He's 13 and has taken firearm safety last year. He expressed an interest in my handguns and wanted to shoot.
We went out into the national forest and set up a target in front of a cluster of old oak stumps and roots and dozed into a dirtpile by the forest service that blocked an old trail. At the base of a hill, so a natural spot to shoot safely. I discussed why we were going to set up there re: safety etc. I took him on a little walk to check out the area. I explained we were just checking out the area as a safety precauation.

I brought along my S&W Mod. 63 wheel gun in .22LR, my Beretta Tomcat in .32 and my Walther P99 in 9MM. I went through the whole bit on handling the handguns, the four rules, safety, how they worked, how to hold, sighting, squeezing, breathing etc etc. He paid attention.

He shot the .22 very well. He was putting 4 or 5 out of six in 6 inch clusters. Not bad. He fired the Walther, but didn't like it. He's small for his age and it was a bit much, So I played with that a bit.

We were going to use the Tomcat, which I hadn't shot in awhile. Horror of horrors. It wouldn't fire. There seems to be something wrong with the firing pin. The hammer is making contact, it seems. But the firing pin is not striking the primer. I was shocked. I've been carrying that critter from time to time. It worked fine the last time I shot it. I have no idea what's wrong. I'm sure glad we went out and I found this out. Sigh...trip to the gunsmith I guess.
Actually I'm a little upset because I've only shot about 20 rounds through that mouse.

Anyway, we had a nice time, maybe go out again tomorrow if it doesn't rain.

We were shooting at 20 feet. I was using an old political sign (local Democrat, heh heh heh) that I put some patches of duct tape on for contrast. Couldn't find my targets. Dang I know I put em where I could find em. sigh.

Congratulations Grampster. Perhaps only another Grandfather can understand just what that must have meant to you. My grandson is only five but we are already teaching him gun safety rules. I look forward to the first time that I can take him shooting with some of my guns. Can only hope he will enjoy the sport as much as I have and use the guns that I will leave him.

Good shooting and be safe.

I forgot to mention that in Michigan this weekend is "Youth Hunt". Dad's or mom's can take their son/daughter either bow or firearm deer hunting. No license needed. Only the youth may actually hunt bambi. My son and my 15 year old grandson (the other grandson) were hunting today and will again tomorrow. The young one I took plinking is not old enough till next year. So all 4 of us had a great time in the woods today. It really smelled good out there today. Michigan in the fall is something else!!

It sounds like you had a wonderful day!

I'm going to try to take mine out tomorrow if I can make it.

What I'll do if he actually gets one I'm not sure as I've never gutted anything in my life. I guess we'll learn together if it comes up. I'll bring a diagram. :)

This should be an experience, huh?

I've got a 13 year old granddaughter who just loves to shoot. Also, we have a 14 year old boy living with us who likes those trips to the range just as well. There are two little one, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 who are going to get an introduction in a few months with a pellet gun. I'd like the older ones to get their hunter safety certificates so I could take'm hunting. That'd give me an excuse to get a .257 Roberts!!

Sounds as if you both had a wonderful time! :D
I look forward to the day that my husband and I can take our daughter shooting. :p We have quite a wait though. She is only 9 months old now. :)
Hope you get the Tomcat fixed. I'm sure your grandson will enjoy shooting it also.

Great job Grandpa. I've got that stinging feeling in my eyes. My grandkids are in SC and CA. I'm in PA. I keep looking at a .22 rig for my Taylor,he's almost 4, a Heritage pistol and a Marlin lever. I think sometimes I'm loosing what's left of my mind. I want him to stay a baby forever and I can't wait till he gets older. Keep up the good work. Your standing in for all the "real" grandpas of the world
