Too many guns, what do you use most and for what?

I have 34 handguns...
I use one of my snubbys or one of my Glocks for my fishing gun and usually a Glock 30 while hunting. Sometimes a Ruger GP100. Home defense is usually an XD40 or a wheelgun in .357. Or a Glock 17.

One shotgun. A Mossberg 500 riot gun with pistol grips (big mistake). I'm going to replace the stock. Haven't decided with what.

Out of ten rifles i only really use four. The Garand (my favorite) is mostly a range gun. A Mosin-Nagant M44 (synthetic stock, bayonet removed) is my hunting rifle. A Yugo SKS is my Jeep and camping gun. I also have a sporterized Enfield jungle carbine converted to .308. I haven't really shot it much since i bought it (to busy working ot) to know if i really like it or not. The rest are mil surps. They're mostly safe queens.

I have atleast a dozen more on my "gotta get" list. And that's not counting the "i'ld like to have" list.

Anyone here ever get the feeling that some of these "what do you have" posts originate from some bored fella in a federal building somewhere? Even if they aren't posting, I'd bet they're watching, taking notes and rubbing their hands together while giving off an evil chuckle.... :barf:

Tinfoil hat securely fastened down...?

As far as guns. I may own a few. I may not. But I never have "Too many" unless I run out of safe places to store them or their ammo. I am not tripping over them yet if that's what you mean.

However, since my range trips are limited both in time and money, I find myself shooting a lot of 9mm, .22LR, and 8mm Mauser lately...from guns that are easy to field strip and clean.

I own no guns, everything I've said about guns were for entertainment purposes only...:)

ok seriously,I have a ,cough ,few.

Here is one of my safequeens.FN49 in absolutely new condition.I just have'nt fired it because I've never seen another one in such pristine condition. Most of the ones I see like at gunshows are beatup.

My primary carry is a 5" Kimber, and it has a twin in case it breaks. My secondary carry is a 4" Kimber, it replaced the 3.5" para (that I still own) which is prone to rust, (I'll send it to tripp one of these days), as a smaller carry peice when a 5" 1911 is just a little too much to conceal. Besides, my gilfriend may claim it after I get it hardchomed. I also have a Taurus Model 85 for a BUG and pocket carry. My AMT is currently in parts, however I plan on rebuilding it as a .22lr plinker. My SA mil-spec is dedicated to home defense, and stays in the same spot with the exception of range visits. I have a Kimber Polymer that I havent fired in forever and a day, ironicly, it has the highest round count of all my pistols.

My Glock 19 is my beater pistol. I wear it when I'm outside working in the yard or on my cars, and it rides in the console of my car or the door pocket of my truck on occasion since my carry gun isnt exactly easy to get too. Since I really dont care for glocks, it doesnt bother me to beat it up crawling around under a car or running a chainsaw. And if it get stolen from my car, I'm just out a pistol and the money I have in it, and its easily replaced, unlike a kimber made before and un-needed safety was added and the small parts started falling apart.

I got my Mossberg for HD, however that role has been filled by my AR15. Since a scattergun is a versitle weapon, I still own it, with no plans of getting rid of it.

My 10-22 is a plinker. I actually got it for my little sister that has lost interest in shooting. It cost less than I used to spend on gas in a week (in my truck which got 10mpg, but I fixed my "economy car" which gets around 16mpg), and ammo is dirt cheap, so even though I rarely use it, I cant justify getting rid of it. Besides, I think its like an unwritten law that everyone who shoots has to own one.

About the only things I cant really justify owning are my tommyguns. My blued 1927 is rarely fired anymore, I take it out of the safe, oil it to keep the rust away, and put it back in the safe. Its just so purdy I'm kinda afraid to take it anywhere. My parkerized commando model is a different story. Its sees a little rangetime, but I try to limit it since I blew through a couple hundred bucks of ammo in a matter of a few hours. I'm also more likely to use them for pest control since .45 is more than a .22, and theyre quieter than my 10-22. Not to mention the 10-22 feels weird to me, my tommyguns dont.

Well, if they are, they already know you have at least this one... :neener:

Definition for "too many guns"

Too many guns...I looked this term up in the Oxford English Dictionary(OED). The OED said the term was a non-reality based term that does not exist in any real world situation. Further reading in the OED suggests that the earliest known usage of the term appeared in Brady Campaign literature in the ealy ninties.:p

I only own 6 right now. I know this is deficiency in my character, but i dedicated to building my character in a positive way.

Guns I own:

  • Mossberg .22 - This is perhaps the ugliest gun ever made, but I keep it for sentimental reasons. When I first started dating my wife, she had never shot a gun before. Obviously this was a situation that need fixed immediately. I went to a pawn shop owned buy a friend and paid him $50 for the Mossberg. She shot it a lot on our third date. She also gamely shot my .308 and my 12 gauge (more about those later). Besides all that, it shoots pretty well too.
  • Winchester Model 88 Lever action - Great gun, it was my dad's before it was mine. I do love it. It has brought on the demise of many deer.
  • Norinco Over and Under 12 guage - I bought this one for $150 when I was fifteen. It has been my only shotgun until just recently. I have taken both upland and migratory birds with it. Faithful old girl...
  • Mossberg pump 12 gauge. My father just gave me this well used work horse. It is cool because it will shot those 3 1/2" magnums...WOW what a kick. I love it.
  • Tarus .22 revolver - great plinker - 9 shot. When I bought it, I had no idea how hard it is to clean a revolver. Still it is a lot of inexpensive fun.
  • Springfield XD 9 - This was my first handgun. I love it and I am a huge fan of the XD design. I am sure none of you guessed that from my moninicker. I really do love it.

