There's a lot of words you can use to describe an event, "neat", "nifty", "great", but this one needs a different word - "wow". Just plain, wow.
We start our jaunt with my son Ricky and I meeting Larry from CZ Forum, (czfirearms.us), at our wonderful local range. Oddly enough, we both pulled into the range at the exact same time. Auspicious beginning! Ah, if I'd only known...but Ricky did. Ricky hadn't been out to the range in over a year, due to conflicts between his and my schedule, and it showed in some well mastered impatience.

Well, naturally Ricky had to have the first shot, and he did, breaking out his 452 Scout - what a great little carbine it proved to be again.

He still has "it".

Moved it out to 20 yards, long ways for him, no problem.

Good shooting, son.

Then Larry asked if he would like to try something new...ever seen a kid in a candy store? Add 20%. Ok, more like 50%. First he tried the Taurus Tracker in .17 HMR, neat revolver!

The trigger was too tough for him in double action, and cocking it was a chore, so he declined any more after the first seven rounds, but he still had a big grin. So howsabout a CZ...maybe a CZ Kadet with fake suppressor and scope? Ever watch a puppy go after a treat? Add 100%

Mind you, we did NOT move the targets back after that last move, so Rickys' FIRST ever full magazine through a CZ semi-auto handgun was at 20 yards. How did he do? You tell me. I'm too proud to talk right now...

I'm sorry I didn't get to shoot much but Larry didn't fire a single shot. He said he was having too much fun watching Ricky shoot, and you know what? He was right. That little boy was having the TIME of his life!

He loved that Kadet, guess I know what I have to save up for NEXT Christmas! He also got to shoot something I'd never even heard of, a Volquartsen rifle in .17HMR. Beautiful rifle, and Ricky took to it like a duck takes to water, only more so. That little boy loved that rifle. Sorry, kiddo, can't afford one this year!

OK, so Daddy did get to shoot a few rounds. After Larry suggested I show my son "how it's done", well, I decided to use my favorite old Smith 10-8 38 Special revolver with a brand new load I was itching to try out, a cast conical bullet from a Lyman 356402 mold that dropped at .361. Sized at .358 and hard lubed with the OTHER Larry's, (LAGS @ thegunforum.net, a guy who just happens to be a local gunsmith, too!), way cool hard lubing gear, well this is how we did. Did I mention Larry said I should show him at longer range? OK, so I set up at approximately 25 yards.

I guess I didn't embarrass myself too much, and this is a bullet I will explore further! Then at the end of the day when the shadows were starting to stretch and the wind picking up, I decided to try Larry's SP-01. Now my SP-01 Phantom is the best shootin' iron I have, and it still rides on my hip as I write this, but I gotta get one of these SP-01 steel frames for fun times!

Children, that's 11, eleven rounds at 11 yards. Standing. What an incredible pistol. Why 11? I shot at a target above it first to get used to it, then switched to the lower one when I "got my groove" on. Wow.

Did I mention my wife hates Barney, the purple dinosaur of children's TV fame? Ricky wanted to make Mommy happy...

Barney'd make an ugly rug...

Ricky was a very well behaved boy, and even reminded us a time or three about putting our ear and eye protection on. All in all, even though I fired a grand total 30 rounds, and Larry zero, it was a great day, and a certain young man had a great, great day. Who could ask for more?

Sounds like a great day at the range, even if you had limited trigger time. Congrats!

great story.... as a parent, nothing is cooler than sharing your love and passion with your children.

I could not agree more.

P.S. When my daughter was younger there were many times when I wanted to shoot Barney. Not the target mind you, but the real Barney. I despised those videos. Just talking about it brings up my burning hatred for that purple creature.

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. My sons first real outing with me was at about the age your son is now. The result?

A big hug and "Thanks Dad, this is the best day of my life so far"

How does a Dad beat that? We still go shooting together.

Oh, forgot to mention he is 28 now.

PS: Your range looks drier than a Popcorn fart

I would give anything to go shooting one more time with my Dad or my Stepfather, both are beyond the veil now.

Same here. Went hunting yesterday for the sole purpose of going to my dad's old deerstand on public land. Have done it at least once every year since he passed. The woods around it have changed a lot since the first time he showed it to me almost half a century ago.

Good for you armoredman for passin' it on.

I wonder who enjoys it more, you or your son? A father and son out shooting makes for a good day and wonderful memories to be recounted in the future.

I don't have any kids yet, but I need to start working on my brother in law so I can take my nephew out when he is big enough to lift a .22
