I just got this from the NRA-ILA and confirmed that DOS is requesting this information from instructors.

Please Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard!
The Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) is currently sending letters to all firearms instructors requiring them to complete and return a copy of a Handgun Safety School Class Roster within 24 hours of the completion of a handgun permit certification class, “effective immediately.”

This new roster requires a student to provide information concerning the name of the firearm owner, the name of the student using the firearm, as well as the make, model, and serial number of firearms used. Currently, there are no statutes that authorize the TDOS to collect or require this information. Simply put, this is a backdoor, de facto gun registration scheme! Remember, registration is the first step to potential firearms confiscations.

It is imperative that Tennessee’s law abiding gun owners stand-up and voice their opposition to this gun registration plot. Please contact the Tennessee Department of Safety and your State Legislators TODAY and respectfully let them know that you oppose the need and use of these rosters. The Tennessee Department of Safety can be reached by phone at (615) 253-5221 or toll-free at 866-849-3548. To find contact information for your State Legislators, please click here.

THR has many TN residents and we should phone, email and write our elected officials and the DOS ((615) 253-5221 or toll-free at 866-849-3548) asking why this information has suddenly been requested after years of the permit classes and why the firearms information is needed years after the permit system did away with firearms specific information requirements and how the can be relevant since many people use rental guns from the range they test at to meet the practical shooting skills component of the test and who made the decision to make these changes.

As always, be polite, but be emphatic that such information isn't required by statute, is useless and has no reason for the state to inquire about.

An update on this issue. TDOS has rescinded the requirement for gun info on the rosters.

TDOS STATEMENT ON HANDGUN SAFETY SCHOOLS

NASHVILLE --- This week the Department of Safety mailed new Handgun Safety School Class Roster forms to all 164 Handgun Safety Schools across the state.

The new forms inadvertently included three sections that requested the make of the gun, handgun serial number, and whether the school or student owned the handgun. This should not have been done and the sections were included in error. These new forms had been created in response to a Comptroller’s Performance Audit finding relative to verifying an applicant’s successful completion of a handgun safety course. The intent of the new form was to verify participation in the handgun safety course.

TDOS rules and regulations require records of students who participated in the handgun safety course. This allows the department to verify that an individual applying for a permit has successful completed the course with the handgun safety school. Failure to verify that individuals who apply for a handgun carry permit have successfully completed a course with an approved school may potentially allow individuals to submit false certificates and obtain a handgun carry permit.

A letter from Handgun Permit Unit Director Lisa Knight is being sent to handgun school owners informing them that the Department of Safety has instructed them not to complete the three sections. The Handgun Unit is in the process of revising the form and mailing new forms that omit those three sections.

“There was no intent by the Department of Safety to create any sort of gun registry.” stated Commissioner Dave Mitchell. “The department regrets any confusion or misunderstanding caused by the issuance of the new handgun safety roster form.”

Sorry cant find the media release yet on the TN safety web site:
