly county you might still get your permit faster than the county you'd live in.

Don't confuse New York State with New York City. While the state still has too many gun laws, most upstate counties are quite gun-friendly. But as with all governments, some have more red-tape than others. Monroe county takes 6 months to a year to process an application, while Wayne (right next to Monroe) got me my permit in 3 months.

When I send in the paperwork to add a gun to my permit, I usually have it back in a week, and that counts mailing it there and back. Not perfect, but I guess I can't ask for much better.

Look into Cortland and Cayuga Counties. Both are "gun-friendly" as far as any place in NYS can be considered so.

Took only 3 months to get a Cayuga CCW and they are shall-issue without restrictions.

Steuben cty

I live in Steuben cty and have an unrestricted carry permit. Steuben is one of the 'gun friendly' counties. I have friends that say Chemung and Tioga are both 'unfriendly'. The Steuben cty pistol clerk says that restrictions on permits in this county are rare. A guy I work with got his permit in Chemung and has 'target use only' restrictions. When he moved to Steuben cty he got the permit ammended to remove the restrictions.

Well for the moment I will not be relocating anywhere. The deal isn't going to happen. They won't budge any further after 3 weeks of back and forth and it is just not economically feasible for me to move unless the deal was sweeter.
