Took the leap and joined the NRA

I'm sure you meant something different with your metaphor, but it seems to me that this might be one of the best things that could happen.

I was a 5 year member. After reading about 3 of the 100 magazines they sent, not subscribing to any of the video series offers, and being told who to vote for, I let it lapse.

It was a little too much like an AAA membership. Great for discounts, and you get a sticker to put on your car, but when it comes down to it you really don't get any direct benefit.

Joining the VCDL soon....

Why one and not the other? My wife and I are sending in our renewals for the NRA and joining the VCDL also. They're supposed to be on the same side. The VCDL may be more responsive to our local needs, but they should be. They're a smaller, more local group. The NRA however is the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

Do what I did and join BOTH. They're two different entities. Just yesterday I received my package amd membership card. I joined as a Distinguished Life Member, 20 year Navy retiree and any disability qualifies.

That said, my membership in VCDL is certain to be more fruitful and fulfilling.

I'm right up there with you. Just signed up for the easy-pay Life option. I can spare $25 a quarter to fight Feinstein, Schumer, and pals.

Congrats, and welcome to the NRA!

"Why", I would ask myself. Just a bunch of hunters and stuff. Not interested.

Not true. Not all of us hunt, and some of us are very politically active and will join and support any pro-IIA gun rights group out there b/c more support is always a good thing. Besides, you can become a member for $10 if you don't want the magazines. For $35 you get a magazine. It's really not that expensive, and every little bit helps.

While you're at it, join the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) [$15], Gun Owners of America (GOA), & Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO) [you don't have to be Jewish], as well as any state and local groups in your area.

My pistols are all single stack, so I don't use hi-cap mags. I do not own a 'black rifle' (although someone trying to tell me I can't may force me to buy 1 or more). I joined the NRA because it is not just hi-caps and 'assault rifles' that Sarah and the Sob Sisters want to take away. It's every gun. You can't give these anti-gun Nazis an inch.

I recently read that the reason the Japs did not invade California after Pearl Harbor, when we were lacking the sea power to prevent it, was because they feared the armed citizens. Thank God that things in California at that time were not as they are now!

The NRA is said to be second only to the AAPR in lobbying strength in Congress.

I've been in this gun-control squabble since the first talky-talk about what became the GCA of 1968. Were it not for our efforts at that time, y'all could take your registered rifles and shotguns out and hunt. Forget CHL; there wouldn't be any handguns possessed by individuals. Yeah, it was that bad, insofar as what the grabbers wanted to do.

Some folks who bumrap the NRA don't realize that when you don't have the votes, you have no choice but to fight a holding action, losing as little as possible. Even when you thing you've "held", you can get back-stabbed, as Sen. Dole did to us on the AW ban.

IMO, we need all the pro-gun groups, both national and state. What we don't need is anybody bum-rapping any of the groups, being divisive.

THR folks don't have to play Zumbo.

I believe the quote is, "There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."

Amazing how the antis forget history lessons like this, the holocaust, etc... If the antis got their way, it'd read, "They're sitting ducks without any 'assault weapons' behind a single blade of grass." :barf:

Exactly...I plan on becoming a lifetime member of every group I can possibly join.

"We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in Congress, we shall fight on the homefronts, we shall fight in the capitols and cities, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the nation, we shall defend our rights, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender..."

I have seen some posts about people joining the Virginia Citizens Defense Leauge (VCDL). I REALLY recommend it. As for local organizations, it's one of the best that I have dealt with. I have been a member for over a year and mostly work gun shows for them, which is where we get the balance of our new members. They are probably better organized at the local level than the NRA. We watch the legislative reviews and then pound the House and Senate with phone calls, E-mail, and personal visits against bills that seek to limit our rights to keep and bear arms. We also hit the local town and county meetings that attempt to bring forth new legislation as well and we show up in force.

So, for those of you in VA, or elsewhere, thinking of joining the VCDL, come by a VA gunshow (as we have reps at just about all of them) or check out the website: www.vcdl.com and join from there. It's only 15 bucks a year and is ODCMP affiliated. We instituted the VA Gun Store Legal Defense Fund against Bloomie and his cohorts, and we have also instituted the Bloomberg Gun Giveaway. For every 100 dollars you spend in one of the three stores impacted by Bloomie, you get a chance to win a rifle or pistol.
Check us out!

Just a small correction. The website is, www.vcdl.org (dot "org")

And yes, join the VCDL if you live in Virginia or visit Virginia. There's also plenty of out-of-state members of VCDL, as a victory for gun owners in Virginia is a victory for all Americans and sends a message to the other states.

I did not join the NRA to get a hat, magazine or any other goodies (well, maybe the sticker for my car.) I joined so that my voice would be heard on Capitol Hill. I want Schumer, Clinton, Durbin, Kennedy, Feinstein et al. to know that the IIA is sacrosanct and we won't go away quietly.

IMNSHO, Every gun owner should belong to the NRA (who keeps tabs on the Feds) and their state organization (to keep tabs on the locals). The SAF, JPFO, GOA need our support also, but the NRA is the 800 lb Gorilla. You may not agree with everything they say and do, but just like on election day, you may not agree with everything the candidates say or do, but you still vote for the one that most closely matches your beliefs.

Oh, if you don't like what the NRA is doing, as a member you have a say in what the organization does.
"Hello NRA ??? I'm Scout26, I've been a member since 1983 and I don't like yada, yada, yada......" If enough members le them know what that we disagree with a postion they've taken they'll change it.
As opposed to "Hello, NRA ??? I'm not a member, but I disagree with you on...CLICK.......Hello ??? Hello ????"

I find the "I'm not a member of the NRA because ____fill in the blank___" to be a silly as the "The NRA should ____fill in the blank/pet cause____" Last time I checked, I'm the NRA. If I think the NRA should do something that means I should be doing it.

Kinda similiar to what goes on at my club. The guys who show up for one meeting complain the loudest about what's (not) happening, have lots of ideas of what we should be doing, but are nowhere to be seen when we have work parties or other events.

Actions speak louder then words.

To those that don't actively support RKBA organization

IMO anyone that is a gun owner and does not belong to an organized RKBA organization as a dues paying member is a freeloader. I finally realized that about myself and joined the NRA last year.
I don't always agree with things they do, but the key word here is "do", and while I am more interested in being lazy (sometimes I write letters) these people and this organization is busy "doing".
I waste so much $ anyway, at least this small contribution is well spent and I will say nothing bad about them until I am ready to personally join the fight, until then........so please, either pay to join, or be intelligent enough to be too embarrassed to expose the fact that you are a freeloader.
