Trading hunting tags

Before i go forth into the world and do something silly. I figured id ask here.

Since i dont have the money it requires to get in on a lease anywhere near Austin, tx.

I was considering offering to trade my buck tags to someone for a doe and some pigs.

Really just looking to fill the freezer with two does and two pigs this year.

What do you guys think would that be a fair trade for someone who likes to trophy hunt etc? Id even throw in some deer corn etc that kind of stuff. I know there are plenty of people who really just want to hunt a rack.

Thoughts and or considerations appreciated.

From a former GW, I do not know what Texas laws are (I would suggest asking them); but in VA it was illegal to re-sell/trade/give your tags to another.

Best bet, look in classifieds (saw some in Statesman) or ask friends.

Here is the applicable statute from the Texas Parks and Wildlife code.

Sec. 42.018. TAG TO BE ATTACHED TO DEER. (a) Except as provided by Subsection (d) or commission rule, no person may possess the carcass of a deer before the carcass has been finally processed at a final destination unless there is attached to the carcass a properly executed deer tag from a hunting license provided by the department and issued to the person who killed the deer.


I’m a Justice of the Peace and this type of violation has been filed in my court before. I fine the offenders $500.00 per violation.

seal, what the JP is saying is that the tags go with the license, and ONLY with that one license.

Even if you're sitting side-by-side with another hunter and he shoots a buck, it's illegal to put your tag on it. If you shoot a doe, it's illegal to put his tag on it.

So if I'm reading that right I would have to have shot the deer to put my tag on it. Thereby anyone i give my tag to that uses it on a deer could face a penalty. Thanks!
That's why i figured i should check with some folks here, a wealth of knowledge. I searched for giving tags and didn't get anything.
