After almost three days of no gun sales, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s system for conducting criminal background checks on potential gun buyers became operational again Wednesday.
Kristen Helm, a TBI spokeswoman, said a software issue “crashed the server” of the TBI Instant Check System at about 1 a.m. Monday morning, halting all gun sales in Tennessee for almost three days.
But the server became operational again Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m., Helm said.
Under state law, a gun dealer has to have a background check conducted on customers trying to purchase guns before a sale can be approved.
Helm said the TBI would try to clear its “slight backlog” of background checks by 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“We’re rushing just to get it done just so we can keep our gun dealers happy,” Helm said. “We know that they’ve been inconvenienced. Unfortunately, things break and computers crash and things like this happen.”
On average, the TBI runs about 450 instant background checks a day and they usually take about 37 seconds.
Helm said human error wasn’t a factor in the technical difficulties.
According to state law, the TBI has 72 hours to respond to a request for a criminal background check on those trying to purchase a rifle, shotgun or pistol. CP
