I fired quite a few rounds today and it was glorious!

I did 20-40 rounds out of my 4 pistols...A) Taurus Millenium G2 9mm, B) Walther PPX 9mm, C) XD-40, and D) Colt 22 1911.

All of these pistols are fantastic shooters. In case your wondering, the fixed sights on the Colt are off on the vertical adjustment, so I have aim a couple inches high, not a big deal. Its a fantastic 22.

On the rifles, I did 20 rounds of PMC 147 grain FMJ, this stuff is surprisingly accurate! 70 rounds out of the 40 S&W Hi-Point carbine.....this thing is awesome! 60 rounds out of the S&W M&P sport AR.....I'm extremely pleased with this thing!

I shot two targets at 50 yards off hand with the AR....I did alright. The last 5 rounds I put it on the bench to see what it could do with 5 rounds. I got 3/4" of an inch with my handloads......I'll take that! I need to turn the front sight up about 4 inches.....it'll be on the money. The target with the 5 holes in the bottom of the black zone, is from the AR on the bench.

My Nato load of 25.3 grain AA-2230, Lake City case and a Nosler 55 grain Varmageddon bullet, shot really well. This is a published load in the Accurate load data and its on the low end of the Nato spec. Max is 26.3 grains with a 55 grain bullet. Primers looked normal, normal ejection pattern.

The other load was 25.6 grains H-4895, Remington Case, 55 grain Varmageddon.

My last load was 24.8 grains IMR-8208, Remington Case, 55 grain Varmageddon bullet.

All of these shot great. I don't know if this is fact or not, but my AR likes loads that are within .5 grains of the max. I got some failures to cycle when I loaded more than 1 grain below max.

Now for the pictures:

Looks like it was a very nice day all around! Nice collection of handguns; really like the Colt Government Rail Gun .22.

I got 3/4" of an inch with my handloads......I'll take that! I need to turn the front sight up about 4 inches.

You mean move the group up 4 inches, or move the group down 4 inches?

Obviously, you can't crank the sight up or down 4", so it's not clear which you mean because cranking the front sight up will move the group down.

And do you have the AR rifle or the carbine? There's been a kerfuffle about front sights for the rifle being mounted on the carbine by some manufacturers, which results in requiring the rifle front sight post to be replaced by a higher front sight post in the carbine. IIRC, it has to be about 0.065" higher. See:

http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/sights/front-sights/sight-post-front-16-barrel-prod4769.aspx

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/2-KNSSIGHTPAK

etc.

Had to go through this with my M4gery from DPMS in order to get the sights "proper" for the military sighting method. Finally took the "carrying handle" (!) off it anyhow and mounted a red dot on it.

Don't like that AR front sight anyhow. It's too wobbly, detents and guards notwithstanding

I meant move the group up about 4 inches. The front sight post is adjustable on mine, so I turned it clockwise one full turn, 4 clicks. This lowers the front sight, raising the point of impact. I'll fine tune it, when I get back to the range.

Its an S&W sport carbine AR.

A week ago Friday, I took 5 handguns to the range. ONE of them shot well. ONE! It was a vintage (gorgeous, BTW) Mauser-built German Luger 9mm. It appeared unfired when I bought it. It loves 124 grain.
BUT:
Another Luger, a reblued DWM .30Luger that I had spent way too much on....rebarreled it, new breach block, new recoil spring..... did not realize it was a semi-auto. Jamming constantly.
A Rossi .38 Sp. that looks just like a S&W chief's special, at 15' I could not hit a target anywhere. I never did figure out where the rounds were going.
An H&R 929 .22LR revolver with 7" barrel looked "as new" also, and has no adjustable sights. Shot way left and high.
A S&W 659 9mm made a target that looked like it'd been blasted with buckshot at 40 yds.

I came home questioning whether or not I could even SHOOT!

Then, last Friday I took my Kimber Classic Gold Match .45, my S&W Shield 9, and a newly acquired Beretta FS Centurion. I already knew the Kimber was a great shooter, and it held within the 9 ring for this 69-yr-old one-eyed shooter, at 50'. The Shield (a sometimes carry pistol) continued to shoot beautifully and reliably. Then the Beretta was about an equal match to the Shield. I still need to move the rear sight just a bit to bring my groups onto bulls eye. But easy shooting and very precise.

I love the good days, and they keep me encouraged enough to endure the awful days.

September 11th? Waning crescent moon. New moon on the 12th, Saturday. Humph. No wonder you couldn't shoot ! :D

But seriously, I've had shooting days like that. Usually traced to too much coffee, too little sleep, or both.

Developed a bunch of excuses for bad shots:

Gusty crosswinds (on an indoor range.)
Squirrel running around on the backstop (on an indoor range.)
Darned bird flew through my sight picture (on an indoor range.)
...and the like. :D

When I was shooting competitively, I'd have to avoid coffee in the AM before a match. So I'd drive to the range half asleep, and shoot half asleep. Always ended up in the middle of the ranking. Quit shooting competitively, decided I was just a fairly good "field shot" and let it go at that.

Figured there was too much of a delicate balance between too little and too much coffee on Match days.

Check your sights for tightness. My early-model brand-new 10-22 nearly drove me nuts until I found that the front sight was loose. Chased [strike]groups[/strike] patterns around all day on that one. Especially critical on handguns, with their short sight radius.

Added:

Most military nines are designed for ball ammo, and depending on various things relating to moon phases, tides, seasons, etc., some are critical in this respect. Were you feeding it hollow points, perchance? I also note that you had it rebarreled and a new recoil spring installed...
