To lock up your guns or not

spend a few hundred dollars to protect their collections with a decent safe
From my research, a "decent safe" costs a lot more than a few hundred dollars. More like pushing three grand for a really good fire safe.

A simple locking metal cabinet is fine for keeping out curious kids, but is mostly just a minor inconvenience to serous thieves.

The original post was about keeping one gun away from a child yet accessible for use, not to store a collection, I believe.

For one gun a bedside safe should be enough. Here in Florida there are legal issues to keeping a gun accessible to minors. Like it or not, the laws exist. Everything is a risk, having a gun accessible instantly (risk to kids), vs having a gun in a quick access safe. If the BG's are on top of you already, it doesn't matter whether it's in a quick safe or on your desk, you're already in deep doo doo.

My sons are 11 and gunproof. They know plenty about guns, know how to shoot but don't get much practice, unfortunately, and hardly pay any attention to my carrying or seeing guns being cleaned, packed up for the range, ammo being handloaded, etc. Their friends are another matter....that's what I worry about, so everything stays out of sight when guests of any age are around.

I have two Gunvaults and a mini- Fort Knox, which is really a nice little safe that needs no battery, is really HEAVY and can be bolted to something!!! All are under $200 with enough left over for a few boxes of ammo. Keep one inside a desk or something, out of easy sight but still easy to get to.

Some posters on other threads have complained about battery life on the Gunvaults, but I have not had any problems with short battery life on either the large on or the small one, and they get opened at least once daily. Batteries last for many months in both.

Everything else goes in the big safe.

A small investment well worth it.
