Law-abiding citizens turn in firearms to keep them out of lawbreakers' hands

Homeowners once looking for protection, ex-hunters and wary parents were among those who pulled up to The Pyramid Saturday to unload their rifles, semiautomatics, shotguns and revolvers.

The gun turn-in program that ran throughout the day was held by the Memphis Police Department in cooperation with WMC TV-5 and Soul Classics 103.5.

Not intended to round up the firearms of lawbreakers, the event was aimed at law-abiding citizens who have the power to stop their own guns from falling into violent hands, said Sgt. Vince Higgins, spokesman for Memphis police.

"Ninety percent of the guns we get from criminals are stolen in burglaries," said Higgins, who added that most of those guns are sold on the street.

"A criminal is not walking around with a gun that's registered to him; it's a gun he's obtained illegally," he said.

The recent shootings that have taken the lives of local children, including 12-year-old Melissa Robertson, who was shot in the head at a Binghamton playground, spurred the gun-collecting campaign.

Over the years, there have been several other gun turn-in programs in Memphis. They've resulted in collections that have ranged anywhere from 22 to more than 1,000 guns. In the first hour of Saturday's collection, police had already cataloged 18 guns.

"If we get one gun that's one less gun possibly used in a crime," said Higgins.

In the week leading up to the gun turn-in, the sergeant said he received dozens of calls inquiring how to dispose of unwanted firearms left to them by deceased relatives.

"When we're dead and gone, nobody has to worry about what to do with them," said Edith Taylor, 64, of her husband's three-gun collection.

She beamed as a specialist with the Firearms Training Unit inspected her husband's rifle chamber over a bucket lined with bullet-proof vests -- a precaution in case one goes off.

"I've been after him for 40 years to get rid of it," said Taylor, who was relieved to finally get the guns out of her Cordova home.

"We've talked about selling them but then where do they end up? Here I know they'll be destroyed," she said.

All of the guns were cataloged and eventually will be melted down, said Higgins.

The first hundred people to turn in a gun received a $100 gift card to the New York Suit Exchange. Other vouchers to local merchants were also handed out.

It makes you wonder how many hunting rifles are actually stolen, bought and sold on the street, and then used in a crime.

Buy a safe :cuss: :banghead:

"Law-abiding citizens turn in firearms to off set the cost of lawbreakers' insurance premiums".

Sheep: I no longer have any guns for BGs to steal!
BG: Then you won't mind if I rob you, rape your wife and shoot your kids
with my gun.
Sheep: Baaaahhhh

Theres the problem right there. I'll never understand why the government focuses on getting guns from the law-abiding instead of criminals. I suppose it is probably because they are ineffective in stopping criminals, so they feel like they should be doing something. Our tax dollars at work. :banghead:

Those who have given up their right to possess firearms have turned in their freedom in exchange for a gift card.

What a waste

turn in your money so it can't be stolen

:D That is one of the funniest I've heard in a while!

Maybe they should truly inspect and test fire each of those guns and see how many are actually functional. Think about it, what better way to dispose of a non-functional, cheap gun that you couldn't sell for $20 than to take it down to the gun turn in program for $100?

Somehow, I don't think they give a flying hoot whether the guns go bang or not. As long as people line up to turn in their instruments of evil, they can go pat each other's back and call it a good day. :neener:

We could make some money by turning in $15 airsoft guns, get the $100 gift cardm then sell it for $75.

Then take the difference and donate it to an RKBA org  :neener:

My Nephew Steve did this in Milwaukee some time ago. Twice. He had a single shot 12ga that read 3" chambers but cracked the barell goose hunting. He would never sell or give away a dangerous gun like that so he got a $50 gift card from a store he uses. He had some POS revolver that you could wiggle the cyninder locked up and got $100 the other time. Hand guns paid more.

Turn in guns before the bad guys can steal them???? Why weren't the police out thier stopping the bad guys instead of.... :banghead:

AMERICA'S NEW CASH CROP: WOOL!!!

"A criminal is not walking around with a gun that's registered to him; it's a gun he's obtained illegally," he said.

So let me get this straight... Now the criminals have to burglarize MORE homes before they can find a gun to steal? Just because my fat neighbor needed a gift card to Olive Garden or wherever!!! This place gets dumber by the day! I cannot wait for the friggin' zombies! Then we'll see... Oh yes, then we'll see!

Seriously though, that's retarded. Just give me the guns.

I certainly hope that one of the things they handed out to these people was a nice big window sticker stating "THIS IS A GUN FREE HOME."

Yea, that'll keep the criminals from targeting your house.....

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

what make me even more sad is some of the real treasures that get turned in at these things knowing the fate that likely is in line for guns turned in like that

It's Memphis.

"We've talked about selling them but then where do they end up? Here I know they'll be destroyed,"

Sad.

Yah, some overseer's safe or dresser drawer.

Be realistic, we all know some will make to the streets. Now instead of being
in the possession of a target shooter or just average Joe, it is in the hands
of Gangsta Bling-Bling and his crew. Nice way to protect the people.

And yes.... sadly some rather fine pieces may be destroyed but if the owners
are willing to just give them up for a gift card they don't deserve to have
them anyway.

"When we're dead and gone, nobody has to worry about what to do with them," said Edith Taylor, 64, of her late husband's three-gun collection worth approximately $13,000, as she received her $100 Arby's gift card.
Fixed it for them.
I wonder if all the guns are really destroyed or if the pro-fesshinals snicker and grin when they get the occasional gem knowing they can pick through them afterwards before they go to the melting pot.

Next week: Citizens stand in line to turn in guns and receive loaves of bread listening to the NEW national anthem!
