Friends Of Murdered Officer Say He Was Born For The Job

Joseph McGarry, a 28-year-old South Carolina police officer killed in the line of duty, never tired of telling friends in Rhode Island how much he loved his job.

"Every time he came back, he couldn't stop talking about his job," said Warwick police officer Matthew Barlow, 28, who knew him for five years. "He had such a passion for life and for his job. He was having such a good time."

The Warwick native was killed during a traffic stop early Sunday in Myrtle Beach, according to investigators. He was hit in the head with a bullet fired from .45-caliber pistol. McGarry died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Two people were arrested in the case. Allen Cottrell, 25, exchanged gunfire with police before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

Cottrell, who was shot in the leg, was charged with murder following a high speed chase with police.

McGarry had proposed to his girlfriend, Holly Newman, on Christmas Eve. She accepted.

Friends say he loved his job with the street crimes unit. He hoped to one day be a police chief, like his uncle, Smithfield Police Chief William McGarry.

Joseph McGarry joined the Myrtle Beach police force four years ago after trying unsuccessfully to get on Rhode Island police departments "He was strong physically, emotionally, and spiritually,"

Warwick police officer David Kelly, 27, McGarry's friend since kindergarten, told The Providence Journal. "He was a big kid and I think the only reason the good Lord gave him the size that he did was so he could be large enough for his heart."

Myrtle Beach police Lt. Chuck Dunn said McGarry helped set up a community policing program.

"His concern was greater for his fellow officers and the people he touched on the road than it was for himself," Dunn said.

There seems to be a lot of this lately! About a year ago, on another board and under a different name, I suggested that this might happen. People are getting fed up with government in general and the police are the most obvious arm of government.

I have an idea that it may get worse before it gets better too. This may very well turn out to be somewhat like the plot in "Unintended Consequences" except there is no central directing party. Everyone is freelancing, popping whichever cop happens to stop them for that broken tail-light. Not a good thing nor a good time to be a cop.

I did a search on this Cottrell guy who shot the cop. It looks like he had a prior record.

It's just too dang bad we don't have a some kind of gun control law in effect that could check a persons background info to see if they have any criminal record. That would have surely kept a gun out of this guys hand.

:(

Felon gets caught with a gun = bad for felon.

Felon tries to avoid getting caught by shooting at cop = very bad for felon.

As above but felon hits cop = extremely bad for felon.

As above but felon kills cop = terminal for felon.

Can't they figure that out...? :(
