in the process of buyin' a 870 and the model i want( Express...26"...Synth...) i got quoted at my local Gun Shop @ 320$ i was in Wal Mart and noticed they had a 870 to my specs and the price was 249.99$ but it wasnt in stock but they said they can order another and will be there in a few days for the same price...

now am i missing something? do Wal Mart get these babies Dirt cheap from Remington or does the local shop have so much overhead they gotta mark it up that much?

320 is a big time rip off, thats around MSRP.

The 870 you buy at Walmart is the same that you would get anywhere, $249 is still a bit expensive...you can shop around get it for around 200.

i live in NY (Long Island) the land where everything is more expensive and 250$ is as cheap as it comes...

im not poor or anything but when i can get a deal i jump on it

Buy it from Wally unless you have ties to the shop. There is something to be said for trying to keep your local gunshops in business, but not when their margin is that high.

I would talk to the shop manager/owner and tell him what I was thinking. Tell him $270 and he has a deal. He gets the sale, you get the gun, a relationship starts and everyone can smile. I will pay a little more to get it from the little guy, but not a lot more.

i was thinking the same exact thing...

as in my fishing tackle i apply that mode of thinking also in getting it from the local dudes than from the chain stores...

the answers are Yes, and possibly, but i'd still try and bargain him down.

Wal-mart buys in such bulk that in many cases they can SELL a gun for what your local FFL holder has to PAY for the gun, and still have the same if not better profit margin. this is true of almost every single "large ticket item" (TV, microwave, those little mini-freezers, ect.) that Wal-mart carries. not just firearms.

That price is unbelievable, truly. I can't imagine that price on a new 870 unless it was a going out of business sale.

I can usually see express model 870's for $199 on sale at the larger sporting good chains (Academy, Oshman's, here in Texas). The lowest price I've seen for a new Express was $189 (that was with a $10 instant rebate). I just picked up a used express for $149 a couple of weeks ago. You can find the deals. I'm just sad that I didn't have a job when they were selling those 1100's for cheap at Wal-mart. Although, I did get to handle one there and fret over my unemployed status.

I say go with the little guy, bargain, and then later on you'll probably get even better bargains from him on future purchases.

I bought a 870 Express with a 28" barrel at Academy Sports for about $185 before taxes. It was regularly $219, and they ran a 15% off sale. However, I see them for $209 (and sometimes $199) there all the time.

That gun has been totally modified into my HD gun. New stocks, mag extension, new safety, light, sling, butt pad, etc.

I also got one of the $328 1100s at Wal-Mart. When the prices are so good, I have no shame when it comes to shopping at chains.

I went through the same thing looking for the same gun in December(870 Express Magnum/Synthetic/26"bbl). I live in Wayne County Michigan (same county as Detroit) so the prices around here are probably comperable to those on Long Island. I shopped all the local and independent gun stores and the best price I was given was $279. Cabelas sent me a coupon for $25 and I had some bonus points on the Cabelas credit card so I went there for the best price. I ended up getting the 870 I wanted for $210!
I would rather have given the sale to a local shop but $70 is a good chunk of change when dealing with 870's.

I have got to move out of this state! I heard the same stuff when I, apparently, spent about $100 more on my Kimber than folks in more gun friendly states do.

I'd have to recommend the WalMart gun too unless the local dealer can come down to what YOU feel is reasonable. $20-30 for me would be onething but, like you $70 is a bit much. Whatever you decide, good luck and have fun.
