Toronto Mayor Silent on grassroots efforts

Then and Now!

We are not afraid - inspired by the British grassroots effort that
sprung up after the July 2005 London bombings - is a growing move in
Canada to send a message from individual Canadians to those who would
attempt to attack democracy and freedoms.

The campaign, spearheaded by Warren Kinsella, and aided by many in
Canada's blogsphere is growing. Kinsella is doing many interviews
expressing clearly the idea behind the effort. On his blog, Kinsella writes;

"So I got an idea (which someone else has undoubtedly thought of
first). The alleged terrorists apparently wanted to target the busy
Skydome-CN Tower-Convention Centre area in downtown Toronto. That's what
terrorists want to do, naturally: scare people, and keep them from doing
what is normal.

"So here's what I suggest: we all organize a trip to see a Jays
game, and wave the flag, and wear a few T-shirts bearing a defiant
message. Remember what we saw after the London bombings? I am not afraid
ARE NOT AFRAID. Remember that? It was the right thing to do. I say:
let's all go to a ball game - and show no one's afraid.

"Anyone who wants to help, email me at [email protected]."

Simple enough idea isn't it?

The goal is a grassroots campaign not involving politicians.

That perhaps is a good thing.

Many politicians in Britain, the United States and Canada seem to have
all graduated from 'Politically Correct University". To many politicians
seem too frightened to offend lobby groups, and are frightened to
offending anyone, or anything.

Thank God such ridiculous ideas didn't exist when British Prime Minister
Churchill said;

"We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight
on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and
growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the
cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the
landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we
shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I
do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were
subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and
guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in
God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps
forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

The statement by Patrick Henry, "Give me liberty, or give me death",
uttered today, would likely be reported as being a 'radical fringe
element' by modern media.

"It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry,
Peace, Peace-- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The
next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of
resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we
here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life
so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains
and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may
take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

Today the Infozone is also featuring the strong statements of Charles
Adler (opens audio clip) who refuses to allow his nation radio show to
be hi-jacked by people wanting to declare 'open season' on Islam.

Perhaps you think I am likening Charles Adler, the "I am not afraid
campaign", and Warren Kinsella's efforts to Churchill and Henry, I am not.

We are featuring comments by bloggers on the I am not afraid campaign.

The Infozone simply wonders why the Mayor of Toronto seems so quiet on
this effort. Mayor Miller's web site does not even mention the terror
attacks, and does not mention the I am not afraid campaign.

Contrast Mayor Miller with New York Mayor Giuliani after 911. It was the
heart and soul of Giuliani's love of his city which have carved his
place in history.

Guiliani speaking at the memorial at Yankee Stadium said;

"On September 11th, New York City suffered the darkest day in our
history. It is now up to us to make this our finest hour.

"Today we come together in the Capital of the World, as a united
City. We're accompanied by religious leaders of every faith, to offer a
prayer for the families of those who have been lost…to offer a prayer
for our City… and to offer a prayer for America.

"The proud Twin Towers that once crowned our famous skyline -- no
longer stand. But our skyline will rise again.

"In the words of President George W. Bush, "we will rebuild New York
City."

"To those who say that our City will never be the same, I say you
are right. It will be better.

"Now we understand much more clearly why people from all over the
globe want to come to New York, and to America…why they always have, and
why they always will.

"It's called freedom, equal protection under law, respect for human
life, and the promise of opportunity.

"All of the victims of this tragedy were innocent.

"All of them were heroes."

Toronto was not attacked, like New York, or London, but the long-term
effect on the city and on Canada has yet to be measured.

When you look for leadership, I guess the message is never look for
politicians who graduated from "Political Correct University".

Thank goodness we have people willing to say what is so important to hear.
