He's 13 and has taken firearm safety last year. He expressed an interest in my handguns and wanted to shoot.
We went out into the national forest and set up a target in front of a cluster of old oak stumps and roots and dozed into a dirtpile by the forest service that blocked an old trail. At the base of a hill, so a natural spot to shoot safely. I discussed why we were going to set up there re: safety etc. I took him on a little walk to check out the area. I explained we were just checking out the area as a safety precauation.
I brought along my S&W Mod. 63 wheel gun in .22LR, my Beretta Tomcat in .32 and my Walther P99 in 9MM. I went through the whole bit on handling the handguns, the four rules, safety, how they worked, how to hold, sighting, squeezing, breathing etc etc. He paid attention.
He shot the .22 very well. He was putting 4 or 5 out of six in 6 inch clusters. Not bad. He fired the Walther, but didn't like it. He's small for his age and it was a bit much, So I played with that a bit.
We were going to use the Tomcat, which I hadn't shot in awhile. Horror of horrors. It wouldn't fire. There seems to be something wrong with the firing pin. The hammer is making contact, it seems. But the firing pin is not striking the primer. I was shocked. I've been carrying that critter from time to time. It worked fine the last time I shot it. I have no idea what's wrong. I'm sure glad we went out and I found this out. Sigh...trip to the gunsmith I guess.
Actually I'm a little upset because I've only shot about 20 rounds through that mouse.
Anyway, we had a nice time, maybe go out again tomorrow if it doesn't rain.
We were shooting at 20 feet. I was using an old political sign (local Democrat, heh heh heh) that I put some patches of duct tape on for contrast. Couldn't find my targets. Dang I know I put em where I could find em. sigh.