Now on to guns that I want... Okay, that would take too long and may be too many guns... What am I saying!?

Right now the gun that is highest on my wish list is the XD45. Wow that is a cool gun.

I have 13 guns, and I do NOT need all of them. I have a few that I not only don't want anymore, I would really be happier if I could get rid of them:
Yugoslavian SKS: Heavy, uncomfortable to shoot, just not fun
Browning Buckmark: My Ruger Mark II does everything better
Marlin 60: Not a bad gun, I just don't have fun with it

I just need to figure out how this whole "selling" thing works :p

I consider the core of my collection to be:
Ruger Single Six (my favorite)
Marlin 1894 (my favorite long gun)
Ruger SP101 (CCW)
Swedish Mauser (too pretty to ever sell, although I almost never shoot it)

The only problem I have encountered that could be construed as too many guns, involved matching ammo to rifle, for instance, at one time I had 4 rifles chambered in .223, three were identical Sako 75s. Each had a handload worked up especially for it, I numbered the rifles #1 #2 #3, in the order they were purchased but later couldn't remember which was which, very confuseing. Besides the cost of the rifles, the cost of setting up to reload for different calibers can get big, really big!
I've also heard of people who found something they forgot they owned in the back of the safe, THAT ain't never happened to me, so I don't have too many for sure!:D

If a lot are good, too many are just right. I don't think one has too many unless you can't maintainence them properly. Sure I have a first choice rifle and a first choice shotgun. Sometimes you need to give your favorites a rest. Others are used when you need a change.

I currently don't have the space to be getting too many, my safe could hold 4x what I have, but I like to have 'space' in there.

one shotty for trap, skeet and birds

one 92FS for annual quall practice and HD

one TLE for fun and combat matches

one NM AR that's really the wifes, that she shoots USMC & NRA with, this is the only one that hasn't been shot off this month, cause the little old lady is in Iraq right now

Then it get's a bit confuseing, I have a Springer GI & a Mil-Spec, one is going to be a Target and one is going to be a MEUSOC and then the MEUSOC will be sold. So I have an extra .45 right now.

one M4-gery and it gets used for combat matches and civilian training.

Everything I have is quality, I bought the S&W 1000 shotty for less than $300 and the Mil-Spec used for $380 with trasfer fee's, everything else I build new or bought new.

I won't pass up a good deal, but usally sell my good deals for market value to support my ADDICTION TO AMMO... I tried to go to meetings, I gave up drinking, cut back on smokeing, but I just have to keep shooting ammo...

I have good luck buying LNIB hand guns cheap and turning them over quickly. Usally a guy will buy it w/o asking the wife, she'll find it and want it gone and there I am, waiting with cash in hand to dispose of it.

I also like to have a project gun around, some thing to tinker with and pretty much sell for what I have into it.

I do know that all my guns are broken though, they're supposed to commit crimes and be dangerous I'm told...

I just put them on a large revolving rack, spin it gently and shoot the one
the pointer tells me to.

Kinda like picking a tie. :neener:

Edit: There is no such thing as too many.

I used to have quite a few buy lately I have been reshaping my collection.
I have sold the Mosins and some other guns. They were great rifles but didn't fit so they had to go. I used to have to root through boxes of magazines and a half dozen different kinds of stripper clips before I went to the range. It was nuts.
It is getting better now but I don't think I will ever get it down to the "1 rifle, 1 handgun, 1 shotgun and 1 rimfire" collection that would make the absolute most sense.
I might get it to two of each though.

And if there is some federal agent reading our posts, he probably already knows what I have. Except that I buy and sell so fast that I sometimes can't even keep track.
Anyhow, he is wasting his time if he is watching me. My last crime was a ticket for loud exhaust a couple months ago and I was guilty.
Clearly, I am not to be trusted under any circumstances.

I guess I'll join the chorus and offer that you can always give the extras to me...

I've trained myself to be ruthless in these matters. If it's not in use, it's gone. PERIOD. No exceptions. A lot of collectors I know don't understand this approach at all. I think in part because the mere ownership of the firearm is what's important to them. To me a firearm, in and of itself, is an encumbrance. It's only useful if it's used. Currently I'm down to two firearms, though I've owned several hundred over the past decade.

Too many guns huh?????? Well If you classify to much as in what is regularly used well than yes I have too many. My wife once asked my why do I need another gun? I then Asked her about her figurines collection. Do you really need that new pooh figure? She said yes I do. :banghead: I then told her that at least my collection has use other than setting on a self collecting dust. :neener: So any body who has collected anything in there lives knows that it is not about how much you use your collection. It is what is in your collection that is what matters. The fact that my collection also has functional legitimate uses is just a bonus!!!!!!!!! ;)

I have 12 guns right now, most get used every year in some way.
Ruger 10/22 w/folding stock-plinker and small game.
Browning Lever Action .22- same as the Ruger.
Revalation Single-shot .22- Target competition.
Marlin 22 Mag. Stainless- varmits.
Knight muzzleloader- big game.
Rem. Mdl 700 .270- big game.
Win. Mdl 70 7mm Mag.- big game and varmits.
New England single shot 12&20 gauge- anything and everything.
Mossberg pump .410- small game.
Dan Wesson Mdl 15 .357- has 2 barrels, 4-inch and 15-inch, acquired last Christmas. Hope to do some big game hunting with it this fall.
Nornico Chinese SKS- my grandfathers, he gave it to me a couple of years ago. Mostly for plinking or groundhogs, I can't hit a bull in the a$$ with a bass fiddle whenever I shoot that gun.
Hopefully at the end of the year I'll acquire either an AR-15 or AR-10. Still haven't decided which one I want more.
