I have a S&W 4043(.40 cal DAO) which I have tried but can`t get the hang of DAO, A guy at the range has a Glock 23(also .40) that he does not like and wants to trade for my smith. I have never owned a glock before, is this a fair trade? thanks

Glocks are closer to being DA than SA.

The trigger pull on the Glock BOTH cocks the striker to the rear and releases it so it can be called DA.

There is no way it can be called SA.

Gun for gun, yes, it's more than fair. In fact, I believe you'll be getting the better end of the deal. If you sell the Glock you'll likely get a much better price as a percentage of what you paid (or would have paid) vs. the S&W. I'm partial to S&W 3rd gen autos, but I've got to admit that most people feel Glocks are worth more than S&Ws. Shoot the Glock and see if you like it. Some people can't stand it. Many do ok with it. A few love it.

I would jump on that trade in a heartbeat if it were me. I really don't like the Smith autos, and like the Glocks a lot.

Since you already load for or stock .40, why not try it out? You don't seem to be losing any money on the deal.

Do what's in YOUR best interest, and take with a grain of salt what
persons on this board advise (including myself). Yes, the Glock will
probably have better resale value than the S&W; but ask yourself
which you like better, your S&W or his Glock? Either way, I don't
think you can go wrong.

As an example, I just recently acquired a S&W model 6906, which
is a 3rd generation Smith. I have to admit, its my first S&W semi-
auto in over 25 years; but its a quality piece and works like a charm.
I've made it a companion piece to my West German SIG-SAUER P228,
and often times now days used it for a CCW.

see if you like the glock, the handle and feel is not liked by all.. i did quite a few adjustments to my g19 before i was fairly comfortable with it..

best of luck..

S&W autos are not the "in" thing at the moment but they tend to be good guns. I wouldn't pay MSRP on a S&W auto but they are great deals when used. Glocks hold their value much better but if you don't like the Glock, it would be a poor trade. You probably could get more money out of a used Glock than a used S&W but that doesn't mean the Glock is better. I don't think Glock are worth the money but that is just me. I have tried several other hi-cap plastic pistols and I am surprised that some fell MUCH better in te hand than a Glock. The S&W P99 and the Springfield XD both fit me much better.

As a general rule, I think it would be a good trade but try it out first because some people hate Glocks and you might be one of them.

If it would be DA you could pull the trigger and release the striker w/o any slide movement. I.E. if you would have a misfire with a DA you could drop the hammer/striker again and again w/o cocking it manually.

There are a few more DAO guns that do not have the second strike feature.

The DAO S&W autos and the little KelTec for example.

If the trigger pull does a "double action" and both cocks and fires the gun it is basically DA.

You can call it striker fired "safe action" or anything you wish to call it but the vast majority of handguns can still be described as either SA OR DA.

thank you all for your replies, next tuesday I am going to meet him at the gun range and each try out each others guns, he allready knows how the S&W will shoot as he has several in differant cals, but not .40, and I will feel out the glock and if I like it will make the trade.
