Just rec'd the July issue of American Rifleman. Rossi is coming out with a factory version of a "Mare's Leg" called The Ranch Hand. I don't have a link to post but it's a shortened Model 92. 12" barrel, OAL 24" and available in .357; .44 Mag; and .45 Colt. MSRP is $536. I have absolutely no use for it but gotta have it.

Careful what you wish for.

I had no use for my second wife, had to have it and see what it got me?

If I had $500 to throw away, I'd consider it too... as a fun novelty piece... I think its on their website already?!?! I've seen it (or some version thereof) somewhere...

Imagine pullin' that THING out at the range? LOL "What the heck is that?!?!" LOL

This gun was used in an early television role of Steve McQueen (Wanted Dead or Alive). He carried .45-70 cartridges on his belt because they looked more impressive visually than the small rounds the 92 actually chambered. :D The actual cartridge used was a 4-in-1 blank. (per Rick Hacker) Per federal law, the reproduction is newly manufactured to be only a pistol.

Woody Harrelson used one in the movie "Zombieland" also. Pretty cool, but still far down on my list of guns I must have.

A friend of mine has one. He has the whole western rig and likes to show it off, but as he notes, he can't hit squat with it. For shooting purposes, it is something of a waste. For coolness, that is another matter altogether.

Okay, Rossi or not, I think that I may have to have one of those. And, a holster to sling over my back to boot. That would make a nice bicycle riding rig.

Now, they need to make a 12 gauge pistol to partner-up with it.

One of the guys we cowboy shoot with has one. They look incredibly awkward to shoot. I can really think of no functional advantage to it. Anything the Mare's Leg can do can be done more comfortably by a revolver.

But yes, incredibly cool.

You all keep saying there is no use for it. Now I have never seen Zombieland, but if someone here has I'm sure they will say it was used with devastating effect against Zombies.

So....... It does have a purpose

The Mares Leg only is around $1400. I would get it in 45Colt myself. Holster for it is $500.

Compared to this, the Rossi is a steal....

Be sure to watch the video at the bottom of the page.
Oh, and people were obviously buying them at $1300 and $1700 a copy or the guy wouldn't be in business.
The Puma Bounty Hunter was practically the same gun for just over a grand.
The Rossi is available at several places for $400.

Just got my AM R in. The Rossi is a great price. I want both. Expecially the Taurus Circuit judge. Hard part is finding one...anywhere.

IMHO, It is similar to the Mossberg Pursuader with the 16.5" barrel and pistolgrip stock.

Unless you are a cop, on duty, with a loaded 12 gauge inside your cruiser, I found that pistol grip 'non-stock' completely uncontrollable. I put on a regular synthetic stock, adjustible for length with spacers at the recoil pad, and I could shoot THAT, as soon as the shoulder stock was installed!

I have no desire to shoot a 12 gauge 3" Magnum or even 2 3/4" Magnum load from something that almost takes out my teeth.:uhoh:

Well. I pre-ordered one at my LGS in .357. Even if it shoots crooked and only half of the time, it's still twice as cool as anything else I have.

I'd rather have one in .45-70, cut all the way down to a 2 shot tube. It'd be a fun complement to my Serbu Super Shorty.

I notice that Bob Boyd made a technical error in his AR article, writing: "To arrive at this compact design, the shoulder stock is removed ..."

Obviously, he means to say that the design is modified from the original Model '92 form by deleting the rest of the buttstock from the design, but his phrasing is a bit misleading -- suggesting that they are building rifles and modifying them, which would be a violation of the NFA. These are virgin receivers, never built as rifles.

Eh, journalists... ;)

OK, OK.. read this thread earlier... got home to my AR in the mail.. yeah, it's pretty cool.

44 mag or 45 colt????? Hmmmmmm
