Today I traded two safe queens, a Gen4 Glock 22 and an HK USP 40 straight up today for a like new HK45 with 2 extra mags (4 total). Tomorrow will be the first time at the range;

Question: Anybody familiar with one of these have any advice on factory ammo that the gun shoots particularly well?

Be prepared to get spoiled by arguably the best polymer .45 on the market.

I don't have the HK45 but I do have the HK45C. It has not had a failure since I put the first rounds through it in 2007. It has fired PMC, S&B, WWB ( quality control issues with deformed casings in several instances), Federal Champion, Speer Gold Dot, Rem. Golden Saber, Blazer Brass, and Fiochhi. No problems whatsoever with many rounds. I believe the HK45 will have the same results. Folks on HKPro.com seem to really like the HK45. Hornady and the steel cased Russian stuff aren't particularly popular, iirc.

I had the HK45, now I have the HK45C. Never found a factory load that didn't shoot well, although I shoot mostly handloads.
Blazer brass would be a good start, then a reloading press. My .45 caliber HKs have been fantastic with handloads.

Mine eats any ammo I feed it and is a great shooter. Enjoy man.

This afternoon I ran 100 rounds each of Tula steel case and Federal aluminum case ammo through the HK45. This handles recoil of the Fed ammo noticeably better than my G-21, which really isn't bad anyway. Very happy with the way it hits the targets with the cheap ammo.

Plastic Safe Queen???????????????????????

Congrats on your trade thou...

I dearly love the good ol' USP but mine is kind of a safe queen, too (or would be if I had a proper safe). It's on the large side for CCW; doable but I have a P30S, USPc and P30L that are slightly more concealable that fill the same role. The one time I generally do carry a USP is while camping. I dunno why but the big old built-like-a-brick-gunstore USP is very comforting to have when I'm out in the sticks. I really like that the USP can fire the hottest of +P+ loads All Day Long, day in and day out. My particular USP has also been outfitted with a Match Trigger. While handguns are not ideal for gunfighting I can't imagine a much better gunfighting handgun than a USP.

If I won the lottery I'd absolutely buy an HK45! But I probably won't buy one anytime soon, and for the same reason I eventually sold my beloved USP45 Tactical. I have reached the point where any gun I own has to have some utility for CCW. If I can't carry it then I need an extraordinary reason to keep it. I probably will get another USP45 Tactical again down the road (at the time I used the cash to fund a near once-in-a-lifetime deal on an HK that has become my primary EDC CCW) just because I love the gun so. I probably like the USP45 a bit more than the newer HK45. It just fits my hand so well, and holds two more rounds.

Still, I could probably talk myself into an HK45! But I'd rather have an HK45C...a little better for CCW.
