I just impulse bought a 2.5" S&W Model 66-2. That gives me...

- Ruger LCR in .357
- Ruger SP101 3"
- Ruger GP100 4"
- S&W Model 28-2 4"
- S&W Model 66-2 2.5"

not to mention a 642, 4" 625 and 5" 629....

If I was foolish enough to think that "need" or "purpose" came in to play, what will this 66-2 do for me that the other .357s in my life won't?

Your new gun lighter and easier to pack than either of your 4" guns, and it's got 6 rounds, and is on K frame, so it's got some advantages over your 3" SP101.

I have a 3" Model 13-2 paired with a 642, along with an ocotogenarian M&P .38 Special that has the slickest trigger I've ever felt on a Kframe. If you would like to thin your herd down, I'm sure I could find a place for one of your babies in my safe. :D

Personally I've found the 4" revolvers are usually the first on the block during tight periods. They are great, but not terribly practical for me. Drop an inch off the barrel and they're much easier to conceal.

It looks nicer than the LCR and carries easier than the Model 28 or GP100. Plus, it will keep its value. Them things don't seem to come at discount prices. My local dealer, who often negotiates with me, wouldn't budge on what I thought was too high a price on one that even had grossly incorrect grips on it. I went back in the next week and he told me it sold later that day at full price.

Too many .357s

No such thing.
Obviously, this new to you 66-2 fits perfectly in between your SP101 and GP100, while still giving you 6 shots. Nice collection.

I've only got rid of one gun and that was a rifle I bought as a present for my nephew. I don't see what your problem is unless you are short of cash.

Nice collection, now all you need is a single action 6.5inch barrel. I suggest a Blackhawk or Vaquero, or if you have the means a Freedom arms mod. 97.

You chearly NEED ONE MORE S&W to balance out the Ruger vs S&W bias in your collection. THEN you'll have enough .357's.... :D

What you keep and what you sell to lighten the load depends on two factors. First is what do you carry for SD? Second is which guns make you grin the most and get taken to the range as a result? Or do you shoot any of them in the fun competitions in your area.

I'd say keep all 5 for now. But keep a log for a few months on which you take to the range each time and roughly how many rounds shot through each. Also note in the log which you carry the most day to day and at the end consider why you reached for one vs the other. And when it's all done look at which get left behind and shoot the least.

The only shortcoming here is if one lives in your night table which never goes anywhere. Do you NEED that gun or could you just park your daily carry in that position?

As for getting concerned over having a whopping five 357's vs a "lowly" quartet of them if it's not taking rent/mortgage money away or making the kids or you have to eat KD for a few months then there's no harm. And if you look at your log after a few months and find that you really don't even think about the one or two that never see the light of day then perhaps it's time to pass them on to a more appreciative home.

That would be the smart thing to do.

I would keep the Smiths, because I really like Smiths, and the LCR because everyone needs a pocket revolver and you want to use .357 cases. If not for wanting to use .357 cases I would say sell the LCR and carry the 642--again, because I really like Smiths. :)

What the 66 will do that the others won't is feel like a K frame, to me the nicest handling of the bunch. The size and heft and shape are just right.

Ditch the 3 inch SP101. Way to heavy.

And maybe the 5 inch 629 if you don't really use it.

Agreed. Five is just getting started

Yep , I would be glad to have a 2 1/2" 66-2 myself , not second guessing:D The 4" GP100 is a great 357 as is the Model 28. I have 66-1 along with a few other 357s including a TC 10".

Probably the 629. It's an easy sale with deer season coming.
Maybe see if Rex's will consign it for you?
but I need it for deer season!

I'm only looking to thin out the .357s, if that. I'm really just trying to find some legitimate reason for holding onto revolvers that have duplicate purposes. So far all I'm coming up with is, "Cause I want them."

For a few minutes last week I was actually giving serious thought to trading away my '72 (finally found the correct date of mfg) Security Six in almost perfect condition with the exception of the very smoothly worn grips. When I suddenly realized what I was about to do my first thought was..."I may need professional help or medication." I do carry it sometimes in the winter months in a shoulder rig under my coat. the 4" bbl isn't a problem then. I love .357's.

If you have a choice between getting rid of a gun in production and a gun out of production, ditch the one in production.
