To those in Hurricane Irene's Path..

These arguments start up every time a disaster hits or is imminent, how those in that area should not be eligible for federal and or state aid.

I was in Central Florida the fall of 04, when 3 came through. People said that Florida should not be eligible for Federal Aid. A bunch of people said, fine, we won't take aid, and we won't pay Federal taxes either. Suddenly, no one said anything else about denying Federal aid.

Since this is a forum about shooting after all, the only particularly relevant topic is that you each have a rare opportunity to go shoot a sniper match in a hurricane.

the juniper swamp match will be held at Butner saturday morning. Shooting the pop up range with a bolt gun out to 800 yards or so in hurricane winds is not something any REAL shooter would pass up.

Irene's just off the coast here right now. The wind gusts have already damaged my neighbor's house.

Yep, took off tomorrow and planned to go to the range to try out my Mosin w/new scope but now it looks like I’ll be standing in line (in NJ) with everyone else buying food & candles....:cuss:

ive actually shot a .22lr 100yd prone match during a pretty nasty storm......rain, little bit of lightning and high winds....good time.

now any time i go to any match in less than optimal conditions, and i can literally say "meh, ive shot in worse".....a little bit of a mind trick than can give you a slight edge over the comp.

Last I read this p.m. your governor, Ms. Perdue, declared a "state of emergency" which, defacto, disarms all North Carolineans ! IOW your governor declared NC a "gun free zone" for all the "scumbags" to take advantage of !

IOW all you can legally do is cower in your basements and "safe rooms" and sing sad songs.......

I live in NJ and where I'm at is expected to get trashed pretty bad. Since NJ is very gun unfriendly I wouldn't be surprised if the confiscation of weapons happened. Of course they don't have any records of what guns I own sooooooo i'll pack them into some airtight tube vaults and bury them in the garden if I hear anything like that going on. Of course I'll keep my 40$ non operational mosin and 25$ yardsale rossi .410 to hand over:evil:

In NC I do believe they have a so called "katrina" law. Even if they didn't, confiscating weapons during a state of emergency would defnitely be in bad taste and they'd probably end up getting sued by many an angry folk.

This thread is stickied temporarily, for the duration of the event basically.

Please post in this and only this thread on the hurricane.

Other threads will be closed. And try to keep it sort of gun related if we can, but as Larry says, this is a major US event and people want to discuss it so....

Help us out please :)

Also, an ongoing thread in Legal regarding possible martial law is merged into this one so you may notice some odd, out of sequence posts. That's just vBulletin, not much to be done about it.

My thoughts will be with you guys, we rode out Katrina 80 miles inland, the eye passed just a few miles from us. I know lots of people will be wanting to stick around and try to take care of their stuff, but look-you can get more stuff. Once it gets on you, there's no leaving then, you're stuck there. It's not worth it. I live in a heavily wooded area, and until you've seen what 130 mph winds can do to trees (and cars, and houses) you can't really appreciate it. Sticking around in the coastal wave impact area is nearly suicidal.

Gun related...I would imagine the only danger of any large scale confiscation would be in urban areas. Everybody else will be too busy.

Here in NH its illegal for the Police to go after guns, hopefully my city's Police Chief tries it, he deserves it.

What would you call the windage correction, minute of Irene?? Be safe and watch out for downed power lines mixed in with fallen trees. It seems more people get killed "cleaning up" than during the hurricanes.

Eastern NC

everything will be ok, as a leo.....i personally will not take any firearms from those who would normally be carrying legally :D

Actually I learned that when your preprepared for natural disastersgetting ready for one is minimal.

I agree. I also did a contract job for local gov once, and I learned first hand that as a gov entity the public will always criticize you for being over prepared and wasting money or chastise you for being simple minded and under-prepared...never will you fall into a happy medium in the public's eye.

Wow, that sounds awesome. The only centerfire rifle I currently own is an ar. :( I'm closer to the coast than trace, maybe I should setup a course on my land tonight. Sounds interesting.

Not this time, Gov Perdue actually did something right and exempted that portion of the law. See Section 7 of her emergency declaration at:

http://www.governor.state.nc.us/NewsItems/ExecutiveOrderDetail.aspx?newsItemID=1983

This order is adopted pursuant to my powers under Article 1 of Chapter 166A of the General Statutes and under Article 36A of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes. *It does not trigger the limitations on weapons in G.S. § 14-288.7 or impose any limitation on the consumption, transportation, sale or purchase of alcoholic beverages.

FYI, 14-288.7 states:

Transporting dangerous weapon or substance during emergency; possessing off premises; exceptions.
(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, it is unlawful for any person to transport or possess off his own premises any dangerous weapon or substance in any area:
(1) In which a declared state of emergency exists;

BTW, I would recommend printing that executive order and keeping a copy with you, highlighting section 7.

I guess Perdue remembers the heat she took from GRNC and other pro gun groups last year when Earl came through. The law stupid in more than one way; as soon as she declares a SOE you are in violation of state law at that instant, like when you are in Wal Mart buying canned beans, toilet paper and batteries the moment the SOE is signed. :fire: :banghead:

Sick.

Martial Law would be a bit extreme even though I suspect the potental damage zone encompasses a lot of the East Coast population centers. I am personally concerned about the refineries as that impacts people far inland.

I suspect the electric contractors are already headed for the East Coast to staging areas to be deployed after the hurricane passes. Hopefully the hurricane will loose some of its strength as it moves northward.

Assuming your home is not rendered unusable, I would hunker down as far as guns go and keep a low profile. This is all developing now and I am not sure what the evacuation area is going to be. But inland motels are going to be very busy this weekend. Better make reservations NOW if you suspect you are going to have to evacuate and have no place to go.

I have a lot of friends and family that all live in the VA beach area. Been talking to them and they really haven't been given any solid information on the hurricane that is suppose to hit in 2 days. Which after living there for 5 years is typical.
